Texas Instrument's Speak and Spell released June of 1978
Featuring "state of the art" mono sound from it's TMS5110 speech chip, "high resolution" Vacuum Flourescent Display, built-in keyboard, powered by 4 C batteries that lasted over a month with frequent use (from what I can remember), and retailing at $50. The Simulator for Windows can be found at
sass.retrogames.com. Although not exactly A Laptop, PDA, Palmtop, or PocketPC, it was very portable computing!
