What you see in the background is the "sandy hook" section of New Jersey. In a geographic sense, New Jersey surrounds New York City on the on our west and on our south. You can't see Breezy Point in this picture but it is to the extreme left and all ships entering New York Harbor have to enter between Breezy Point and Sandy Hook.
