Songwriting

Backstreet Boys' forthcoming album, Black & Blue, aims to re-establish the lads as the world's most respected boy band, as seven of the 15 tracks are written or co-written by the band members. The five have written two tracks on the album without any outside help - The Answer To Our Life, a better-than-average uptempo track similar to their previous hit The One, and Time, a love song that is weighed down by heavy production by Babyface.

Howie Dorough has stepped forward as the band's main songwriter, co-writing three further album tracks - the ballads What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) and How Did I Fall In Love With You, plus the Rodney Jerkins stunner Shining Star, on which Nick Carter also helps out.

AJ McLean's bad boy reputation is brought into question on the track he co-wrote, Yes I Will, a schmaltzy ballad on which he declares to a girl that he wants to start a family.

Kevin Richardson helps out on It's True, the preview track released on promotional CDs to American Burger King restaurants earlier this year.

Brian Littrell was obviously two busy getting married to contribute further to the album, though as he's one of the group's lead singers, we'll let him off. Instead, he found time to comment on the group's concerted effort for a more diverse sound on Black & Blue. 'On Millennium we had a few songs that sounded the same - fast songs that would sound similar to fast songs, as well as ballads that would sound similar to other ballads,' he said. 'On this album it's a little more diverse song for song on every track, you'll find out.' Black & Blue is released on 20th November. The album's first single, Shape Of My Heart, is released on 6 November.

Live Cybercast

Backstreet Boys are planning a live cybercast on the Net to allow fans to watch them perform songs from their new album Black & Blue on 20 November, the day of the CD's release. It's reported in the States that the group have signed a deal with top US retailer Wal Mart to give a live performance of songs from the album to will be webcast to more than 2,000 Wal Mart stores across the US.

BSB fans around the world won't miss out ... the performance will be streamed on Wal Mart's website, www.wal-mart.com, for one week following the album's release. It's understood the group will perform four songs, two from the album and two previous releases. The location of the performance is being kept secret.

The move is

the latest marketing ploy by the group in a bid to outdo the 2.4 million first week sales in the US of Jive Records stablemates and rivals 'N Sync with their No Strings Attached album released in March. Last month it was revealed that a 'street team' of fans, known as the BSB-OOST (Backstreet Boys Official Online Street Team), are currently hard at work promoting the album. It's estimated there are 20,000 members of the street team in the US using chat rooms and newsgroups on the Internet to promote Black & Blue as well as voting on radio request lines for the group's new single Shape Of My Heart. Along with Shape Of My Heart, the fourth Backstreet Boy album will feature The Call, Get Another Boyfriend, Shining Star, I Promise You (With Everything I Am), The Answer To Our Life, More Than That, Time, Not For Me, Yes I Will, It's True and How Did I Fall In Love With You.

Launch.com reports that the cover will not portray the boys' faces and group member Brian Littrell confirms, 'The cover is just going to be half black and half blue with the words Black & Blue on it. We decided not to go with the picture on the cover just to differentiate ourselves once again from the normal picture on the front.' Last weekend, worldpop announced that Backstreet Boys will launch their world tour in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 23 January.

Backstreet brings family on tour!

'Backstreet's back alright' - bigger than ever. Their new album 'Black And Blue' will be in stores around the world on the 21st of November.

But not enough with this success - in the meantime their first comic has been released. More than 80.000 fans celebrated the premiere of the first Backstreet Boys comic-strip. Even Harry Potter's new book did not have that many fans. The new world tour is planned for next year. This time the whole Backstreet family is going to be on tour. The five superstars will travel with all their family and friends. "It depends to everyone himself, how much he will show to public. But I think we can handle with this problem," said Howie in our interview to the question, if he or one of the others are frightened of paparazies. But not everything that shines is gold. There are still some open dreams. The Backstreet Boys wanted to sing with Lionel Richie, after Kevin and Howie have been on stage with him in Bremen, Germany. But both record labels said 'no' to the project.

Probably there will be a duet between the Backstreet Boys and Lionel Richie, during Lionel Richie's world tour. The Backstreet Boys will be on stage with Madonna at the 'Wetten dass...?' show on the 11th of November.

The World Tour

Although the Backstreet Boys will deliver their Black & Blue in time for holidays, the group won't hit the road in support of it until January, when the quintet will kick off a world tour. Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean said on Friday (Oct. 27) that the group will launch its world tour January 23 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The date will mark the start of an eight-week North American run. The group will then take a two-week break before hitting Asia and Australia. The Backstreet Boys also plan to play Europe and South America before returning to the States for another six-week run. McLean said the entire tour is likely to run through November or December. "It's finally going to be a true world tour," McLean said. "We've been saying we were going to do a world tour for the last two years, but we end up hitting the U.S., Canada and Europe, and that's about it as far as we go. This time we're taking this tour the whole way around the world." Black & Blue is scheduled to hit stores November 21. The group has already given fans a taste of the album with the ballad "Shape of My Heart," and McLean promises that more up-tempo material awaits on the new LP.

James Cameron (Director for Titanic) has Kevin for a lead role in mind for his next movie "Sleeping Beauty: The Movie)

With four number one singles and a Grammy, pop songb

ird Christina Aguilera could not ask for more... Well, that was until she received the script for, "Sleeping Beauty: The Movie". Yes, you heard right -- "Sleeping Beauty: The Movie", set to be directed by James Cameron, (Titanic 1997, The Abyss 1986), Mr. Cameron thought, "That so called, 'vogue' part in Ms. Aguilera's song, "What A Girl Wants" caught my eye immediately", and quote, "She would be perfect for the lead role as the Sleeping Beauty -- she also possesses that cute fairy tale voice", he said.

Now guess who would play the prince? Yes, you definitely got it, Kevin Richardson from the Backstreet Boys, and this is what the Oscar winning director had to say about him, "Well, he definitely has those Prince Charming looks, the goatee definitely shows it." Although the scripts have not been even mailed yet, James Cameron has his eyes set on Aguilera and Richardson.

Details about the tracks off "Black & Blue"

1. The Call (3:24)
Written by: Max Martin/Rami
Produced by: Max Martin/Rami

As any fool knows, pop songs based around telephones

- from Take That's 'Babe' to Blondie's 'Call Me' are
all brilliant, and the Backstreet Boys were hardly likely to choose a duff number to open the most important album of their career. From the Latiny intro to a stomping, almost military drumbeat - and distorted phone-call over the top - it's evident from the word go that 'The Call' is an album-opener every bit as 'Larger Than Life'. There's much singing about "The call that changed my destiny" and what turns out to be a quite breathtaking chorus: "I will be late, don't stay up and wait for me/My battery's low, just so you know/We're going to a place nearby - gotta go". Yet another phone-call occurs in the middle-eight, there are synthesised stabs reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys, and the whole thing ends when the caller hangs up.

2. Shape Of My Heart (3:50)
Written by: Max Martin/Rami/Lisa Miskovsky
Produced by: Max Martin/Rami
The single - you'll know this one by now. It follows the same kind of pattern as 'I Want It That Way' (spookily a track-2-after-a-big-old-upbeat-number itself on 'Millennium'): long intro, mid-tempo, bloody ace. Obviously, there's the classic Max Martin key change toward the end, with wailing, overlapping choruses and much a-croonin'.

3. Get Another Boyfriend (3:06)
Written by: Max Martin/Rami
Produced by: Max Martin/Rami There's quite a dark theme to this one, and the muttering of "Backstreet" in the introduction - sounding for all the world like a Rodney Jerkins-style "Darkchild" - is ominous and scary. Still, upbeat and raucous, 'Get Another Boyfriend' has a killer chorus ("Listen I mean it, there's nothing that he's worthy of/He's just another playa playing in the game of love/This must come to an end... Get another boyfriend"), a scream of "Heyaaahh!", and pulls all the strings you could possibly want pulled.

4. Shining Star (3:22)
Written by: Franciz & LePont/Nick/Howie
Produced by: Rodney Jerkins
This one's the Darkchild production, fairly upbeat but with an R&B edge running through the whole song. Which, apart from an empty refrigerator, is what you expect when you get Rodney in to twiddle your knobs. Also throws up some preposterous lyrics: "You're my shining star that is what you are/There is no-one like you, baby/Angels everywhere, every time you're near". There's the obligatory "Darkchild Backstreet Boys c'mon" bit towards the end, some neat electro-squiggles and an abrupt end.

5. I Promise You (4:22)
Written by: Dan Hill
Produced by: Timmy Allen
"It seems like everyone we know's breaking up/Doesn't anyone stay in love any more?" Oh, it could so easily be about boy-bands. Except, of course, it's not a metaphor at all - it's just about love. The first full-blown ballad on 'Black & Blue' gives us some more heartfelt lyrics. Such as: "I promise you from the bottom of my heart/I will love you 'til death do us part/I promise you as a lover and a friend..." Guitars twinkle and maracas shake, there's a big, flourishing drum roll for the last chorus, and those classic words rear their heads: "What I'm trying to say to you I never said to anyone..." Don't worry, it's not "I've been bonking your dad".

6. The Answer To Our Life (3:17)
Written by: Backstreet Boys
Produced by: Per Magnusson/David Kreuger
Begins with the simple plinking of a piano, but what jumps out immediately from 'The Answer To Our Life' is the synth line, wonderfully evocative of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean'. It's the warmest song so far on 'Black & Blue', and follows a tempo along the lines of 'The One' on 'Millennium'. "Show me a reason, give me a sign/Tell me when we fall out of line", we're asked. "Is it today or is it tonight/We'll find the answer to our life?" Well, sometimes that answer never comes. But it's always sensible to ask.

7. Everyone (3:29)
Written by: Kristian Lundin/Andreas Carlsson
Produced by: Kristian Lundin/Andreas Carlsson
Again, there are some military-style drums - and 'Everyone' is a dramatic rallying cry for Backstreet fans around the world. From the opening "Let's get on with the show/Let's get it started/Turn the lights down low..." through to the massive chorus of "This one goes out to... Everyone, everyone/We're standing strong 'cos of what you've done/This one goes out to you". Then there's a brilliant bit where they talk about living "in a circus", and a cool circus-organ sound effect twiddles in out of nowhere. Destined to be performed at the start of concerts. Or the end. Or somewhere in the middle.

8. More Than That (3:44)
Written by: Franciz & LePont/Adam Anders
Produced by: Franciz & LePont
Shuffling beats which could, at a stretch, be described as Timbaland-esque (but it's a ballad at heart) and a definite Latin feel. 'More Than That' also has an epic string section and the lines, "I could love you more than that/I won't say the words then take them back/Don't give loneliness a chance, baby, listen to what I say/I will love you... More than that".

9. Time (3:54)
Written by: Backstreet Boys
Produced by: Babyface
You can spot Babyface's production a mile off. Obviously, as a result, 'Time' sounds like it was recorded in the '80s - lots of smoochy 'Miami Vice'-type effects abound - as does the observation, "I know we've changed, but a change can be so good". There really is an awful lot of "ooh yeah" stuff going on, as well as the profound comment, "Time goes on and on every day". Very true. As you might expect from an epic BSB song, there's an enormous key change and much wailing towards the end, as well as the assurance that "Time is what it is, come what may". Backstreet Boys wrote this one themselves.

10. Not For Me (3:15)
Written by: Kristian Lundin/Jake/Andreas Carlsson
Produced by: Kristian Lundin/Jake
In which the Boys use the gift of the extended metaphor in a first verse that describes the "scene of the crime". The "crime", it seems, is the Boys' girl CHEATING!!! "I got a feelin' you weren't true to me", it is sung. You see, there's no pulling wool over the eyes of the Backstreet Boys. Indeed, as they say themselves, "I've got eyes to see that you're not the one for me... Now I know what it's coming to". There's a synthy backing and a middle-eight which sounds a bit like the breakdown in Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'. "Justify my reasons to stay!" demand the boys amid breathy "no no, uh uh"s.

11. Yes I Will (3:50)
Written by: AJ/Brian Kierulf/Josh Schwartz
Produced by: Timmy Allen/Larry 'Rock' Campbell
And so we come to the most hilarious lyrics by any pop band ever. The whole song's about wanting to hear your partner say 'Yes I will'. "I'm down on my knees/I'm asking you/Three words", the Boys plead. They just want you to say, "Yes I will... I'll give you everything you need/And sometime start a family... with you". Start a family?!?! There's much guitar plucking and plinking, as well as a massive dramatic swoosh into the final chorus.
12. It's True (4:13)
Written by: Max Martin/Andreas Carlsson/Kevin
Produced by: Per Magnusson/David Kreuger
Oddly begins like East 17's 'Around The World' - 'It's True' is another ballad but it's a bit of a corker. It's also very earnest: "It's true, I mean it/From the bottom of my heart/Yeah, it's true/Without you I would fall apart". Well, there's nothing like laying your cards on the table. By the time the second verse swings around, some drums have kicked in, amid underwater-sounding effects, and the best bit comes towards the end: the line, "It's true..." is left hanging in space before a drum clatter (that puts Phil Collins to shame) slams in, and the chorus peels off into the sky.

13. What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) (3:33)
Written by: Howie/Steve Diamond/Andreas Carlsson
Produced by: Timmy Allen
Possibly the most subtly offensive sentiment since Ronan Keating said, "We're all better off when you keep your mouth shut, love", 'What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful)' also has the best use of brackets in recent months. "Material things don't matter to me/Come as you are, you've got nothing to prove!" we're told. This ballad is, presumably, for the Boys' really minging fans. "In your eyes I see all the love I'll ever need". To which NMEPOP.COM has only one response: U.G.L.Y! You ain't got no alibi! You're ugly!

14. How Did I Fall In Love With You (4:04)
Written by: Howie/Calum MacColl/Andrew Fromm
Produced by: Timmy Allen
This one - it's another ballad and it doesn't even have ANY DRUMS AT ALL!!! - is about deciding that you fancy your best friends, and is basically 'Dawson's Creek' squeezed into just over four minutes. It's kinda like "best of friends, like sister and brother" and the way everything changes and the fact that they "never meant to feel this way - don't want to be alone tonight". "With you I want to spend the rest of my life", it seems. "Everything's changed..." Blimey!

15. All I Have To Give (A Capella) (3:48)
Written by: Full Force
Produced by: David Thomas/Mar Kibble
How's this for a bizarre end to an album: a two-year-old single (which, let us be honest, in the light of what's come since, really isn't that good) done a capella style - for no reason whatsoever! And here's the interesting bit: it's a very special type of a capella BECAUSE THERE ARE INSTRUMENTS IN IT!

5 million pre-orders already!

Pre-orders from U.S. music retailers for the Backstreet Boys upcoming album Black & Blue (due November 21) are near an astounding 5 million copies already, report sources at Jive Records.

The Backstreet Boys are looking to topple the record set by Jive labelmates 'N Sync, who sold more than 2.4 million copies of their latest album No Strings Attached in its first week, according toSoundscan.

Backstreet Boys hope to shatter not only the domestic record for first-week album sales, but also numerous worldwide first-week sales records as well. Such aspirations might explain why the Backstreet Boys have planned a two-day promotional tour visiting six continents right before the release of Black & Blue. The whirlwind promo jaunt will culminate with the group's arrival in New York City.

The official track list for Black & Blue includes: "The Call," "Shape Of My Heart," "Get Another Boyfriend," "Shining Star," " I Promise You (With Everything I Am)," "The Answer To Our Life," "Everyone," "More Than That," " Time," "Not For Me," "Yes I Will," "It's True," and "How Did I Fall In Love With You." Calls to official sources at both Jive Records and MSO were not returned by press time.

How did I ever fall in love with you

One of the tracks on the Backstreet Boys new Jive album Black & Blue (due November 21) is titled "How Did I Fall In Love (With You)?," LAUNCH has learned. The ballad was co-written by group member Howie Dorough and New Jersey-based songwriter Andrew Fromm when the duo met up for writing sessions in London earlier this year. Fromm penned two tracks -- "Spanish Eyes" and "I Need You Tonight" -- on the Backstreet Boys' multiplatinum Millennium album, and he is currently writing songs for LFO's upcoming album. "How Did I Fall In Love (With You)?" is reportedly going to be the very last track on Black & Blue. Fromm has contributed songs to albums by Nobody's Angel, Josh Keaton, and Don Philip, among others. Fromm also provided background vocals for Britney Spears debut album and Joey McIntyre's solo debut. In addition to the Backstreet Boys, Fromm co-wrote 'N Sync's "I Don't Want To Spend One More Christmas Without You," which will appear on Jive's upcoming Platinum Christmas album, due out November 14. The prolific songwriter also penned the track "Puzzle Of My Heart," which was recently recorded by the Irish boy band Westlife for a new album due out in Europe this November.

World Tour in 1 day

BACKSTREET BOYS have announced their intention to undertake a world tour in a single day. The multi-platinum US boy band are to make appearances in all six continents on November 21, to celebrate the release of their forthcoming ‘Black And Blue’ album.

The Boys’ Howie Dorough announced the band’s plans to a US radio station. “It just so happens that Japan is a day ahead because of the time difference so we can cover all six continents on 21 November,” the singer claimed. “We have a huge fan base in America and we are very fortunate to have lots of fans around the world as well so we wanted to do this six continent thing for them.”

Backstreet Boys are not the first band to engage in one day continent hopping. Def Leppard and Geri Halliwell have both undertaken similar jet lag-defying promotional trips in the past. The new Backstreet Boys’ single ‘Shape Of My Heart’ is released on November 6. The release of ‘Black And Blue’ follows on November 21.

What BSB's been up to recently

Seen all around Los Angeles, the boys have wrapped a brand new video for their single “Shape Of My Heart” (shot over two days in an old theatre in downtown Los Angeles by director Matthew Rolston) and have found some time for little R&R as well. After the video shoot AJ headed to his favorite vacation spot Las Vegas, only to return to LA by the end of the week. Nick got his fishing gear together and went to San Diego to do some fishing. Kevin was seen dining with wife Kristin and some friends at LA’s “celebrity friendly” restaurant “The Little Door” (so private that you have to know where it is to find it, no sign, no windows, just one little unmarked door...hence the name...) Brian and Leighanne were seen with their little dogs in Beverly Hills in front of their swanky but secluded hotel (with Brian’s bodyguard Raul in tow). Howie had time to go check out Bjork’s film debut “Dancer In The Park” at the Hollywood premiere (wearing the same shirt he will be wearing in the new vi! deo!). Howie is the one Boy sporting a brand new look for the video with almost no facial hair and hair loose and straight...looking HOT! Meanwhile...AJ seems to have discovered nail polish...Later in the week some meetings were held with Fatima, the Boys choreographer to plan the next tour...MTV filmed the video shoot for their “Making the Video” series and that’ll premiere in the US later this month.

Backstreet Boys won 'Outstanding Contribution to Pop' in the TV Hits Awards held in London. Backstreet Boys won over Max Martin, Peter Waterman, and Phil Spector.

Source: Big Hit Magazine (Feb 2000 - Australia)

He loves playing pranks on the road and always seems to get away with it! During the recent Into The Millennium Tour, he stocked up on firecrackers to put under toilet seats and surprise the other boys! His favorite trick on the last tour was to fill a sock with all the smelly things he could fin, then leave it behind the drum kit to fester.
Nick can be a bit grumpy in the mornings and when he’s in a really bad mood he’s been known to slap the boys around the head!
According to AJ, Nicks hotel room gets pretty messy when the boys are on the road. "On the last tour, his room looked like it’d been hit by a tornado" he says. " clothes everywhere, video games, his console, food, candy bars, everything. It would be called the ‘comfortable, lived in look’ but only if you could actually find his bed!"
One of Nicks most embarrassing moments on stage was when he tried to do a kip up – when they lie on their backs and flip up onto their legs. He didn’t make it and fell flat on his back!
When Nick wants some time to himself, he’ll put on his headphones and listen to anything from Nirvana to Prince! Sometimes he’ll just sit on his bunk in the tour bus and draw.
If there’s time, he’ll stop and chat to fans. " I meet a lot of girls when we’re traveling and I try to make friends with some," he says. "Then when we go back to that country I can call them up for a chat!"
Nick prefers traveling from venue to venue by bus rather than plane. He still hates flying, despite having flown all around the world a million times!
Instead of partying after a show, Nick likes to go back to the hotel, have a nice long shower and go to bed. " It doesn’t take me long to wind down after doing a show," he says. " I get so tired I could fall asleep right away!"
If Nicks mum isnt on tour with them, he’ll call home twice a day ‘cause he gets pretty homesick. " where up at the crack of dawn some days, we travel all day and then perform at night. That’s the schedule, day after day," he sighs. "but the bad parts even out because we get such a buzz from performing and we meet some great people."

BSB on Napstar
Source: A newsletter

Don't bother looking for "Shape of Hy Heart" on Naptser (at least right now that is), you'll be wasting your time, I've downloaded every song at different lengths, even the one that says "this is not bogus" IS bogus, it's 2 girls singing quit playin games with my farts (real mature) All of the other songs are some song by some guy that starts off singing "you broke my heart... blah blah blah..."the only ones that aren't fake are the ones that are 2:11 and shorter, and the ones that are suposedly 2:11 mins long, aren't. All it is is basically the clips that I've already put up here, and about 1 min or so of silence (how dissapointing!) Feeling desperate I even looked on Scour Exchange and it wasn't there either.... But chances are after 9pm tonight there will be real copies (if you're into the whole napster thing)

Video for "Shape of My Heart" next week..

With the title and release date of the next Backstreet Boys offering confirmed, a flurry of tidbits about the album are beginning to trickle out, including plans for its first video. Speaking with MTV News this week in Los Angeles at the record release party for Madonna's latest, "Music," Backstreet's Kevin Richardson said that the group will meet up with director Matthew Rolston next week to shoot a video for the first single from the Boys' upcoming "Black And Blue" album. As we previously reported, that single will be "Shape Of My Heart," which hits radio stations across the country on October 3.

Richardson also dished (albeit vaguely) on the sound of the new album, telling MTV News, "We feel it's a growth. We feel it's a fresh sound. We're proud of it. We're excited." Kevin also mentioned that after prepping the video for the Backstreet Boys' single "The One," he's ready to return to the director's chair. "I have lots of ambitions to direct," Richardson said. "We actually have our own [record] label now, and we have an artist, and I'm possibly going to direct her video." The artist in question is Krystal, a singer from Indiana who is the first signing to the Backstreet Boys' still-unnamed record label. Krystal's debut album should surface early next year, and she is expected to join the Boys when they launch their tour in support of "Black And Blue" in 2001. As for the Boys, their "Black And Blue" album hits stores on November 21.

ALSO ANOTHER NOTE ON KEVIN AT THE RELEASE PARTY: On Madonna's new album: "I love it. It's funky," Richardson said. "It makes me shake my booty." He said he admired Madonna's chameleon-like persona and fearlessness. "She's not afraid to take chances, to make changes," he said. "She's affected by what's going on in the world around her." Here's the pic that came with this article: http://www.geocities.com/brok4evr2000/Sept2000/kevin2.jpg

About the New Album

Got Nov. 21 reserved for Thanksgiving preparations? If you have a teenage girl, you may have to take time out to drive her to the mall to buy the Backstreet Boys' new album.

What may be at stake is the all-time first-week sales crown held by rival boys 'N Sync, who shattered the Backstreets' old record of 1.2 million last spring with an astounding 2.4 million copies sold of "No Strings Attached." "I think 'N Sync's record will probably stand for the foreseeable future, although if anything right now had a chance to beat it, Backstreet Boys could certainly be it," says Bob Bell, new-release buyer for the Wherehouse stores, the nation's largest music retail chain.

"Retail will be better prepared for this record [than Backstreet Boys' last one] and even better than with 'N Sync. And it is the holidays, which means more traffic in the stores." James Baker, music director of adult pop radio station KBIG-FM (104.3), is hearing conservative projections of 1.1 million for the album's first week, although he expects the predictions to grow as the release date approaches.

However, for his older audience largely made up of thirty something females--who have embraced the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync along with their teen counterparts--there is a bit of a burnout factor. "We're kind of saturated with the boy bands and 'N Sync has a new song we're considering playing," Baker says. "So it will be interesting." In any case, the Backstreet Boys are the odds-on favorite for top sales through the Christmas season, according to a panel of radio programmers and retailers surveyed by Pop Eye.

Overall, these professionals see a very strong field, with new releases from such longtime superstar acts as Madonna and U2, more recent breakthroughs including Ricky Martin, Limp Bizkit and the Wallflowers, and such new figures as rapper Xzibit coming.

We used their predictions to handicap the top pop music races in the major genres and radio formats, with some clear favorites--especially those whose appeal crosses age demographic lines--and a few interesting dark horses. And that's not even considering the Beatles' hits collection:

Pop Win--Backstreet Boys. Place--Madonna's "Music" (due Tuesday). There's a summer feeling to the dance-floor, good-times bounce of the title single. But to the panelists, any season can be Madonna's season, as her old audience grows with her and she seems eternally able to appeal to a new crop of kids as well. Show--Ricky Martin's untitled album (Nov. 14). The general perception is that he has to prove he has staying power. But he has a huge audience ready to give him a chance. Dark horse--98 Degrees' "Revelation" (Sept. 26). Could be the foursome's time to step up to the Backstreet and 'N Sync level.

All the details about the new album

As the group continues to put the finishing touches on its eagerly awaited new album, the Backstreet Boys have settled on a title and release date for the effort, as well as its first single.

Sources tell MTV News that the Boys will deliver "Black And Blue," their third studio album (Try FORTH! Don't these people do any research??), to stores on November 21.

Fans will get a taste of the new LP on October 3 (Kevin's Birthday!) when the first single, "Shape Of My Heart," hits radio. The group gave fans their first glimpse of what awaits on the album last month with "It's True," a new track included on a series of CDs made available through Burger King (see Backstreet Boys Say 'It's True' On Burger CDs").

That song turned up on a series of three CDs released by the fast-food chain that also included live Backstreet material. While the rest of the new album remains under wraps, Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean has said that fans can expect to see various influences, from rock and R&B to hip-hop and country (see "Backstreet's A.J. Dishes On New Record").

The disc will also find the Boys once again teaming with pop mastermind Max Martin, who produced the group's first two albums, as well as tracks for 'NSYNC and Britney Spears.

The wedding on Entertainment Tonight
If you missed Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday well read on...

The Article

No, it is not a "vicious" rumor! Thousands of teenage divas will be in mourning this
week -- as the news is out that the talented BRIAN LITTRELL married LEIGHANNE WALLACE
this past Labor Day weekend.

After the stunning church ceremony, the couple danced the night away at the reception,
which took place on the entire fourth floor of the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta,
Georgia. Brian even sang a song he wrote for his new blushing bride (would you expect
anything less?). Leighanne said she was a little concerned that the night could turn
into karaoke central -- with all THE BACKSTREET BOYS being in attendance -- so she
and Brian planned ahead, and instructed the "big band" to start playing a different
tune if things got out of hand!

Speaking of hands -- Brian also apparently designed his own wedding band to match
Leighanne's 3 karat canary diamond engagement ring. The creative hunk said he really
wanted to have a big ring so that when he grabbed the mic -- everyone could see it!
The end result? A gorgeous thick band with caviar beading and canary and white diamonds.

BSB and others to provide instrumentals at the Olympics.

Some of the biggest names in music, including the Backstreet Boys and Santana, will be providing instrumental remixes of some of their biggest hits to the Olympics in Sydney.

The songs -- some decided, some not -- will provide the musical background to the televised events, creating a musical soundtrack for the agony of defeat, the thrill of winning, and the overall sprit of the Olympic games.

In addition to the Backstreet Boys and Santana ("Maria Maria," "Smooth"), the Goo Goo Dolls ("Dizzy," "Slide"),Christina Aguilera ("What a Girl Wants"), 98 Degrees("I Do"), Will Smith("Freakin' It"), Robbie Williams ("Millennium"), Edwin McCain ("I'll Be"), Vitamin C ("Graduation Day"), Lonestar "Amazed"), Men at Work's Colin Hay ("Down Under"), Yanni, the Bee Gees, composer Frank Wildhorn, and Bill Ray Cyrus, among others, will also contribute songs for the occasion.

The music used for the Olympics will range from Australian Aboriginal to classical, rock and roll, jazz, and hip-hop -- all from a vast array of regions and countries. The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney run from Sept. 15 to Oct. 1 and will be televised on CBS.

Howie marks second anniversary of caroline's death with 2 benefit shows.

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough will mark the second anniversary of his sister Caroline's death with two benefit shows in her memory. Howie will perform in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on September 13 and Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 15 to benefit the Caroline Dorough-Cochran Lupus Foundation.

The shows come on the heels of a June 25 Lupus 2000 benefit concert that saw Howie help raise more than $100,000 for the fight against the disease (see "Backstreet's Howie Raises $100,000 For Charity"). Howie's sister Caroline died of lupus, an autoimmune disease, on September 12, 1998, and the singer launched the foundation shortly thereafter. The nonprofit outfit supports lupus research, education, and financial assistance for individuals living with the disease who cannot afford treatment. "This disease took my sister from my family," Howie said in a statement announcing the shows. "It means the world to me to have friends, family, and the public to help find a cure for lupus.

Hopefully, in the near future, a cure will be found and no other family will have to endure such a tragic loss as our family has endured."

While prepping for the solo shows, Howie is still maintaining his Backstreet duties, which include preparing for the November release of BSB's next album.

New Album This Fall

The guys have been out of the spotlight a bit lately, with fellow boy band ’N Sync commanding the charts and the attention of the MTV audience this summer. That could all change later this fall, when Backstreet Boys release their yet-to-be-named follow up to Millennium which was the best-selling album of 1999. The album also set a new record for first week album sales, with fans snapping up over a million copies. The record has since been broken by ’N Sync’s No Strings Attached which sold 2.5 million albums in its debut week in March.

The new Backstreet Boys album is expected in stores November 21, but for now fans clamoring for more can check out a cartoon version of the band as they pose as cyber-heroes in a Web series from Stan Lee Media. New installments of The Backstreet Project cartoon are posted on their home page every two weeks.

Brian gets married!

Go to http://backstreet.net for a full story of this event. This is a clip from that article

A T L A N T A, Sept. 3 - One of the members of the Backstreet Boys got married Saturday. Band member Brian Littrell married Leighanne Wallace at Peachtree Christian Church in Midtown at 6 p.m. White and black stretch limousines brought about 300 people to the ceremony. The couple, who bought a house earlier this year in an Atlanta suburb, was able to get married without the usual mob of young fans that follow the band. Littrell and Wallace met in Los Angeles in 1997 when she appeared in the Backstreet Boys video As Long As You Love Me. Wallace grew up in Marietta. Her mother and stepfather, Shirley and Jack Tolbert, still live there.

Backstreet Boys Action figures

The Backstreet Boys action figures hit Burger King outlets Monday. And the limited-edition CDs. And the "For the Fans" exclusive video. While thethree different CDs feature various live tracks from the Atlanta-based group's recent "Millennium" tour, all contain a new song, "It's True," from the Boys' upcoming album. Brian Littrell, the Boys action figure that features bulging biceps and calves, shoots a flaming basketball when you place him on a special launcher mechanism. Alas, as Buzz toiled away doing research Monday, ours did not work all that well. The action figures are themselves a tie-in, hawking the group's Internet superhero adventures, written by "Spider-man" creator Stan Lee. And yes, Monday also served as the premiere of the first two episodes of "The BackstreetProject" (http://www.backstreetproject.com/) as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The producers at Cheiron, the Stockholm-based production company which created the internationally revered sound of Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and 'N Sync, will close their 8-year-old operation by the end of December, just as their 3-year-old production and publishing joint venture with the Zomba Group expires. The company was founded by producer Denniz PoP, who died of cancer two years ago. It is home to 10 in-house producers, including Max Martin, who will continue to work together, sources tell Billboard Bulletin, although the studios will move from Zomba's Stockholm offices. Tom Talomaa, Cheiron's business affairs manager/co-founder, says "everyone will keep on working as usual. We're just moving studios and changing the name of our company." Clients including Backstreet Boys -- for whom Martin penned the smash hit "I Want It That Way" -- and Steps will be retained.

Well, you hardcore BSB fans, would know that most of time it's DoubleTrees Hotel where Britney and 'N Sync usually stay at too. Many girls stayed at the Marriot to see if they were staying there, but NOPE!

Nassau Coliseum
For all of you who have nosebleeds, Nassau Coliseum is the place to have nosebleeds. I had nosebleeds and we saw incredibly as long as you aren't sitting in the back of the skyboxes. But eventually, me and my friends ran all the way down to the second level and sat on the steps watching. Howie RAPS!!! It was so cute! The tourbook is totally worth the $20! None of them really just stay on one side, so you get to see all of them. Nassau is really small, so its not that bad! You wouldn't believe how many girls who didn't have tickets showed up. They lined up hoping to get tickets..SOLD OUT DUH! These like 10 girls wore TOWELS...with something about BSB on them. But it definitely got Kevin's attention. No offense, but this concert is soo much better than N Sync. The special effects - lights, smoke, surfing, flying - were HOT! The boys actually got dressed underneath the stage because there was no way to get out of there. Anyone know who won the WBLI or Z100 contests there?

Colorado- Students at Columbine high school staged a protest today against the popular "boy band" the Backstreet boys. They are asking that all teens not purchase their CD's, albums, T-shirts or attend their concerts. This protest and voicing comes just days after the MTV music awards where the band performed. The BSB performed one of there hits and came out on stage in dark trenchcoats. One student from the rally was qouted as saying. " We feel they(backstreet boys) were mocking our shooting incident." The costumes were considered to be in very poor taste and a very slap in the face to those who suffered and died in the terrible incident. The students have formed a committee to consultant an attorney to see if any charges could be brought against the band members for their distastefulness. The members of the band could not be reached for any comment. A publicist with the band states that this was not a malicious punch towards the students or families of the high school. The BSB states they feel as if they have done nothing wrong and plan to vehemently defendant against any legal action taken.

Conference?
BSB and their management has set up a press conference on 9/27, there was no mention of what it is about since they want to keep it secretive, so it'll be interesting to see what they're planning to announce. It says on MP3.com that TLC are also making a major announcement on Monday, so it may have something to do with that.

Whose Still Hot?
This was a poll among 1000 kids. "As we leave summer '99 behind us," said Gene Del Vecchio, founder of CoolWorks(R), "kids all across America say that the Backstreet Boys are still cool, obtaining more votes than any other band or performer." They are followed closely by 'N Sync and Britney Spears. Interestingly, most of the appeal of these groups comes from girls, particularly in the 13-and-under crowd. Others listed include Limp Bizkit and Ricky Martin."

BACKSTREET BOYS in E. RUTHERFORD: By the time you're done reading this sentence, the Backstreet Boys will have sold another 10,000,000 albums. Like it or not, these Florida natives are the biggest thing in the music industry. If they put out an album where they recited (and harmonized, of course) the Gettysburg Address, it would probably outsell Shania Twain, R.E.M and Metallica combined. And now you have a chance to witness the magic firsthand, as the Backstreet Boys take on the Continental Airlines Arena on Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25. You can bet your New Kids on the Block albums that they'll be sure to have the Continental Airlines Arena rocking like it's never been rocked before. Bruce who?

Someone Speaks Out
This from a filmmaker who made the movie "Splendor." He is addressing the issue of the whole Columbine and teenage murder thing. Restricting their access to movies, video games or shock rockers like Marilyn Manson is missing the point, Araki concludes. ``Marilyn Manson obviously speaks to these kids. But he didn't create their feelings. I don't think if kids listened to the Backstreet Boys, they'd be any happier.''

Christina Aguilera: Take 2
``Me and Britney show a little tummy, and, `Oh my God! They're being sexy, too sexy for young girls! What kind of an image is this to portray?' Whereas, guy bands like 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys, they'll do, like, repeated pelvis thrusts to an audience of 13-year-olds and nobody says anything.''

BSB Recognized - AOL Message Boards
I woke up, grabbed the Boston Herald and looked at the front. To my surprise the BSB are on the front page with a huge picture of Nick and Brian under the bold title: "Backstreet Boys Rock the Fleet Center"The review was really great too. The critic talked about how incredible their voices are and how the tour is the most popular in the country and most importantly about how after he saw the show, the critic realized why the BSB are set apart from "boybands like NSync" and Britney Spears, etc., because they put on a show like no other and look like they will be around for a long time to come. It also showed other pictures of Brian belting it and the whole article was just really great!

"I have been in contact with several members of the boys' management the FIRM, as well as Janet Kleinbaum of Jive records. There will be NO meet and greets on this tour. The only backstage passes will be close family members and friends of the boys, and press passes. The only type of meet and greets that will take place will be for the "Make a Wish Foundation" I am disappointed by this news. Jeff Kwatinetz of the FIRM told me that the boy's stopped doing meet and greets towards the end of the European tour, because they were just plan getting worn out."

Blink 182 Turns to BSB For Ideas
Last night, Making the Video with Blink 182 was on, which they did a parady of 98degrees, BSB, Christina, and Britney videos. They watched BSB videos to get ideas. They say they can be just as hot as boy bands. They put on the famous white suits like BSB in IWITW. One of them had the infamous cowboy hat AJ wears sometimes. One of them wanted to give a message to BSB saying something like "I am ready to work, I am on fire." Then again, one of them says in the shower to the camera, "Tell Me Why, Ain't nothing but a heartbreak, heartache." Then they shoot in front of a plane. Two of them had hats only AJ would wear. They also had the fans surrounding them with signs. You can tell they also used a clip like "All I Have to Give."

The Cyber Crusaders

They sell records faster than a speeding bullet! They're able to leap over other boy bands in a singlebound! So why shouldn't the superstar Backstreet Boys becomesuperheroes, too? Ninja-Man Nick has kung fu prowess.

Beginning Sunday, the official B-Boys Web site (www.backstreetboys.com) will feature the fab five as "The Cyber Crusaders," the first-ever online animated series created for a pop group. Twenty-two biweekly "webisodes" make up the series, which was created by comicbook legend Stan Lee. You'll be hearing a lot about The Crusaders. To hype the series, fast-food giant Burger King has bankrolled a $15 million promotional tie-in campaign, allowing fans to snap up one of 40 million free Backstreet Boy action figureswith every meal. "This is the largest off-line promotion ever for an online event," says Peter Paul, co-founder of StanLee Media. Visitor from Space The Web story line closely follows comic book conventions.

During a Backstreet Boys concert, a spaceship crash-lands next to the stadium where they'reperforming. A.J. can shoot a gun like nobody's business. A beautiful alien emerges, and engages the group in a mission to protect the Earth from invading creatures. Each Boy gets an enchanted amulet granting himspecial powers. A.J. McLean is the ultimate marksman. Brian Littrell can jump higher than all the L.A. Lakers put together. Howie Dorough reads minds and projects illusions. Kevin Richardson can lift objects heavier than elephants, and Nick Carter has enough martial-arts skills to make Bruce Lee look like Urkel. The Web series' dialogue won't appear in comic book "balloons" — you'll hear the Boys' own voices through your computer's speakers. Where Beatles Went Before. As big as the Backstreet spectacle will be, it isn't the first time pop stars have reimagined themselves as cartoons. The Beatles had their "Yellow Submarine"movie in 1968.

The Jackson Five were Saturday morning 'toons in the early '70s. Later in that decade, Kiss created a Marvel comic book, which — or so the hype went — featured drops of their own blood in the red ink. Speedy Brian can move faster than a speeding bullet. The Kiss project was also conceived by Lee, best known for creating characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men. But the Backstreet Boys project got its start when Carter approached Lee to create a comic book for the act to hawk at concerts. That idea eventually grew into the Web series.

Rolling Stone music editor Joe Levy says such lighthearted depictions of the group won't reduce their credibility. "Their fans will forgive them anything," he says. But Levy adds that, eventually, "There is a sincere danger of overmerchandising." Right now, however, the Internet series should only enhance what has long been the Backstreet Boys' greatest super power: making teenage girls scream.

Cheiron Studios to close down.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden's Cheiron Studio, where artists including Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys recorded, is to close, Radio Stockholm reported Wednesday. ``Cheiron is being shut down for emotional reasons, partly because of the death of Denniz PoP two years ago,'' studio co-owner Tom Talomaa told the radio station.

PoP owned the Cheiron label until his death at the age of 35 from cancer. It was PoP who brought Max Martin, 29, one of Sweden's brightest record producers, into Cheiron. Martin's team produced the title track to the new Spears album ``Oops! ... I Did It Again,'' which sold 1.3 million copies in its first week, giving Spears the best debut- week album sales ever for a female artist. Cheiron under Martin has been compared by the Los Angeles Times to a band that alternates singers -- writing the songs, playing the instruments, engineering and mixing the recordings then bringing in the artist near the end of the process.

It groups six or seven producers. ``They've decided to split up and go their separate ways,'' Radio Stockholm entertainment correspondent Viktor Petrovski told Reuters.

Among Martin's other hits at Cheiron were ``I Want It That Way'' by the Backstreet Boys, ``...Baby One More Time'' by Britney Spears, ``That's the Way It Is'' by Celine
Dion and ``I Want You Back'' by 'N Sync. Talomaa and Cheiron were not immediately available for comment. Cheiron is part of the Swedish pop music phenomenon that also produced ABBA and Ace of Bass -- another Cheiron name. A report last year showed that Sweden's music industry accounted for 0.5 percent of theScandinavian country's exports. That is an estimated one percent of the global music market worth some $40 billion -- not bad for a country of only 8.9 million.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note at Cheiron Studios website.

Here's what you can find at the Cheiron Studios website:

After eight years of incredible joy but also enormous pain (the death of our beloved partner Denniz Pop) it's time to move on. Cheiron was created with the intention of having fun, making a few hits and not getting to serious about it. At the end of this year we have fulfilled our commitments and are able to do as we please. We feel that the "hype" of Cheiron has become bigger than itself and it's time to quit while we're ahead. Denniz made all the incredible success we have experienced possible and we want Cheiron to be remembered like it is today. We would like to thank everybody who shared their talent with us, to many to mention here, and hope we will see you in the future. We will continue to work together in various constellations in the spirit of Denniz Pop.

HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT

Who knew that a little ol' boy group could make touring giants Garth Brooks and Madonna look like Molly Hatchet on the Holiday Inn circuit?

Get out your record books for this one, Backstreet Boys fans.

According to the group's management, Backstreet Boys sold 765,000 tickets on Saturday, and in the process sold out all 53 dates of the group's Into the Millennium Tour, which runs from Sept. 14 through Dec. 12. (They hit Rupp Arena on Nov. 26.)

So that means the heartbroken in Lexington who missed out on tickets Saturday were not alone in their despair.

Yes, 765,000 people across North America will get to see the group (which includes Kentucky cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson), but plenty walked away empty-handed.

Ticket brokers, who no doubt scooped up thousands of Backstreet Boys tickets, are said to be asking about $85 for upper-arena tickets for the Cincinnati show; $150 for lower arena; and up to $500 for the first four rows.

Backstreet Boys' sales continue hot year for concert industry

That sucking sound you heard Saturday was $30 million worth of Backstreet Boys tickets being snatched up. According to the group's management, BSB sold 765,000 tickets on Saturday, and in the process sold-out all 53 scheduled dates of the group's Into the Millennium Tour, which runs from Sept. 14 through Dec. 12. It's yet another strong sign for the concert industry, which continues to enjoy an especially lucrative year. "That's as hot as it gets," says Ray Waddell, who covers the concert industry for Amusement Business magazine. He notes that it's unusual for an entire tour to go on sale the same day, and that groups often test the waters first to gauge fan consumer reaction a few markets at a time. Not BSB. "That speaks to their confidence," says Waddell. BSB co-manager Jeff Kwatinetz explained the strategy: "It was a lot of extra work and left us no room for error. But the upside is we created an event."

In an unprecedented show of popularity, popsters Backstreet Boys have sold all 765,000 tickets for their North American tour in just one day, generating an estimated $30 million. Tickets for the 11-week, 39-city arena tour, which kicks off Sept. 14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., sold out as soon as they went on sale Saturday -- the vast majority within an hour. The boxoffice activity for the Sears Presents Backstreet Boys Into the Millennium Tour, which runs through Dec. 2 and reaches the Forum in the Los Angeles area on Oct. 19-20, is unprecedented in the concert business. "This is kind of exciting. This sale shows this band's career is clearly on the upswing," said Jeff Kwatinetz, co-founder of the Firm, which manages Backstreet Boys. "We are going to have sold-out audiences seeing one of the best shows they will ever see, and that will take this band to the next level."

The Backstreet Boys are slowly but surely working on their songwriting skills. Brian Littrell, who co-wrote three tracks from the Boys' chart-topping Millennium album, has co-written another tune for Jive Records' next groomed-for-stardom boy balladeer, Don Philip.

Littrell co-wrote the song, entitled "How Did I Ever," with producer/songwriter Eric Foster White, who is producing Phillip's as-yet-untitled Jive debut. It was undecided at press time whether or not the song will make the final cut of Philip's album, set for an early 2000 release.

Guys Album Out This Fall

You may think that all of the Backstreet Boys record together all the time. That's not true. The day The Early Show's Mark McEwen met up with the boys in a studio in the Bahamas, Brian Littrell was back in the United States, and A.J. McLean was a no-show. He was recovering from being a bit under the weather. So it was just McEwen, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, and Nick Carter.

Kevin said he enjoys recording in the Bahamas because it's "just a great vibe. I mean, when you're feeling like you got writer's block or something, you can walk out the front door, and walk right out on the beach, and with a tape recorder and a pen and pad and just let it come out."

It's probably hard to think about work in the Bahamas, with so many welcome distractions. Howie took time out to hang out with Gloria Estefan, attending her post-concert party at Nassau's ultra-luxurious Atlantis resort.

Nick was just named one of People magazine's "most beautiful people of 2000." But in the Bahamas, he's just another one of the boys, making music with his Backstreet buds.

When McEwen reminded them of the hoopla when 'N Sync broke the Backstreet Boys' one-day sales record, Kevin quipped, "Broke it? Shattered it!"

Nick chimed in, "You know what? Things are made to be broken. Howie: "We'll give them a run for the money on the next album." Kevin: "As long as people like the record and they buy it, that's all that matters."

The Backstreet Boys' new album is due this fall. You or someone you know owns a copy of their last CD, Millennium, which it sold 11 million copies in the U.S. alone.

As for their new material, the guys are all taking a little more creative control this time around, a lot of different sounds, reflecting their individual interests. They expect about 12 tracks, and Howie joked they might call the album Twelve Flavors of Candy.

Backstreet Trio Reach New Depths Learning to Scuba Dive in the Bahamas
Source: Backstreet.Net
NASSAU, Bahamas--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--May 24, 2000--Three members of the Backstreet Boys -- presently recognized as the biggest pop group in the world -- made the most of recent recording session in the Bahamas by becoming certified scuba divers.

Nick Carter, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson received their PADI Open Water Scuba Certifications through Stuart Cove's Dive South Ocean resort just south of Nassau. The trio, who proved to be ``underwater naturals'' according to instructors, were able to explore shallow shipwrecks, colorful coral reefs and even historic underwater sets used in the filming of several James Bond films.

``It was tough getting them out of the water once they discovered how comfortable and enjoyable scuba diving can be,'' said Michelle Cove, co-owner of the resort and the group's instructor. ``The looks on their faces after that first dive was so memorable, I don't think they'll ever forget it.''

During their certification dives, the three young divers logged time on the famous ``Bahama Mama'' shipwreck, clowned around on the underwater airplane wreck used in the James Bond film ``Thunderball'' and even had an encounter with a group of Caribbean Reef sharks. ``That was the highlight of the day when the sharks showed up,'' Cove recalls

*IMPORTANT!!*

Source: Yahoo! Clubs - Backstreet Lovers' Unite

I opened my issue of Backstreet Backpack yesterday, and I came upon this:
"'I bought another MILLENNIUM CD the first week of sales for the NSA CD and on my receipt I saw something weird and I was wondering if THIS HAPPENED to anyone else. It said I bought the Millennium CD which was normal...and then below it said "NO STRING ATTACHED 3 [3 copies] $0.00" That's what it said exactly and I am guessing it said that I bought 3 NSA CD's and I DIDN'T EVEN BUY ONE!'"

What Backpack had to say:
"It seems as though this happened to a lot of people and from different states, so we're thinking of emailing JIVE RECORDS and asking them if they created these fake sales numbers." "This information has been confirmed by adults and over 23 other readers."

Alright, I'm helping out www.onlinepop.co.uk in solving this case. Five JIVE executives haven't responded, and a national newspaper is now on the case. So PLEASE, if anyone has one of those false receipts, or have ANY information on this, please contact me! Thanks!

THE ONE (3:46) - Jive

Done. Score another massive hit for Backstreet Boys with this unquestionably sunshine-splashed instant smash, the fourth single from 1999's No. 1 album, ``Millennium.'' Truly, there's a battle of the Jive labelmates this time, as 'N Sync's new release hits the airwaves simultaneously. Odds are that this song may reach the summit first, thanks to a feel-good melody line that embraces the senses the first time through. With a message of steadfast support and empowerment from the boys, teens will be swooning, while adults, as usual, simply won't be able to resist singing along. On-target production from consistent team Max Martin and Kristian Lundin only ups the ante (note, too, that Backstreeter Brian Littrell gets a co-writing credit on this one). Get ready for ``The One.'' Simply, you're not going to find a better pure pop song this season

Source: Backstreet. Net

Howie D and AJ were in Cologne on Friday. They were at a local radio station and after that, they went to VIVA television. The "Interaktiv" show is broadcast from 3 pm to 5 pm and they showed up at 4:20.They talked about their work on the new album and answered some questions from fans. After the show was over, they came outside to meet the fans. Some of the people out there had spent the night outside the studios so they could be sure to be in the front row.

Everything was fine and the guys seemed to be having have fun. They signed some stuff and let the people take photos. Somehow, a girl managed to get over the barriers and throw herself at AJ. The security guards took her away and AJ went on signing stuff. All of a sudden, she got loose and ran towards AJ again. The security guards had a hard time controlling her. Some say that she knocked AJ to the floor and that she later fainted. AJ was apparently scratched and seemed to be quite surprised that this was happening.

At the World Music Awards

On Entertainment Tonight, they showed clips of the stars on the red carpet at the World Music Awards. AJ and Howie were there sharing an umbrella. They were hoping to catch a glimpse of Micheal Jackson. AJ admitted that he still has a white glove like Jackson's in a drawer somewhere. From what I could tell, Howie was wearing a white jacket and shirt and AJ had on a leather jacket and shades

Brian at Golf Tournament - May 8th
Source: Backstreet Millennium

Hi! I know a lot of you have been getting mad at Brian lately because of how he acted at the Kentucky Derby, but I have a story about him and LeighAnne that might put everyones' minds at ease about the whole situation! On May 8th, Brian was participating in a celebrity golf tournament in Richmond. Throughout the game, I was watching Brian closely to see how he acted towards the fans that were there, and to see if LeighAnne was trying to be bossy or tell him how to act. Let me tell you, both Brian and LeighAnne were VERY nice and sweet to everyone they talked to! LeighAnne just had genuine smile on her face the whole time, and whenever a reporter asked her about Brian, she just had this glow about her.

Brian was in a great mood (maybe because he was with all of his family and friends), and he looked so cute playing golf! He's sooo short (but still really cute)!! Even his little dogs were there! I was waiting for Brian or LeighAnne to do something mean or rude to a fan... but it just didn't happen! After the game, reporters were asking both Brian and LeighAnne a bunch of questions (they were on the news later that night), so we (the fans) still had to wait for him to get done. But even when he was just standing there, fans would yell out at him , and he would turn around and smile really big and wave at them! Some people were even yelling out at LeighAnne (to say hi), and she smiled and waved, too!

After they were finished, Brian came over to where the fans were and waved at everyone. He signed a few autographs and let people take pics of him. But he was still with his family and fiance, so he didn't really stay too long. It's like he was being pulled in all different directions (by the fans, reporters, family, ect). I talked to a few people who met him after the golf tournament and they said he was very nice and kinda of a quiet type of person. But then again, I'd be kinda quiet, too, if a person I 'd never ever met before came up to me! I asked these fans who met him if he was ever rude to them and they all said he was really nice!

Info on Howie's role on Roswell (Spolier)
Source: Backstreet.Net

Here's some info about Howie's role in Roswell's season finale. Please be warned that this is kind of a spoiler.
Less chucklesome is the news that Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough is going extraterrestrial for an upcoming Roswell. He'll have minimal lines (we're talking three words), and my sources say he won't interact with the leads. But hey, it's a start.

***Note, crashdown's sources tell us that Howie's scene is the next to last scene in the episode. The pod squad uses the communication orbs (from Sexual Healing and Crazy) which triggers communication devices used by other aliens on Earth. Howie is shown opening a drawer in a high rise Manhattan apartment, pulling out a beeping alien communication device, and staring at it. He then utters the words, "It has begun."

The Best will survive?

"The rivalry between the TWO HUGEST BOY BANDS appears to be growing! So who "started it?" You decide -- we're just here to give you the facts:

During his recent solo tour as "Johnny No-Name," (the Backstreet Boys' A.J.) vowed that when BSB's new album drops this October, N Sync will say "bye, bye, bye" to their highest first-week sales record for No Strings Attached. According to Wall of Sound, N Sync's not threatened.

"I feel a little sorry for them," Joey Fatone says, "just for the fact that they have to prove something. They're very successful at what they do, and very talented." (Way to kill them with kindness, Joey!) Lance Bass added: "The thing is, if [the Backstreet Boys] don't break the record in October, what does that mean? Does it mean the album's going to suck? It's going to be good. I just hope if they don't break it, people still get it. That doesn't mean that it's not good." The fans will be the JUDGE OF THAT WHEN OCTOBER COMES....

And just 17 days since its launch (March 15), the hit rate on the website is set to soar past Paul McCartney's gig at The Cavern, which was picked up by more than 50 million fans, by the end of the month (April). McCartney will also be filming Puff Daddy's Wembley Arena, London, shows this weekend for a future web broadcast.

Carter is currently putting the finishing touches on her as-yet-untitled debut in teen-idol Mecca, Orlando, Florida with LFO producers Brad Young and Dow Brain. April Showers - Wedding Showers
Source: http://www.cdnow.com

Several prominent members of your favorite bands will be tying the knot to their respective SWEETHEARTS in 2000, including Backstreet Boys' Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell and Blink-182 singer/bassist Mark Hoppus, but you'll be surprised to know which artists have registered for the most expensive gifts and which have chosen to receive more humble accolades of their marriage.

More surprising, however, is the richest of the grooms-to-be -- Richardson and Littrell (20 million records sold). If you're wondering what Richardson and fiancée Kristin Willits will be sleeping under, a good bet would be a $70 Charter Club duvet. If you're wondering what they will be using to dry off their wet bodies after a shower, a pair of $20 Calvin Club terry bath towels would be a good guess.

As for Littrell, he and fiancée Leighanne Wallace are hoping for a $220 Wedgwood sterling silver casserole dish, a $167 set of Oneida Satin Accent silverware (OK, but, they've got millions of dollars and they're buying silverware like Oneida, which you can also buy at K-Mart?), a $15 Pfaltzgraff Naturewood coffee mug for drinking down their java, and an $84 Wedgwood sterling silver sugar bowl. You guys can check out http://www.WeddingChannel.com if you are actually serious about getting the boys a gift.

According to some this site may be a hoax, but why would you pay all the ISP charges for that? Apparently some people have booked themselves as Backstreet members entering such things as members of NSYNC being their ushers. What mature people there are online!

Howie to make a solo album
Source: Backstreet.Net

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough is the second member of the group to hint at plans for a solo album, as a full studio LP from AJ McLean looks set to become a reality.
Howie D, who is kick-starting an acting career with a role in the film Bloom, said any solo recording would reflect his Puerto-Rican roots. 'I've been asked about possibly doing the Ricky Martin/Gloria Estefan Spanglish thing,' he confirmed.

AJ, who has spoken of plans for a live album under his alias of Johnny No Name, now looks set to enter the studio for a full-length LP of rock covers and new material.

Howie said he is considering a solo tour after making a surprise appearance on stage with AJ at his New York show on Sunday, but was adamant the solo projects will not mean an end to the Backstreet Boys.

'We're a group of five guys, but we always said throughout the whole experience that we would support each other to do individual projects here and there.'

One Million Teenage Girls Stricken With Backstreetenemia Epidemic!
Source: Backstreet.Net

Canandian Health Officials Strongly Warn Against Exposure To Brian, Kevin, Nick, Howie and A.J.

TORONTO - The Canadian Department of Health and Welfare declared a national state of emergency Friday, as the number of teenage girls stricken with Backstreetenemia passed the one million mark.

According to HEW Security John Gardner, "Over one million North Americans between the ages of 13 and 21 have tested positive for Backstreetenemia, a disease leaving them incapable of concentrating on their schoolwork, keeping their rooms neat or behaving in a manner understandable to their parents."

"Physical symptoms of the virus are varied," commented Gardner. "Females seen to suffer the worst, displaying fits of shrieking, convulsions, tearing at their own faces, and in the most extreme cases, as witnessed recently at the Skydome Skytent, total panic and loss of consciousness."

Prolonged exposure to the virus can ultinately wear down the immune system, creating a severe mental condition called Backstreetmentia.

Wild emotional swings are also identified with the disease. Many victims have been observed in extreme rapture during television musical shows, only to break down sobbing minutes later upon learning music stores have sold out of "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely." Experts have identified this condition as "Backstreet Depressive Disorder."

Statistics show that the disease strikes teenagers hardest. Most people over forty were Beatlinated against the condition by Trudeau's adolescent immunization programs of the 1960's.

At first, the Centre for Disease Control officials theorized that the holding of hands spread Backstreetenemia. However, they now believe it is communicable by seeing Brian, Kevin, Nick, Howie and A.J. just standing there.

While some biologists believe that Backstreetenemia evolved from a rare strain of the NKOTB virus cross-bred with boy-pop bacteria, others say it origenated in the Orlando, Florida area, and gained potency during epidemics in Europe and Asia before finally striking North America.

Parents, meanwhile, are pressed for a cure. "How many more girls will this disease claim?" asked James Woodson of Jamaica, N.Y. His daughter Jessica succumbed to a full-blown case of Kevingitis.

As biologists race to isolate the pop pathogen, hospitals and emergency Backstreetenemia- relief clinics across Canada are jammed with the crying, shouting victims of the epidemic.

"This is without a doubt the worst pop-music related illness in history," said William Horst, director of Sick Kids Hospital's "I Want It That Way Ward." "It's worse than the rocking pneumonia, the boogie-woogie flu and the hippy-hippy shakes put together."

Emergency immunizations are under way, now that scientsts have developed a four-part injection that provides protection from not only Nick's sensitive nature and Brian's fun-loving charm, but also the highly contagious appeal of A.J

Tearin' Up The Charts

How 'N Sync made history by selling 2.4 million albums in the first week. And what this means for Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys

First they broke hearts -- now they're breaking records. 'N Sync's sophomore album, ''No Strings Attached,'' will debut at No.1 on Thursday, having moved 2.41 million copies -- more than double the sales of any album in music history. (The prior record holders were the Backstreet Boys at 1.13 million.) Not only does this stand the industry on its head and give 'N Sync their first No. 1 album (their debut sold 10 million copies but never reached the top spot), it also ups the stakes for forthcoming albums by their Jive Records label mates Britney Spears (May 16) and the Backstreet Boys (fall).

How'd 'N Sync do it?

Meet the Press In the three weeks before the album's March 21 release, 'N Sync did more media than Darva Conger, Rick Rockwell, and the relatives of Elián Gonzalez combined (MTV, ''Good Morning America,'' ''Saturday Night Live,'' the Oscars). ''It didn't matter what it was,'' says their manager Johnny Wright of this multimedia blitz. ''They weren't picky. They weren't lazy. They did whatever it took to get the message out.'' Adds James Grandoni, VP of purchasing at the 185-store National Record Mart: ''You had to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to know that this record was coming out.''

Strategic Leaks While most of the industry is in a hand-wringing sweat over bootlegged songs on the Internet, Wright thinks cyber leaks actually aided the boys in reaching their sales record. ''Some people got the album ahead of time -- we don't know how -- and actually put a lot of the tracks up on the Internet,'' he tells EW Online, ''so people had the opportunity to hear more than just the single the radio was playing. I think that helped a lot.''

Stock Those Shelves What has the industry buzzing is not only that 2.4 million fans rushed to the stores, but that teen-pop behemoth Jive Records was in a unique and almost unprecedented position to meet the stores' demand. Jive shipped 4.2 million copies for the album's March 21 street date, then sent out 2.3 million in reorders on March 22. ''In every instance they had enough product pressed and ready to go, and turned around orders in a day,'' says retailer Grandoni. ''If they hadn't been ready for it, stores would have sold out after a couple days which would have limited their first-week sales.''

So what do 'N Sync's sales mean for Britney and the Backstreet Boys? Although it seemed unimaginable just a few days ago, Wright (who also manages Spears) thinks Britney has a shot at topping 2.41 million in her debut week: ''She's a tiger, and she'll do everything in her power to do that.'' And now that Jive has honed its promotion and distribution to a sweet science, insiders say the Backstreet Boys could even regain their record for first-week sales. Parents, start raising that allowance.

N Sync to break Backstreet Record?
Source: Wall of Sound

Move over, Backstreet Boys. 'N Sync's new album, No Strings Attached, is poised to break sales records, reportedly selling more than a million copies in its first day on the shelves. Plus, the boy band has just announced its first round of tour dates.
Though final figures won't be available until next week, it looks as though No Strings Attached will break the first- week sales record set last year by the Backstreet Boys' Millennium, which sold more than 1.13 million copies in its first week of sales. According to a source at Jive Records, which distributes both 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, the new album sold "over a million copies" in its first day — a staggering number — making it a lock to break the record.

Another record broken

Backstreet at Raptors Game
Source: Backstreet.Net

Hey! If you thought that Backstreet were in Toronto ONLY to finish off their Into the Millennium Tour, then you're wrong. Four of the five boys showed up at the Air Canada Center for the Toronto Raptors / Orlando Magic basketball game. The boys had courtside seats right beside the Raptors' bench. They were shown on television at many points in the game cheering as spectacular plays were made.

The reporters were not sure which team the boys were cheering for, since they are from Florida. However, Nick was wearing a [Vince] Carter jersey.

At halftime, the Boys did a really brief interview and Vince Carter was with them. Vince seemed to like Nick and the reporters mentioned that they were related to each other.

By the way, about the game: the Raptors won 95-91

At the Toronto concert, while Kevin (or Brian... I can't remember) was talking to the fans alone onstage, he wasn't really alone, AJ and Howie were up onstage already, but they were in the opposite side, in the dark, so no one could see them.Anyway, soon Nick joined them, but when he was going up the stairs to get up on the stage he tripped and fell!! Poor Nick!! It was funny though... Himself, AJ and Howie were laughing so hard!! Nick stayed there for a while, then he got up and looked at the fans laughing

Backstreet Boys racing towards Micheal Jackson's Record

Could Millennium by the Backstreet Boys become the highest-selling album ever, outselling even Michael Jackson's Thriller? Michael has held onto the top spot since that album was released back in 1982, selling 20 million copies in the US alone. But can you believe the Backstreet Boys' album is over halfway to beating that record, and it's only been on sale since May! They'll have to change the title to Thrillennium if that happens!

Backstreet Honoured at Juno Awards
Source: Backstreet.Net

Backstreet Boys "Millennium" took top honors as the best-selling foreign or domestic album. Backstreeters Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean's appearance to accept their prize brought some of the loudest shrieks heard all night from the crowd some estimated at 15,000.

"Canada was the first country to accept us with open arms. We're always very grateful to you guys and you'll always have a special place in our hearts," Dorough said after the presentation.

McLean said backstage once the Boys' finish their current tour, he will be embarking on a solo tour for his harder-edged Johnny Suede side project (renamed Johnny No-Name, due to copyright problems). More immediately, the full band will be dropping in on Howard Stern's radio show April 11.

"We met Howard Stern at our after party after the Grammys ... He invited us to his show, he thought we had a good sense of humor," he said. The Backstreet Boys new album, meanwhile, will be out in the fall and will likely include the band members playing their own instruments more.

Students Suspended for going to a Backstreet Boys Concert
Source: MTV.com

A private school in San Antonio apparently doesn't find clean-cut teen idols the Backstreet Boys as wholesome as most folks do, as the institution suspended four of its students last week for seeing the group in concert.

Three students at Sunnybrook Christian Academy served one-day punishments for going to the March 1 show at San Antonio's Alamodome. The mother of the fourth withdrew her son from the school.
Sunnybrook Christian Academy maintains a policy against "involvement in inappropriate music [or] dancing," according to school administrator Trudie Perez. "Our conduct must be moral and upright 24 hours a day." Perez said on Wednesday (March 8). Students are expected to adhere to school regulations against such behavior as swearing and drinking even after the school bell has rung for the day, she said.

This isn't the first time a Texas school has expressed its displeasure with popular music. In 1998, several Texas public school districts held Marilyn Manson Awareness trainings.

Of course, the Backstreet Boys are a far cry from Marilyn Manson. Viewed by many rock fans as a sugary, wholesome, even Disney-esque group, the five-member outfit led the way in last year's teen-pop explosion with songs such as "I Want It That Way" from their second album, "Millennium." Their song "The Perfect Fan" is a hymn to mothers.

"Inappropriate music would be anything that would promote values that would be contrary to Biblical values," Perez said. "We promote abstinence until marriage, so any music that would have any type of sexual content would be deemed inappropriate."

The Backstreet Boys' hit "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," from their self-titled 1996 debut, asks, "Am I sexual?" And the song "If You Want to Be Good Girl (Get Yourself a Bad Boy)," from the same album, includes the lyrics, "If you really like it hot/ Get someone who hits the spot."

A representative for the band could not be reached for comment.

Perez estimated that the school had been suspending students for attending secular concerts as far back as 1983. Most recently, a student was punished for watching a show by Latin-pop sensation Ricky Martin, she said.

The nondenominational Sunnybrook Christian Academy, founded in 1978, has 315 students from kindergarten to 12th grade, Perez said; two of the students suspended were high school age, while the other two were junior-high age.

Senior Jason Trejo was enrolled at Sunnybrook by his stepfather, Perez said. When his mother was asked, after the suspension, to sign a contract agreeing to the school's principles, she withdrew him. Neither Trejo's mother nor his stepfather could be reached for comment.

Singer Nick Carter of the pop group the Backstreet Boys and his parents, Robert and Jane Carter, have purchased a 10,000-square-foot home on 100 acres in the Santa Ynez Valley for $3.3 million.

The family, which also has a home on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, recently settled into their Santa Ynez Valley residence, which they bought in the fall. The singer, 20, has been on the road and in other states most recently.

Since the quintet was formed in 1993, the group became the world's biggest-selling boy band in 1999 with its album "Millennium."

Built about nine years ago, the Santa Ynez Valley home has a small lake, swimming pool, tennis court, barn and guest apartment.

Diana Anderson of Fred Sands, Santa Ynez Valley, had the listing, and Diane Sanders of Re/Max, Palos Verdes, represented the Carters.

Backstreet Boys: Another Level
Source: MTV Online

What else can you say? It's the Backstreet Boys, for cryin' out loud, and the scintillating fivesome from down Florida way -- that's Kevin, Howie, Brian, A.J., and young Nick (as if you didn't know) -- is currently in the midst of a U.S. tour that's seeing the group performing in the round and getting closer to fans than ever.
While the guys love performing live, that's not the only thing on their minds right now. In addition to a heap of Grammy nominations on their shiny, platinum-covered plates, they also have some tremendous plans for the future, which they shared with MTV News' very own John Norris when he caught up with the group before a show in Buffalo, New York.
In addition to spilling the Earth-shaking news that both Kevin and Brian are engaged to be married (see "Two Backstreet Boys Ready Wedding Bells"), the guys also waxed candidly about their plans for their next album -- the first for its glossy new multimillion dollar contract with Jive Records -- as well as their thoughts about their newly minted labelmates 'NSYNC (see "Backstreet Boys Address 'NSYNC's Shadow"), the pop-ification of the Grammy Awards, and how, when the tour is over, they're all going to hole themselves up in some remote location and develop their plans for taking BSB to the next level.

24th Feb, 2000

This is what the people at Backstreet.Net have to say about the Grammys. Some of it is actually pretty funny

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bad news is that the Boys didn't win a Grammy. Carlos Santana won them all: best song, best album, best old artist, best new artist, best pop group, best rap group, best polka, best alternative, best classical performance, best performance by a guy whose name is not Carlos, best music a BSB fan has never paid any attention to... and the list goes on. (Just kidding Carlos... Congratulations!)

The good news is that we got to watch them do what they do best: Entertain. And boy did they do that! Check out the picture galleries for a look at the Boys at this year's Grammy Awards.

Listen to the performances (there's two of them) in BackTracks.

Watch out Grammy! Just wait until next year!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

24th Feb, 2000

Unfortunately the guys did not pick up any Grammys last night, (better luck next year guys!) They're performance was great, Nick's new hairdo, A.J's messy look and Kevin's very long hair sums it up for the guys. Here are some excerpts from our sister site (backstreetnews) covering the Grammys

Boys Perform Amazingly
Even though they did not take anything home, they certainly got the eyes of over 60 million people on them. They did a wonderful rendition of BeeGees, Temptations, and Boys II Men songs as well as their own. Then they went on with Elton, another amazing performance performing Philadelphia Freedom.

Boys to perform with Elton John
Source: Backstreet.Net

Nothing like waiting until the 11th hour, but another slew of performers has been announced for Wednesday's (Feb. 23) Grammy Awards. Elton John and the Backstreet Boys have all been added to the A list of performers for the 24'th annual awards. Although both had been previously announced as performers, John and the Backstreet Boys have only now revealed that their performance will be together.
According to Grammy.com, "the Boys' performance will kick off with an a cappella tease of the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love," which they deliver with grace and style before segueing to a full-band snippet of the Temptations' classic "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone." They then brake into their own song with the signature vocal harmonies that have made them a worldwide phenomenon." The Boys will also provide backing vocals for "Philadelphia Freedom" when they hit the stage with Sir Elton John.

Who's Performing What
Source: Wall of Sound

LOS ANGELES — The Backstreet Boys singing backup for Elton John. Britney Spears with a short new hairdo. A Latin medley with Marc Anthony, Buena Vista Social Club, and Ricky Martin. Santana performing with Rob Thomas, and Bob Dylan presenting with Lauryn Hill. This is what you can expect at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards Wednesday night, to be held at the Staples Center and broadcast on CBS.

The show is heavy on medleys, such as Britney doing "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" with "… Baby One More Time." That's because Grammy producers didn't want to hit viewers one more time with the songs already seen on the Billboard, MTV, and American Music awards, says a Grammy spokesman. A total of 10 awards will be handed out during the broadcast, which will be hosted by Rosie O'Donnell.

Here is the lineup of the performing artists, in order of appearance:

Will Smith: "Freakin' It/Wild Wild West"
Dixie Chicks: "Goodbye Earl"
Marc Anthony: "I Need to Know"
Buena Vista Social Club: "Mami Me Gusto"
Ricky Martin: "Maria"
Whitney Houston: "It's Not Right But It's Okay/I Learned From the Best"
Backstreet Boys (performing a cappella): "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely"
Faith Hill: "Let Me Let Go"
TLC: "Unpretty/No Scrubs"
Sting with Cheb Mami: "Desert Rose"
Kid Rock: "God Only Knows/ Bawitdaba/ We're an American Band"
Britney Spears: "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart/… Baby One More Time"
Elton John with Backstreet Boys: "Philadelphia Freedom"
Diana Krall/George Benson/Erykah Badu: "I Can't Give You Anything But Love"
Joshua Bell and Edgar Meyer: "Death by Triple Fiddle"
Santana featuring Rob Thomas: "Smooth"
Ten awards will be presented on television. Some presenters include:
David Duchovny and Jennifer Lopez: Best Pop Album
Martina McBride and Ray Romano: Best Country Album
Mary J. Blige and 'N Sync: Best Male Pop Vocal
Busta Rhymes, Jamie Foxx, and Jane Krakowski: Best Female R&B Vocal
Ray Benson, Clint Black, and Lisa Hartman Black: Best Female Country Vocal
Phil Collins, Andy Williams, and Macy Gray: Song of the Year
Neil Diamond, Gloria Estefan, and Vince Gill: Record of the Year
Shirley Manson and Moby: Best Rap Album
Cher and Johnny Rzeznik: Best New Artist
Billy Joel: Legend Award (awarded to Elton John)
Bob Dylan and Lauryn Hill: Album of the Year

Transcript of AJ interview on 106.1, Seattle (Feb 22, 2000)
Source: Backstreet.Net

IMPORTANT GRAMMY INFORMATION

The DJ asked what they would be performing at the Grammy's! AJ said they WILL be performing SMTMOBL plus a little medley from groups that have inspired them - an acappella medley. He didn't mention Elton John at all! DJ asked who had inspired them and he said The Temptations, OJ, Boyz II Men. DJ asked how they were exposed to that - AJ said at home by mom and dad. Growing up he knew "My Girl" but he never knew who sang it.

So the DJ said that obviously the big news was that 2 of them were engaged. She'd read the stuff on MTV.com and knew that a lot of fans were afraid they'd break up. AJ said he thought that's what a lot of fans would think.

DJ said "Yoko Ono". AJ's comeback was that they are involved with people who are nothing but supportive of them. This won't be detrimental and the group will hold tight no matter what. AJ said THE BSB WILL LAST :). Funny - he said he was also shocked when he heard the news, on the golf course! He said Kevin was talking about it for a while and he proposed on Christmas and AJ knew about that. Brian had been talking about it. AJ said he would be 3rd in line to get married, but it will not happen till a few years- if at all. He gushed about his girlfriend a little. Said he liked to spend money on himself and that his GF doesn't ask for anything, but he gives her the world. DJ said they make like $100,000 a concert and he said yeah. (too cute)

Next they talked about Millennium and how it has sold like 15 million worldwide. AJ said they were worried about the sophomore slump....They talked about breaking the 1 day sales record. AJ said it was all so phenomenal and that the 2nd album had really helped keep the 1st album on the charts. DJ asked if they still get giddy about that stuff and celebrate

- he said oh yeah! AJ said that seeing the beautiful faces of families at shows makes it all worth it. He said the next album will be tough. They don't need to top Millennium, but it has to be a growth. He said they won't be able to top Millennium and the DJ said you never know! He said they'd like to top themselves though.

DJ asked about how they like being made fun of - like the Meaty Cheesy boys thing. AJ says he thinks its funny and that really shows them they're somebody! DJ asked if it bothers them and he said nah, they can't make everyone happy. DJ said it must be hard because everyone is in demand of their time. AJ said that he hoped if they're happy, everyone else will be too.

DJ asked who he liked as a teen. AJ said Paula Abdul, Taylor Dane, Stevie Wonder, Brian Mcknight. DJ asked if any of them had any cheesy crushes when they were younger. AJ couldn't really think of any cheesy ones but said when Howie was younger he liked Jon Secada music. DJ was really pushing to find some funny crushes. AJ said he used to have a crush on Alysa Milano and also the older sister on Charles in Charge - Nicole Eggert. Said she is now a Baywatch babe... DJ said yey we have dirt on you now!!!

So last but not least, the DJ said well when are you guys coming to Seattle? He said they were here last year in Tacoma but he didn't really know of any plans. Then he said that actually, after this tour (no idea when) he will be back in Seattle, LA and Vegas doing his Johnny Suede show!! LOL.

That's it!! I sure wish this had been Kev cause AJ talks way too fast and I could hardly keep up!

BANNOCKBURN, Ill., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- "Backstreet Boys 2000," a Gold Collectors Series(TM) Entertainment Magazine, focuses on the overwhelming success the group has experienced since the U.S. debut of its self-titled album in August 1997 and elaborates on the path that has taken the Backstreet Boys into stardom resulting in multiple albums topping the charts and four nominations for the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards -- including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year.

"Gold Collectors Series Entertainment Magazine came up with the concept for its special issue, 'Backstreet Boys 2000,' in the wake of the group's multiple Grammy Award nominations and sold-out world tour in 1999. Few artists are as 'hot' as the Backstreet Boys entering the new millennium, and this magazine aims to capture the frenzy from a fan's perspective," commented managing editor John Delavan.

"Backstreet Boys 2000" contains more than 120 exclusive photos of all five members of the group -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, and Kevin Richardson. Among these are many never-before-published photos submitted by Backstreet fans from around the world, including photos from the group's 'Into The Millennium' tour!" said Delavan.

The 128-page special edition also features exclusive articles on the group, a quiz designed to put your BSB knowledge to the test, a list of cool Backstreet Boys web sites, and four incredible pullout posters. This magazine is designed with the fans in mind!

Millennium slipped a notch this week to land at #12 on the Billboard 200. It's still going strong after 39 weeks on the chart and has sold over 30 million copies around the world. Amazingly, the self-titled US debut album is still on the charts at #97 after a 131 week run.
SMTMOBL moved up 3 positions to #4 on Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 and moved up a notch to #3 on the American Top 40. It looks like it may have peaked at #10 on the Billboard 100, slipping to #12 this week and was unable to grab the top spot on the Much Music countdown holding down the #2 spot for the second week in a row.

If you were hoping to make a Backstreet Boy your valentine this week, your chances recently got a bit slimmer.

Two of the Boys are now engaged to be married, as they told MTV News' John Norris on Tuesday night when the group's "Into the Millennium" world tour hit Albany, New York.

"I'm engaged now. I just got engaged over the holiday," Backstreet's Kevin Richardson told MTV News before taking the stage at Albany's Pepsi Arena. "[We've been together] seven years, off and on. We've been through a lot together, but she knew me when I was a Ninja Turtle. I met her in the cafeteria at Walt Disney World. We were both working there. She was a dancer. She's been on Broadway, done lots of things… being in the business, she definitely has an appreciation for it. I mean, I'm not necessarily gonna say that you need somebody in the business, but you need somebody that can understand a lot." [RealVideo]

Brian
Littrell
RealVideo
After Kevin's bombshell, Backstreet's Brian Littrell delivered similar news during an interview later that same day. "There's a right time for everything, I guess," Brian told MTV News of why he's planning a trip to the altar. "It's kind of like the jumpstart on getting on with life, so I'm looking forward to it." [RealVideo]

The now-engaged Brian and Kevin are cousins, making the impending wave of nuptials a true family affair. Richardson said that Littrell has set a date for his ceremony, but Brian wouldn't disclose his plans.
The partially betrothed Backstreet Boys will be in Charlotte on Thursday and Raleigh on Friday. The Boys will also have their eyes on Los Angeles next Wednesday when this year's Grammy Awards are handed out. The group is up for four Grammy awards, including Album Of The Year for "Millennium."

MTV News will be on hand at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards on February 23 providing complete coverage. The action starts on-air next Wednesday at 7 p.m. with MTV News' "Backstage At The Grammys" and continues throughout the night online, where we will be providing coverage and giving you the chance to share your thoughts on the proceedings as well.

David Cassidy
NBC recently aired a Sunday Night Movie special, entitled, The David Cassidy Story, about the singer himself on his rise to fame, and sudden fall. So what, people have asked, does the multi-talented Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync have do with it? Everything. From the teenybopper scene to the sold out tours. Cassidy agreed to let people into his life because he felt as if right now was the right time for fans all over the world to see what life inside a teen idol musician was like. "With all these boy-bands creating a frenzy in the music scene, everyone of them can relate to my life in one way or the other. Fans don't get a chance to understand beyond the music and the touring, everything is kept privately. Instead of using their life, I've used my own, so I'm actually doing them a favor (laughs). The Backstreet Boys and other teen idols do have lives. They are people with real problems on every day things in life such as love, family, and more," explained Cassidy, "I just hope I could help the viewers and fans of the teen idols today realize just that."

THE Backstreet Boys are again suing the svengali who created the band in 1993 and made them all millionaires. Louis J. Pearlman once reportedly kept more than 50 percent of the group's profits. But the phenomenally successful "boy band" has sued Pearlman five times, resulting in three settlementss. And now, Los Angeles Daily Journal columnist Ross Johnson reports, the band has hired top entertainment lawyer Marty Singer to sue them again. Singer -- who has repped the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone -- filed Dec. 1 with the Califormia Labor Commission accusing Pearlman of repeatedly violating the California Talent Agencies Act by functioning as both the group's manager and its unlicensed talent agent.

Singer wants all contracts and agreements between the Boys and Pearlman declared null and void, and he wants all the millions Pearlman has earned off the band returned, going back to when they first signed with his Florida-based Transcontinental Records in 1993. Pearlman's lawyer, Michael Friedman, called the Boys' latest legal action "a desperate attempt to renegotiate settlement agreements that they signed. Lou Pearlman honors these agreements, and so should the Boys." The group N' Sync, which Pearlman also used to manage, recently settled a $150 million suit with him.

If you don't know A.J., Howie, Nick, Kevin and Brian by heart now, you probably will come March 5.

That's when the heartthrobs better known as the Backstreet Boys visit Austin's Erwin Center. Expectations are high for the event to produce the sort of teeny-bopper concert craze so far absent from this city, as steady-touring acts such as Ricky Martin, 'NSync and Britney Spears have yet to perform here.

"We think the Backstreet Boys will go over well in Austin as they have in the rest of the country, which has been phenomenally well," said John Graham, director of the Erwin Center. "But we hope it isn't just teens. We hope moms and dads can get in on the fun, too."

Part of that fun for mom and dad will include paying $37.50 or $45 for tickets. Graham said those prices reflect the high production values of the show, which includes a stunt where the Boys ride airborne surfboards above the crowd.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Jan. 15 at UTTM outlets (477-6060).

Schizophrenic. That's the only word which comes close to labeling what pop music has been in the 1990s. Music this decade reached new heights of diversity, and keeping up with some of the myriad genres -- hip-hop, trip-hop, indie rock, rap 'n' rock, emo-core, electronica, etc. -- kept even the most adept music fan on his or her toes.

Here's a list of 99 songs fit for a monster mix tape reflecting the 1990s' anything-goes approach to pop. You'll find everything from teeny-bopper titans to torchy love ballads, torrential guitar rock and a whole lot in between. The tunes aren't listed in any particular order, but illustrate some songs that helped to define the decade's wide-open musical landscape.

The Unavoidable

1. "My Heart Will Go On," Celine Dion
2. "Livin' La Vida Loca," Ricky Martin
3. "Candle in the Wind 1997," Elton John
4. "I Want It That Way," Backstreet Boys
5. "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus
6. "I Will Always Love You," Whitney Houston
7. "Friends in Low Places," Garth Brooks
8. "Tearin' Up My Heart," 'N Sync
9. "You're Still the One," Shania Twain
10. "The Sign," Ace of Base
11. "MMMBop," Hanson
12. "You Oughta Know," Alanis Morrissette
13. "U Can't Touch This," M.C. Hammer
14. "Loser," Beck

BackstreetBoys.Com has a slightly new look. The news is shifted over to the right side. Also, there is a new feature called Millennium TV produced by ArtistDirect, which will be presented each week. The first Millennium TV is Behind the Scenes at the Billboard Music Awards with TC, the host. The 4 and half minute video is mostly focused on AJ and his style in clothes. It includes interviews with their stylist. It shows them leaving for the Billboard Awards. There are some clips of Howie trying on this clothes. Then they shoot them coming down the hall in the hotel. You see Pollyanna, Amanda, Denise McLean, and Howie's brother. You gotta see what Kevin does with his coat - he acts like superman. Then they show them pulling into the arena for the awards. It ends with listing all the things they won at the awards.

Also, they mention on the site that the video director for Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely is Stewart Gosling, a new director.

Are you dance-impaired? Envious of those nubile folks on MTV's "Global Groove?" Well, salvation is about to hit your local video store.

On sale this week is "Go Fatima," an instructional videotape by pop choreographer Fatima, who has provided cool (or at least non-embarrassing) moves for stars ranging from Will Smith to the Backstreet Boys to singer Aaliyah.

Now you, too, can learn to recreate the steps from such clips as BSB's "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody." (Horror-show makeup and bird of prey not included, of course.)

"Go Fatima" arrives in stores on November 30.

Every silver lining has a cloud... just ask Kevin Richardson.

The eldest Backstreet Boy was recently named "Sexiest Pop Star" by "People" magazine. However, a snowboarding accident may have made the celebration a brief one.

Richardson dislocated his shoulder while snowboarding when the Boys' tour enjoyed an off day in Denver just over a week ago. In addition to being appropriately dreamy, Richardson is also apparently rather rugged as well, as he made the group's Denver show on October 31 and has not missed a gig as a result of the accident.

"People" magazine's "Sexiest People" issue is on stands now, while Kevin and the rest of the Boys are still on the road.

In a recent interview with the MTV Radio Network, Mandy Moore talked about the differences she saw firsthand between 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, most of which have to do with the disparities between the two boy bands' fans.

"There are differences," Moore said of 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. "They are two different groups, and they're both so talented, and they're great entertainers. They sell out shows. They have such dedicated fans. But to me, being on both tours, I really see a difference in the audience."

"And on Backstreet," Moore said,"there's five-year-olds, there's ten-year-olds, there's 15-year-olds, there's 25-year-olds. There's adults, there's dads, there's moms, there's cousins, there's boyfriends. Everybody's there. I think it's a more mixed group. And in a way, it's much better for me, because I think my music reaches people it wouldn't have reached if I were on tour with somebody else."
