Fieldheadquarters of Heinrich Himmler 'Hochwald'.
In the village of Grossgarten (in Polish Pozezdrze) across the Mauersee some 22 k.m. east of the Wolfschanze the 'Feldkommandostelle' of SS- and Gestapo chef Heinrich Himmler can be found east of the Angerburg - Lotzen (in Polish Gizycko) road. It was constructed in a thick forest again in 1940/1941 and consisted of a number of large air-shelter bunkers and several other buildings protected by mine-fields and barbed wire fences. The large bunkers were all constructed in the 'B' construction class, thus the walls and ceilings had a thickness of 2 m. Just as in the Wolfschanze in 1944 Himmler's bunker was covered by an extra concrete ceiling and walls. August 20, 1944 the complex was abandoned. January 14, 1945 the bunkers were demolished by 'Pioniere'.

Current state:
Although blown the best preserved bunker is Himmler's. You can still glance at the large outer walls and enter through the narrow entrance, go right into the bunker itself and stare at the large amount of rubble...
Parking 1 km. north of town on the Angerburg road, the area is on the east.
