Existence of God

In section seven we are presented with several teleological arguments for the existence of God. Teleology is the use of logical arguments to prove that the universe was purposefully created. They were all offered by respected men of history and as such had a very profound impact on my belief in the existence of God. The ones that had a main impact on me were William Paley's argument of the Watch and the Watchmaker, theAnthropic Principle, and the argument of Degrees of Perfection from Aquinas.

Paley's Argument states that just as a watch was purposefully created so that all the pieces fit together perfectly to achieve the same end, so it seems that the universe was also built in the same way. And even though the human body is more complex than a watch, it works in perfect harmony. This shows that there must be a "watchmaker" or greater being who created the human race to work perfectly.

The Anthropic Principle says that there are just way to many chances that could conclude to the existence of human beings that there must be a greater being. The odds of the universe existing with intelligent life by accident are slim. But intelligent life does exist in the universe, therefore the uiniverse was deliberately and purposefully formed.

Lastly the argument from degrees of perfection states that when we imply that something is better than another, we prove the existence of a being which has a quality to perfection. Things exist in a manner of due succesion that ultimately leads to a being that is infinitely intelligent and free.

All three of these arguments seem very fair and valid to me. They all put into words what I have thought before but never knew why or how. Now whenever someone tries to debate with me on the existence of God, I have several solid referances to refer to. Also now i am able to solidly state that I believe in the existance of a all-powerful, infinantly being God. I am no longer on the fence about it. These arguments are so persuasive that I think that they would challenge even a devout atheist to rethink his beliefs. In conclusion, I am significantly happy to have read these arguments and am glad to be able to use them in my everyday life.
