[OGRe Database] [Intradigm Plasmid Database] [Intradigm Networking] [Bin's Web] [Hungry Waters Golf Club's Database] [Comparison of Database] [Protein/DNA Converter] [Monthly Payment Calculator] [Binary Tree and Their Uses] [Linux on a Laptop] [Network Design Proposal]

OGRe Database: OGRe is a searchable relational database which was initially designed by Daniel Jameson in Manchester University. I took it over for continuing development and maintenance in the beginning of 2003. OGRe currently contains the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of 360 metazoan organisms. In order to meet the increasing demand for direct user access, the newest version of OGRe Database is now hosted and maintained at McMaster University.

Intradigm Plasmid Database: The objective of this project is to build a standardized web interface Plasmid database (PlasmidDB), which is user friendly as well as easy to maintain, as part of Intradigm Corporation in-house databases. This plasmid DNA database allows Intradigm to keep record of all plasmid DNA being constructed and used within company. In particular, the database contains the entire sequence of individual plasmid DNA in a clone manager file, a detailed description of the functional elements of all plasmids, such as cloned gene, promoter, transcriptional and translational control element, and a brief description of the construction of the plasmid, its application areas, the required host strains, selection markers and other instructive details. User can search the whole database for any specific information. PlasmidDB was build with Perl/PHP/MySQL/HTML web languages and is available at Intradigm Co. However, it is only for internal use due to security reason at this moment.

Intradigm Networking: The objective of this project is to design a flexible Local Area Network (LAN) that can be upgraded as needed in the future for Intradigm Corporation comprised of at least 100 PCs and other peripherals, using Linux and TCP/IP. The establishment of LAN provides both convenience and security for intra-company communication through Internet. Additionally, the existence of firewall can protect Intradigm Corporation data only being accessed by authorized users. This project services Intradigm Corporation employees with the basic of the Internet (email, surf the Web, print, database, files and backup etc), and makes them more comfortable with computers for biotechnology professional. Intradigm Corporation network is being used as intra-information transfer system now, to exchange and share managing and research information with high security.

Bin’s Web Page: This web page was designed and developed with FrontPage 2000 initially to demonstrate my knowledge of web design and development. It is easy to be navigated with multiple level internal links, published and maintained with my naked hands now. It is also a searchable web page with a built in search engine. Several web languages, HTML, Java Applet and Java Script etc, were used in the web page. Graphics, click able links and buttons were also included in this web page. You can click HERE to have a trip. For best views, please be sure use IE4.0 or later to view it.

Hungry Waters Golf Club’s Database: This database was developed with MS Access 2000 as my final project upon the requirement of Database management. Generally speaking, the database was designed to deal with different business missions of the club as much as possible. The database is able to handle the tee time reservations, score tracking and handicaps, chemical application, employee and member’s information, etc. The database is flexible to add new features in the future.

Comparison of Database: The purpose of this paper is to compare three database software products: Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and Oracle 8i. This comparison is intended to provide insight into the various strengths & weaknesses in each of these database software packages and how they would be used in the compilation and presentation of research data. In comparing these three database products, it became apparent they each hold a different place and purpose in the market, e.g. bioinformatics field. Access is designed to be desktop database software for single users or small workgroups, based on a client-file database. Microsoft SQL Server is still most appropriate for a departmental or small to mid-size company whose database doesn’t have such high scalability, reliability and availability needs. Oracle8i operates on the high end of the database market and is good for database server around the Internet. You can click HERE to read the whole paper.

Protein/DNA Converter: This java applet was programmed as the final project of Java programming. The applet can calculate the exact molecular weight of the protein as Dalton when the user enter the number of amino acids of a protein as well as it can calculate the exact number of amino acids of a protein when the user enter the molecular weight of a protein as Dalton. The formulas used in this applet is 1kb of DNA = 333 amino acids of coding capacity = 3.7 x 104 Dalton protein. You can click HERE to run it now to take a look how it works online.

Monthly Payment Calculator: This is one of my final projects of Visual Basic. The project interface contains a text box, a list box, a command button, option buttons, label controls, and a menu. You can use this application to calculate the monthly payment for a car loan. For example, what would your monthly payment be if you wanted to borrow $30,000 at 8% interest for five years? Notice that the application’s menu bar has two menus: File and Color. The user can set up the own application interface and print it easily with two menus.

Binary Tree and Their Uses: This is one of my assignments in the course of data structure. In this assignment, a special binary tree was created with C++ language. A binary tree (with no duplicate node values) has the characteristic that the values in any left sub tree are less than the value in its parent node, and the values in any right sub tree are greater than the value in its parent node. This program can add Name & Phone Number, Delete Name & Phone Number, Edit tree, Display tree, Save the tree to disk, Load a tree from a disk, Clear the tree and Quit after run it.

Linux on a laptop: I made a move to the Linux operating system in the summer of 2000. I installed and configured RedHat 6.1 Linux on my Toshiba Satellite 2595XDVD. After installation, I set up new LILO file to boot both Windows98 and Linux, configured internal modem to connect Internet, configured the kernel to make a zip disk driver, configured sound system to listen music, and other configurations. I also do java programming on Linux. You can click HERE to take a look what have been done.

Network Design Proposal: This network design proposal was created as my final project upon the request of “Management of Networks and Telecommunications?. The network proposal was designed for local network of Guangdong Medical College (GDMC), where I worked in before I came to USA. The network was designed to serve Guangdong Medical College staffs, students with the basics features of the Internet (email, surf the Web, print, data, files, remote control and backup etc), and make them more comfortable with computers and Internet for medical professional. While designing the proposal, I considered about what topology should be used for the network? What equipment do I need for the network? How to place and connect these equipment, the wire and drops to make the network works? And how much cost for the whole network? In the proposal, I gave detailed descriptions and explanations about the basic design of GDMC Local Area Network along with the budget of the whole LAN. You can click HERE to read the whole proposal.
