Kids Enjoy Entertainment Now, or KEEN, is a nonprofit origination that provides 1 on 1 interaction with mentally or physically disabled kids and volunteers called coaches. Established in Oxford, England by Elliott Portnoy in 1988, and has the locations found on this map.
KEEN gives many parents time to themselves, and the coaches also learn and grow from the experiences, which they wouldn't have had without volunteering.
I know of these oppertunities because I am a coach not only that, I'm on the left in the picture above. KEEN is held in my school's gym about every other Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:15pm, for two one hour sessions. It is just heartwarming to see the smiles on the faces of these kids, it is hard to articulate, but knowing I am helping the parents out and having fun even though it is volunteer work, it is the most enjoyable part of my Sunday, and, if it is possible with what ever schedule you have, and you live in St. Louis, come on over, KEEN is always looking for new coaches, you don't have to go every time, if something comes up with your busy schedule.
