The Mission: Fr. Gabriel as a person of faith

Fr. Gabriel in "The Mission" is a very firm character who stays true to his beliefs and is a great demonstration of a person of faith. He is a jesuit priest who chooses to go and stay with the Guaranine people in the recently discovered Americas even though they had just recently killed a priest who went there. He establishes two missions there and his work prevents the native people from being taken into slavery by the Portugese people. He tries to convince Altamirano to not allow for the mission lands to be turned over to the Portugese. When he eventually does lose the battle for the land, he chooses to stay with the Guaranine people until the very end. And unlike the other priests around him, he decides not to fight and continue to preach the message of God's peace to the world, even all the way up to his tragic death. Fr. Gabriel's whole life, from beginning the missions to peacefully resisting the Portugese invasion, was one big example of faith.

The whole experience of Fr. Gabriel with the Guaranine tested his faith numerous times, and through this we gain the knowledge about what it takes to be a true man for others and person of God. It took tremendous faith to go up into the forest-covered mountains of the Guaranine and attempt to bring them to Christ, but Fr. Gabriel did it knowing the risks involved. This is the mindset we should all take on during our lives as we live out Christ's message, because we know it wont be the popular thing and we may get made fun of, but it is the right thing. The way in which Fr. Gabriel reacts to the knowledge of the incoming Portugese invasion with peace and not violence while the others around him prepared for war, shows a direct parallel to Jesus Christ. He put all his trust in God to know what is right for him. He did this lovingly showing that faith is a loving trust. If we all could live our lives as he did, our world would not have war and we would be at peace with all other nations. Fr. Gabriel gave us a more modern example of what it is like to be a person of faith and live the way Jesus set it out for you. I learned from him that being a person of faith requires courage, trust and most of all, love.
