06/10/88 Berkeley, California ("San Francisco Bay Blues") : A- (B+/A-)
This show contains two live debuts (Rank Strangers To Me and Everybody's Movin'). It also has the first San Francisco Bay Blues since '61, and it's done very well. Neil Young adds his guitar to the music for six of the songs. The acoustic songs are all highlights, and Gates Of Eden is excellent. Unfortunately, Watching The River Flow has a few dropouts in it, Masters Of War is clipped in the middle, and Maggie's Farm is from a different source from the rest of the concert (and this source has worse quality), but these are all from the original bootleg. Other than that, this is a great bootleg to have. Bob gives a great performance.
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. Joey
3. Absolutely Sweet Marie
4. Watching The River Flow - a few dropouts (this is on original?)
5. Tangled Up In Blue
6. Masters Of War - clipped in middle and then the volume gets quieter (this is on original)
7. San Francisco Bay Blues (acoustic) - written by Jesse Fuller
8. Boots Of Spanish Leather (acoustic)
Disc 2:
1. The Lakes Of Pontchartrain (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional)
2. The Times They Are A-Changin' (acoustic)
3. It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (Bob on harp) (with Neil Young)
4. In The Garden (with Neil Young)
5. Gates Of Eden (with Neil Young)

encore:
7. Rank Strangers To Me (acoustic) (live debut of this song from Down In The Groove) - written by Albert E. Brumley
8. Everybody's Movin' (with Neil Young) (live debut of this song) - written by Glen Trout
9. Maggie's Farm (with Neil Young) - different source from rest of concert with worse quality (this is on original)
06/30/88 Jones Beach, New York ("Blown Out On The Trail") : A (A/A)
This is one of the '88 shows in which Bob really sort of yells out the lyrics. It's also considered one of the better shows of '88 by some. The highlights for me are: You're A Big Girl Now and Masters Of War. The '88 version of Boots Of Spanish Leather usually blows me away, and this one's no exception. The rest of the show's very good as well - it's very rockin'. This is the first Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues of the Never Ending Tour. The filler is great. From the Bridge Benefit show in '88 comes the first Pretty Boy Floyd since '61. It's also the only performance of the song during the Never Ending Tour. The With God On Our Side has the Vietnam verse in it. The filler's all pretty good.
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
3. You're A Big Girl Now
4. Tangled Up In Blue
5. Masters Of War
6. I Shall Be Released
7. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
8. The Lakes Of Pontchartrain (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional)
9. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (acoustic)
10. Eileen Aroon (acoustic) - written by Gerald Griffin from the Gaelic Of Carrol O'Daly
11. Boots Of Spanish Leather (acoustic)
12. Silvio
13. Gates Of Eden
14. Like A Rolling Stone
Disc 2:
encore:
1. The Times They Are A-Changin' (acoustic)
2. All Along The Watchtower
3. Maggie's Farm

4. San Francisco Bay Blues (acoustic) - written by Jesse Fuller
5. Pretty Boy Floyd (acoustic) - written by Woody Guthrie
6. With God On Our Side (acoustic)
7. Girl From The North Country (acoustic)
8. Gates Of Eden (acoustic) - slight dropout at end
9. Forever Young (acoustic)
10. I'll Remember You
11. Every Grain Of Sand
12. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (acoustic)
13. One Too Many Mornings (acoustic)
14. Barbara Allen (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional)
- Tracks 4-9 are from 12/04/88 Bridge Beneeffit, Oakland, California
- Tracks 10-14 are from 08/31/88 Syracuse,, New York
07/08/88 Montreal, Quebec : B (B+/B)
There are gaps of silence between tracks 7 and 8, and between tracks 8 and 9. The show's not a bad show, but it's not really great. What makes it great and worthwhile for someone like me is that it includes the live debut of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and this also happens to be one of the two times ever that Bob performed this song. The acoustic set is pretty good.
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. I Shall Be Released
3. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
4. Hallelujah (live debut of this song) - written by Leonard Cohen
5. Ballad Of A Thin Man
6. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
7. The Lakes Of Pontchartrain (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional)
8. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (acoustic)
9. Boots Of Spanish Leather (acoustic)
10. Tangled Up In Blue
11. In The Garden
12. Like A Rolling Stone
encore:
13. It Ain't Me, Babe (acoustic)
14. All Along The Watchtower
08/04/88 Los Angeles, California (I) : B+ (B/A-)
Bob Dylan has only played Hallelujah (by Leonard Cohen) twice and this is the second time he performed it. This is the live debut and only time Bob's ever performed I'm Glad I Got To See You Once Again by Hank Snow...and what a lovely song it is. This show has the first electric Knockin' On Heaven's Door in the Never-Ending Tour. Comparing this bootleg to the other one I have of the same show (both are from different sources), this one is more focused on the bass and sounds more 'closed'. If you want to trade for it, please identify it for me by calling it "08/04/88 Los Angeles, California (I)". Notice that this bootleg has 2 CD's whereas the other one is only 1 CD.
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. Hallelujah - written by Leonard Cohen
3. Masters Of War - very small dropout at one point
4. Driftin' Too Far From Shore
5. You're A Big Girl Now
6. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
7. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (acoustic)
8. The Lakes Of Pontchartrain (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional) - small gap between this and next
9. It Ain't Me, Babe (acoustic)
10. I'm Glad I Got To See You Once Again (acoustic) (live debut of this song) - written by Hank Snow
Disc 2:
1. Mr. Tambourine Man (acoustic)
2. Silvio
3. In The Garden
4. Like A Rolling Stone
encore:
5. Barbara Allen (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional)
6. Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic)
7. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (sung with Mike Peters and his[?] band) (Bob[?] on harp)

Like A Rolling Stone has a track division in the middle of it for some reason (you can't tell if you're listening to it, but tracks 14 and 15 are both the same Like A Rolling Stone). Comparing this bootleg to the other one I have of the same show (both are from different sources), this one is more focused on the treble and sounds more 'open'. If you want to trade for it, please identify it for me by calling it "08/04/88 Los Angeles, California (II)". Notice that this bootleg is only 1 CD whereas the other one has 2 CD's.

08/20/88 George, Washington : A- (B+/A-)
There are gaps of silence between tracks 8 and 9, and between tracks 9 and 10. This is a very good concert. The acoustic set is unbelievably good, especially the awesome Trail Of The Buffalo. In It Ain't Me Babe, Bob apparently breaks a string on his guitar and his handed another one (or so I was told by someone who was at the show). All in all, this show is recommended if you like '88.
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. Absolutely Sweet Marie
3. All Along The Watchtower
4. You're A Big Girl Now
5. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
6. Masters Of War
7. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (acoustic)
8. Mr. Tambourine Man (acoustic)
9. a few seconds of crowd and guitar noises - gap at end
10. Trail Of The Buffalo (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional - arranged by Woody Guthrie)
11. It Ain't Me, Babe (acoustic) - Bob stops song after the first verse for a while, but then continues (he broke a string on his guitar and was then handed another one)
12. I Shall Be Released
13. Silvio
14. Like A Rolling Stone
encore:
15. Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic)
16. Maggie's Farm
08/21/88 Vancouver, British Columbia : B+ (B/B+)
The mixing is pretty bad in track 1, but it's better by track 2. On track 9, there's a 'waving' hiss in the background (and it sort of continues on through track 10). The first track of disc 2 is just the crowd cheering for Bob (for 4:29). There are several gaps in this track. There is a also a short (half-second or so) gap in Knockin' On Heaven's Door. The acoustic part of this show is absolutely awesome! The Boots Of Spanish Leather is the show's highlight. All Along The Watchtower is very well done as well. Knockin' On Heaven's Door, in duet with Tracy Chapman, is nicely done. Before The Times They Are A-Changin', a guitar plays Oh Suzanna!
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. I'll Remember You
3. Masters Of War
4. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
5. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
6. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
7. Boots Of Spanish Leather (acoustic)
8. The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (acoustic)
9. One Too Many Mornings (acoustic)
10. Barbara Allen (acoustic) - written by unknown (traditional)
11. Silvio
12. In The Garden
13. Like A Rolling Stone
Disc 2:
1. crowd noises - occasional gaps in the crowd noise
encore:
2. The Times They Are A-Changin' (acoustic) - Oh Suzanna is played on guitar before this song starts!
3. All Along The Watchtower
4. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (sung with Tracy Chapman) - half-second gap in this song
10/13/88 Upper Darby, Pennsylvania : B+ (A-/B+)
Dylan uses a yelling voice almost for the electric set, which I think can be pretty cool; it can be very rockin' and is very energetic. The acoustic sets, however, are something completely different! Bob's voice becomes less of a yell; the acoustic sets are the highlights (especially the first one). Not only does this show contain the live debut of Bob Dylan's 115th Dream, but it also has the first With God On Our Side that has the Vietnam verse in it.
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. Absolutely Sweet Marie
3. Masters Of War
4. You're A Big Girl Now
5. Shelter From The Storm
6. Bob Dylan's 115th Dream (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar) (live debut of this song from Bringing It All Back Home)
7. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)

8. All Along The Watchtower
9. Maggie's Farm
10. Every Grain Of Sand
10/19/88 New York, NY ("Stuck Inside Of New York") : A (A/A-)
This show was the last full show from '88. It's a very good show throughout. There aren't any real highlights...the whole show is just great. The sound quality is also wonderful. Near the end of the show, Bob's voice is getting a bit raspy. The Lonesome Death flows into Knockin' On Heaven's Door, which then becomes electric. Unfortunately, this bootleg is missing the last two songs from the 10/19/88 show: All Along The Watchtower and Maggie's Farm.
Disc 1:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2. I'll Remember You
3. John Brown
4. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
5. Simple Twist Of Fate
6. Bob Dylan's 115th Dream
7. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
8. Gates Of Eden (acoustic)
9. With God On Our Side (acoustic) - edit from 1st verse to 5th verse (this is on original)

8. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (acoustic --> electric)
filler:
9. Maggie's Farm
10. It Ain't Me, Babe (acoustic)
11. Masters Of War
- Tracks 9-11 are from 09/04/88 Bristol, CConnecticut
06/07/89 Birmingham, UK ("No Photographs Please") : B (B-/B)
I didn't find this show to be all that good. The first real highlights for me were in the encores: One Too Many Mornings, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, and Congratulations. Dylan's only played Congratulations three times in the Never Ending Tour, so this is fairly rare.
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues - only the ending of the song is here (no words, just the final instrumental part) (this is on original)
2. Lonesome Town (Bob on harp) - written by Ricky Nelson
3. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
4. You're A Big Girl Now (Bob on harp)
5. John Brown
6. All Along The Watchtower (Bob on harp)
7. Barbara Allen (acoustic) (Bob on harp) - written by unknown (traditional) - static glitch at 2:47
8. Girl From The North Country (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
9. Mr. Tambourine Man (acoustic) (Bob on harp) - 5 sec or so gap at end
10. Silvio - volume changes often and suddenly near start

encore:
13. Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
14. One Too Many Mornings (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
15. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (acoustic --> electric) (Bob on harp)
16. Congratulations
17. Maggie's Farm
06/10/89 Den Haag, Netherlands ("Hunted (Like A Crocodile)") : A- (A/A-)
The highlights from the songs leading to the acoustic set for me are: Shelter From The Storm and Highway 61 Revisited. The other songs sound like the arrangement is pretty cool, but Bob just doesn't seem to get them to 'click' for me. An acoustic Don't Think Twice nicely flows into an acoustic Knockin' On Heaven's Door, which in turn flows nicely into an electric Knockin' On Heaven's Door. I like the phrasing in I Don't Believe You. Trail Of The Buffalo is played electric for the first time during the Never Ending Tour (it's only played electric twice in total during the Never Ending Tour).
1. Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine
2. Ballad Of Hollis Brown
3. Masters Of War
4. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on harp)
5. Shelter From The Storm (Bob on harp)
6. Highway 61 Revisited (G.E. Smith on electric slide guitar)
7. Mr. Tambourine Man (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
8. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
9. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (acoustic --> electric) (Bob on harp) - gap at end
10. I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met) (Bob on harp)
11. Trail Of The Buffalo - written by Woody Guthrie
12. I Shall Be Released
13. Like A Rolling Stone
encore:
14. To Ramona (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
15. All Along The Watchtower
Deeds Of Mercy : A- (A-/A-)
Deeds Of Mercy contains outtakes from Oh Mercy. This bootleg has tape hiss throughout and there are a few tracks which are high in bass. The Shooting Star's have drastically different lyrics from the officially released version, but Bob unfortunately isn't very upfront in the mix on the first track. The several God Knows also have very different lyrics from the release on Under The Red Sky (and I prefer these outtake versions a hundred times better than the UTRS version!). Actually, a lot of the songs contain different lyrics. I also prefer this Born In Time outtake to the officially released version on UTRS. Ring Them Bells has problems as described below, as does the first of the three Series Of Dreams. Compared to Ring Them Bells (see underneath this review), the sound quality is a bit worse (but by not going through the digital work, it retains some 'warmth'). However, it isn't necessarily better/worse than Deeds Of Mercy as it has What Was It You Wanted? and the three Series Of Dreams. It, however, misses two more Ring Them Bells and it misses a second Political World (all of these are on the Ring Them Bells bootleg). Click here for a review at Monica's Dude's site on Ring Them Bells.
1. Shooting Star - Bob isn't mixed very well into song
2. God Knows
3. God Knows (Bob on harp)

5. Most Of The Time
6. Everything Is Broken
7. Political World
8. Born In Time
9. Dignity
10. Shooting Star
11. Disease Of Conceit
12. Ring Them Bells - most of forth verse is cut out and last verse appears twice
13. Most Of The Time
14. What Was It You Wanted? (Bob on harp)
15. Series Of Dreams - small gap at 0:30
16. Series Of Dreams
17. Series Of Dreams
Ring Them Bells : A- (A/A-)
Ring Them Bells contains outtakes from Oh Mercy. This bootleg has eliminated the tape hiss which was present in Deeds Of Mercy. The Shooting Star's have drastically different lyrics from the officially released version, but Bob unfortunately isn't very upfront in the mix on the first Shooting Star. The several God Knows also have very different lyrics from the release on Under The Red Sky (and I prefer these outtake versions a hundred times better than the UTRS version!). The songs Ring Them Bells have problems as described below (all three versions have problems). Compared to Deeds Of Mercy (see above this review), the sound quality is better (it has gone through some kind of digital work, I believe). However, it isn't necessarily better/worse than Deeds Of Mercy as it misses What Was It You Wanted? and the three Series Of Dreams. It, however, has two more Ring Them Bells than Deeds Of Mercy, and it has an additional Political World. Click here for a review at Monica's Dude's site on Ring Them Bells.
