& Rick Springfield The True Untold Story! |

They said it was a forbidden fruit, but early in his career, young Rick Springfield met the woman who, for the most formative years of his life would come to be known as his "Sugar Mama" , Betty Crocker. While Rick had known of Betty for many years in his native Australia , it was only after his arrival in America that he was finally able to meet this mysterious and alluring American Icon and what followed was a recipe for romance that was truly bittersweet. |
Introduced at a Hollywood dinner party by mutual friend, Poppin' Fresh, Rick and Betty immediately sensed that they blended well as a couple. Accepting an invitation to her posh Beverly Hills Eatery, Rick would later recall to close friends she truly fulfilled that age old promise that "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach". From the outset of their affair however, critics charged that while Rick was caught up in her "Sweetness", Betty only loved him for his buns! This would sadly foreshadow what was to come. | ![]()

As their romance simmered throughout spring of that year Rick, now struggling to launch his fledgling singing career, openly complained to his "Sweetie" that he felt uncomfortable accepting her as being his "Bread and Butter". It was at that time that Betty began sending her young Aussie boyfriend what would come to be known as "Betty's Helpful Hints". In retrospect it was clear the all of the ingredients for disaster were already brewing beneath the surface. |
Tension began to erupt into a slow boil between them as Betty, now openly competing with the younger Springfield for the media's attention underwent the 1st of many ill fated Hollywood Makeovers. What had once been a fairytale romance now mixed like oil and vinegar, with Betty doing more and more "cheesecake", much to Rick's chagrin. | ![]() |

Now their relationship had come to a crucible and Betty could no longer keep her sour grapes a secret. With the introduction of her "Hamburger Helper" and his growing commitment to vegetarianism the stresses on their relationship grew. She was unrelenting in her Schvengali like control over Springfield, and her loving "Helpful Hints" took on an scorching tone that foreshadowed things to come. Rick now realized that too many cooks only spoiled the broth, and in the summer of that year cut the wheat from the chaff and told Betty that their affair had ended. |
To no ones surprise the public was the last to know about the breakup. It was not until Rick refused to appear in Betty's latest project that the general public had any hint that the sweet had turned to sour. Years later Rick would recall the incident to his CoStar Brook Shields and mused about an odd feeling of Deja Vu when he appeared on her weekly Sitcom. | ![]() |

As the years past both Rick and Betty grew beyond their ill fated romance, yet each yearned to put some closure on their love. It was Betty, who many years later would finally mend the breach between them when she sent Rick one final "Helpful Hint" that signaled she was ready to serve the final course in what had been unappetizing part of both of their lives. Rick too expressed the need to put the icing on the cake of their love and in act of reconciliation would agree to immortalize Betty in a History Channel Special. |
