reaches Final to end Season on a high note. October 31st 2004 Elena reached her third Singles Final of the year in her last tournament of the year, the Generali Open, Linz, Austria, to end her 2004 season on a high point, in a year full of ups and downs. She finishes the year with a best-ever Rank of World Number 15. Elena beat fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, 6-3 4-6 7-6, to reach the Final, in which she lost to World No 2 Amelie Maueresmo of France 2-6 0-6. ~ Elena
Loses to Dementieva in Hasselt Final October 3rd 2004 Home favourite and former World No 1, Kim Clijsters fell to Elena Bovina in the Semi-Final of the Tier 3 Title in the Belgian town of Hasselt. Cup Elena Bovina defeated Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Tier 1 Kemlin Cup Tournament in Moscow with a crushing 6-2, 6-3 victory. Luxemburg ~ Elena Takes New Haven Title! Aug 28th 2004 Elena has taken her third career title, the Pilot Pen, New Haven Championship beating doubles partner Nathalie Dechy of France in 100 degree heat to win the Final 6-2 2-6 7-5. On her way to the Tier Two title win, she defeated, Mashona Washington of the USA 6-2 6-3 in the Quarter Final, and was too strong for World No 6, Elena Dementieva of Russia, crushing her 6-1 6-1 in the Semi-Final. Elena's big serve was working well, and allowed her to dominate in all her matches this week, and she was rarely broken, seeming always able to produce aces or service winners on vital points. Elena defeated Denisa Chladkova in the 1st round with a 6-0, 7-5 victory. She fought off a late resurgence by the Czech with some solid winners. "To tell the truth, I never thought one time that I could win the tournament," she said. "It's not that I didn't believe in myself, it's just I was so kind of playing every day, day after day, match after match, that I never even thought myself getting to the finals. It was not really about who was stronger, it was just about who was stronger mentally, who wanted to win more." ~ Elena
Reaches 3rd Round Aug 8th 2004 Elena reached the 3rd Round of the Tier 1 Rogers Canadian Open in Montreal, with wins over Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-1 6-3, and Lisa Osterloh of the USA 7-6 6-4. She lost to top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France, 2-6 6-3 2-6 in the 3rd Round. ~ Acura
Classic San Diego: Aug 1st 2004 After a convincing 6-1 6-4 win over Eleni Danilidou of Greece, Elena reached the 3rd Round of this Tier 1 Tournament in California. She has already beaten Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-3 3-6 6-4 in the First Round. Elena was defeated in the 3rd Round 6-4 6-2 by Serena Williams. ~ Elena Withdraws from Wimbledon 22nd June 2004 After a convincing First Round win over Edina Gallovits of Romania, Elena sadly had to retire from the championships at Wimbledon with an abdominal strain. She would have met Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the 2nd Round. Hantuchova now gets a bye into the 3rd Round. ~ Eastbourne: Elena defeated No 5 seed Silvia Farina Elia at the Hastings Direct International Championships in Eastbourne. The Italian player fell in straight sets, 7-5 6-0. However Elena then lost in 3 sets to Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 4-6 6-1 2-6. ~ French
Open: 30th May 2004 Elena fought a hard, see-saw match in her third round confrontation with Jennifer Capriati of the USA in Paris. After losing the 1st set, 3-6, Elena upped her game with some superb serving and blistering returns, and ran away to a 5-0 lead in the 2nd set before taking it 6-3 Jennifer Capriati came back in a hard-fought final set, until Elena levelled at 3-3, but was always playing catch-up until Capriati finally managed to break and take the match 3-6 6-3 4-6 Elena moved into the third round of the French Open tournament by overcoming rising German newcomer Anna Lena Groenefeld, who was forced to retire after only 5 games. Elena was leading 3-2 when the retirement occurred. In the first round of the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament, on Tuesday, Elena defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy 7-5 6-1 in 70 minutes. 6-1before losing ~ Elena Top Seed in Estoril 18th April 2004 Elena returns to the tour this week as No 1 Seed at the Estoril Tournament in Portugal, where she was runner-up in 2001. Elena has been off the tour for two months with a foot injury. She beat Iva Majoli 6-4 6-2 but lost in the 2nd Round to Marta Marrero of Spain. 7-6(6) 4-6 3-6 ~ Paris
Indoor Open: 13th February 2004 Elena defeated tournament 4th seed, Jelena Dokic of Serbia, in the Gaz de France Paris Indoor Open tournament, to reach the Quarter Final . Elena lost the 1st set, 4-6 before fighting back in a 2nd set in which each player held serve only once, to take the set 7-6(5) in the tie break. However Elena swept to victory 6-0 in the final set. More photographs here. She had earlier beaten Anabel Medina Garriguez of Spain 4-6 6-2 6-4 in the first round. Unfortunately Elena lost on Friday to veteran, Mary Pierce of France 3-6 4-6 in the Quarter Final. ~ Australian Open Elena takes Mixed Doubles Title! 1st February 2004 Elena, and partner Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, have won the Australian Open Mixed Doubles Tournament beating the experienced team of Leander Paes and Martina Navratilova, 6-1 7-6(4) in the Final. This gives Elena her first ever Grand Slam Title in 2004!
Elena and Nenad defeated M Rodriguez and Rita Grande 6-3 7-6(3) in the Semi Final, and Fifth seeded Kevin Ullyett and Lisa Raymond 6-2 6-4 in the Quarter Final. Singles Elena lost to Claudine Schaul of Luxemburg in the second round of the Singles at the Australian Open, 4-6 3-6. Elena served poorly and made only 11 winners, compared to 26 unforced errors. ~ Adidas International, Sydney 14th January 2004 Elena, in her first tournament of the new season, the Adidas International in Sydney, Australia, defeated Magui Serna of Spain 6-4 6-1 in the first round. However Elena then lost to fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in the 2nd Round, the score was 2-6 3-6. In DOUBLES Elena partnered Conchita Martinez of Spain. The pairing beat Elena Dementieva and Lina Krasnoroutskaya in the first round, 1-6 6-2 7-5; and then reached the quarter final with a victory over No 4. seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Magdalena Maleeva, 6-2 3-6 6-3. However they were defeated 2-6 3-6 in the Semi Final by Meghann Shaughnessy and Dinara Safina. |
