Wonder and Awe Paper

This past weekend I went on a Junior/Senior Retreat through Incarnate Word Youth Ministry and on Saturday night, we were outside, in the freezing cold weather, under the stars just looking at God’s creation. “…God made two great lights; the sun to rule by day and the moon to rule by night. He also made the stars…” –Genesis 1, 2

We were in the middle of nowhere out in this big open field and we were just sitting there, looking up at an incredible amount of stars. Feeling God’s presence among us, with music in the background, we were praying, whatever, whenever, as loud as we wanted, to God. You would just go out in the middle of the field and yell to God. It was unbelievable because after a while, you could truly feel God’s presence. An awesome experience, this was one of the first for me where, in revealing God to me, that nature was involved so much. I was just truly amazed at how beautiful God’s creation really was. I mean, those stars that night inspired me, spoke to me, and made me feel happy. It created a sense of joy and happiness inside of me. They even provoked questions like “How in the world did God create the stars?” or “What was he thinking when he created the stars?” and this was just neat to know, that God’s creation, so beautiful and taken for granted, was a mystery.

That night, something so simple and easy, was so beautiful to me. It was incredible, in every way, because it showed me God in even the simplest of things and in something I’ve overlooked every time I’m outside at night. Thus proving that God can reveal himself to us anywhere he wants and with (in this case, the stars) anything he wants. That night, God’s presence was very well felt and it wasn’t in a chapel, or at mass, but in that uncountable amount of stars and God’s pure beauty and glory.
