Gen., commanded Reserve Corps at Shiloh, Baton Rouge, commanded 1st Divn/Hardee's Corps at Murfreesboro, Jackson, commanded Breckenridge's Divn/Hill's Corps at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, commanded Dept of Southwest Tennessee, commanded Confederate forces at New Market, commanded a division at Cold Harbor, Early's Washington raid, Shenandoah campaign, February 1865 Secretary of War.
Post War Career Exile in Cuba, returned to US, lawyer.
