Gen. in Confederate Provisional Army, Fort Sumter, First Manassas, July 1861 General, Shiloh - commanded Army of Tennessee after A S Johnston killed, Corinth, superseded by Bragg while on sick leave, defence of Sout h Carolina and Georgia, commanded defences south of Richmond, second in command to Johnston in Carolinas campaign.
Post War Career Railroad president, lottery supervisor, politician.
