Poggendorf's Illusions | Rabbit-Duck | Saxophone-Face |
Shadow | Focus | Square with Lines |
This illusion on the left consists of a straight line which disappears behind a solid rectangle and then reappears on the other side. Notice how the diagonal does not line up? The truth is that it really is perfectly straight as the picture on the right will show. I used the Windows paint program to make those illusions ... it was fun. The figure below can be imagined as either a duck facing left or a rabbit facing right, take a good look. Once you have realized both aspects, you may 'flip' back and forth between them pretty quickly, but psychologists say that we can never see both exactly at the same time. You can try it, but I'm posting an immediate disclaimer ... "Let it be known that Buddy is not responsible for your headaches, loss of balance, stiff neck, back pains, or any other malfunctions you may have." We know that a duck is a small, short-necked, and large-billed waterfowl. If I may speak scientifically, (ahem), it would belong to the "uck" family of animals ... And we know that rabbits have long ears with usually gray or brown fur. They're also quite reproductive, so I once heard in some very unscientific expression ... The female is capable of having two to eight young each year, G-d bless them. So now take a good look, look for a long beak, a short neck, two long ears, and some gray fur ... I guess what THAT animal is called would be a "dubbit" ... well, so I made up a new word. Now you see a saxophone ... now you see a face. This is an example of what is called a "subjective object" ... which can be almost anything. This is a subjective object which is also a word, and itself may be invisible, but a dark cast shadow helps define its edges. Seeing only part of the letters can help us visualize the entire shape. There are no lines, only shadows. Look at this carefully ... there's no square ... there are only lines.
