A special Thanks you to Robert Neech for finding the Mansfield site for Washington Aerospace and all the other Rocketeers!!!!
Mansfield flight report We all got up early this morning at 5:00 and of course it was typical Seattle weather, rain. Bill Munds showed up at 6:00 and we left for Mansfield. We had all kinds of weather on the way there. It rained on us hard till we hit the summit of Stevens Pass then it was snowing, and a few miles on the other side of the pass it was blue skies. We stopped in Wenatchee to meet up with Jim Pommert, Jim Wilkerson & Nicholas and Scott Bowers at Denny's. We had breakfast then headed out to Mansfield. It took about an hour to get there and when we got there we were met by the Mayor of Mansfield (I believe his name was Tom and I don't remember his last name), Kent Newman, Bill Clugston and Jerry Buckles (SPARC representative). Tom and the town were very welcoming and glad to see the rocket community coming to Mansfield. We drove around looking at some sites; at one of the places we needed some kind of breathing equipment and a car wash. I think it was more dusty then Brothers. We circled around and came back in town and headed out of town to the town's old snowmobile race track and the town's gun range. We drove around to the back side of the track and found a nice place to set up the pads just over a little hill and nice big recovery fields. We were getting the pads set up and I had my son's rocket loaded up the night before. A 4 inch Diablo with a 38mm high G 2 grain sorb/ti that Brett Philips made and sent me. I slid it on the rail and Kent was hooking up the igniter wire leads to the box. Kent dropped the leads in the box and some how they touched the charges leads (what are the odds of that?) and the next thing we know it was duck and cover time; we had titanium flakes raining down on us. Kent was closer to it then I was I was just getting ready to turn on the Camcorder to take a picture of it when it went and we both turned and ducked every one who got to see it said it was a nice sparky motor we couldn't tell you how it looked going up but we can tell you it did rain sparks. But no one got hurt :-) and the first motor was fired in Mansfield. I should have written down what all the people flew but we didn't so I am going on memory. Bill Munds flew his 2 stage Fat Boy. It was a nice flight, all 6 motors lit (3 on each stage) D12-0 in the booster and D12-5 in the sustainer motors. Bill lost his nose cone again but he didn't lose his chute this time! Bill he is going to use 1/4 Kevlar shock cord next time he said. The 3 D's is a lot of ejection charge for the Fat boy Bill Clugston had some great flights also. 4 E9-6s in a LOC Viper and a F50-9T in an AeroTech Cheetah. One of the E's catoed. Bill said this was his first Cato Kent Newman I will add his flights when I find out John, Shara and Paul Hawkins flew a 4 inch Diablo on a 2 grain sorb/ti high G great flight I heard; John flew his RDS Quasar on one of Scott's 54 mm K800 motors to an altitude of 4591 feet for the altitude record for Mansfield (for now) and also flew my 3 inch scratch built Amraam Ice Cold on one of Scott's 38 mm J1000 motors. It went up nice & straight, the drogue fired at apogee but the main didn't fire. I tested the battery before the flight and it was at 9.71 volts but when we got up to the rocket the battery was dead. Strange, I disarmed it and took it apart and changed the battery and it powered right up so I'm not sure what happened. But it beeped out an altitude of 4511. The Fin Can will need work but it will be fixed. Jim Wilkerson flew his Screaming for Vengeance - 6" diameter, 9.5 ft tall, 25 lb launch wt. Aero Tech K1100 to 1900 feet. The electronics on board was ARTS and Perfectflite. Later, he flew his Hell Bent for Leather II - 7.5" diameter, 11 ft tall, 60 lb launch weight- 75mm EX M2700 - 4000 feet alt. The electronics was ARTS and Perfectflite. He had to chase it a little ways and if there is a water source around Jim will try to find it. It landed about 20 yards from a pond. He had an altitude of 4100 feet on the M2900 that Scott Bowers made. Scott Bower's has built some really nice EX motors Thanks Scott!!! Thanks Brett Philips for the EX 2 grain sorb/ti high G A special Thanks to Robert Neech for finding the Mansfield site for Washington Aerospace
