Bob Dylan & The Dead ('87 Rehearsals) : B+ (A-/B+)
These songs are from Dylan's April rehearsals with the Grateful Dead. Dylan and the Dead then toured in June of '87, and this mini-tour is considered by some (including me) to be a low point in Dylan's career. However, some of the material here is well done or is interesting. Dylan does mess up a lot of the lyrics (like he did on the tour). Keeping in mind that these are rehearsals, many of the songs aren't complete and are works-in-progress.

07/10/87 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ("Men Of Peace") : B- (A/C+)
This was one of the six performances Dylan did with The Grateful Dead. If you don't like Dylan & The Dead, then you probably won't much like this (just as I don't). There are fade-outs and then fade-ins between each track (this is on the original CD). This show contains the live debut of The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest (though it's not very good). This show isn't even quite complete: it's missing Queen Jane Approximately which should have followed Chimes Of Freedom. There are several times in which you can hear some mic feedback.
1. Tangled Up In Blue
2. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
3. Man Of Peace
4. The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest (live debut of this song from John Wesley Harding)
5. John Brown
6. Simple Twist Of Fate
7. Ballad Of A Thin Man
8. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again - dropouts from 0:31-0:32
9. Chimes Of Freedom
10. Gotta Serve Somebody
11. Joey
12. All Along The Watchtower
09/13/87 Torino, Italy : B+ (A/B+)
Bob's voice is, for lack of finding a better adjective, very erratic. Also, he forgets the lyrics often (which disappointed me, especially on Emotionally Yours - one of my favourite songs). The rocking, powerful The Wicked Messenger is well done. The Times They Are A-Changin' is also pretty good, as is I And I (except for the ending, which I can't stand).
1. Positively 4th Street
2. Masters Of War
3. Lenny Bruce (Bob on harp)
4. Gotta Serve Somebody
5. Maggie's Farm
6. John Brown
7. Emotionally Yours
8. The Wicked Messenger
9. I Shall Be Released
10. Heart Of Mine
11. License To Kill (Bob on harp)
12. Shot Of Love

09/15/87 Dortmund, West Germany ("Live in Dortmund 1987") : B (B-/B)
This is the complete concert including the sets by Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, and (of course) Bob Dylan. This bootleg is sourced from a vinyl so there are vinyl-related noises. The sound basically only comes out of the left speaker until the end of track 3, and it moves around throughout. The sets by Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty are interesting to listen to, but the set by Bob just isn't very good. The highlight for me was Shelter From The Storm, and the rest of the concert is just 'ok' (if even).
Disc 1:
1. Don't You Write Her Off (solo acoustic) (sung by Roger McGuinn) - written by Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, and Chris Hillman
2. Tiffany Queen (solo acoustic) (sung by Roger McGuinn) - written by Roger McGuinn
3. Sunshine Love (solo acoustic) (sung by Roger McGuinn) - written by unknown (?)
4. Light Up The Darkness (solo acoustic) (sung by Roger McGuinn) - written by Roger and Camilla McGuinn (?)
5. Chestnut Mare (solo acoustic) (sung by Roger McGuinn) - written by Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy
6. Drug Store Truck Driving Man (sung by Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty) - written by Gram Parsons and Roger McGuinn
7. Mr. Tambourine Man (sung by Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty) - vinyl skip at 0:07
8. Turn, Turn, Turn (sung by Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty) - written by Pete Seeger (?) - gap at end (due to end of side one on vinyl)
9. Eight Miles High (sung by Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty) - written by Roger McGuinn, Clark, and Crosby
10. Round And Around (sung by Tom Petty) - written by unknown (?)
11. American Girl (sung by Tom Petty) - written by Tom Petty
12. Refugee (sung by Tom Petty) - written by Tom Petty
13. Think About Me (sung by Tom Petty) - written by Tom Petty
Disc 2:
1. Goodbye Rich Girl (sung by Tom Petty) - written by unknown (?)

7. Dead Man, Dead Man
encore?:
8. Like A Rolling Stone
9. Forever Young (Bob on harp)
10/07/87 Paris, France : B+ (A-/B)
The House Of The Rising Sun is great, and this was the one time it was performed in '87. Forever Young and Watching The River Flow are both good, but the main highlights are: Don't Think Twice, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, and House Of The Rising Sun. Man Gave Names To All The Animals is pretty terrible, with Bob only singing (if you can call it that - more like mumbling) two verses. This show has some great moments (as most Bob shows do), but I'd definitely recommend "The Final Night And More" (10/17/87 London, England) before this one. "Semi-acoustic" (used below) means that it's Bob with Benmont Tench on piano and Mike Campbell on electric guitar (so they aren't really acoustic). The filler song, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, is here because I acquired this bootleg in a trade which also involved 02/11/86, and the final song from that show wouldn't fit on the second CD, so it's here. Unfortunately, something I learnt by wasting three CD's, is that I can't fully copy this show. I can burn disc 1 all right, but disc 2's tracks 5 and 6 froze my computer and baffled my CD player (i.e. they won't play).
Disc 1:
1. Man Gave Names To All The Animals
2. Like A Rolling Stone
3. Maggie's Farm
4. Forever Young (Bob on harp)
5. Seeing The Real You At Last
6. Watching The River Flow
7. Simple Twist Of Fate
8. John Brown
9. I And I - small gap between this and next
10. Joey
11. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (semi-acoustic)
Disc 2:
1. In The Garden
2. Gotta Serve Somebody - small gap between this and next
3. Tomorrow Is A Long Time (semi-acoustic)
4. House Of The Rising Sun - written by unknown (traditional)
5. Shot Of Love - song incomplete (ends after 0:45 into the track)
filler:
6. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Stevie Nicks on guitar) (sung with Stevie Nicks) (Bob on harp)
- Track 6 is from 02/11/86 Sydney, Australlia
10/10/87 Birmingham, England ("Wild Cathedral Evening") : B+ (A-/B+)
I love the way he hacks out (how else can I try to describe it?) the line "around her neck" in Senor. The rest of the song is pretty good as well. I Want You is good, despite one lyric flub. I also like Pledging My Time and Tomorrow Is A Long Time. "Semi-acoustic" (used below) means that it's Bob with Benmont Tench on piano and Mike Campbell on electric guitar (so they aren't really acoustic). This show's a pretty good show from '87.
1. The Times They Are A-Changin'
2. Like A Rolling Stone
3. Maggie's Farm
4. Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power)
5. I Want You (Bob on harp)
6. Pledging My Time
7. Simple Twist Of Fate
8. Seeing The Real You At Last
9. I Shall Be Released - gap at end
10. Tomorrow Is A Long Time (semi-acoustic)
11. Dead Man, Dead Man
12. In The Garden
encore?:
13. Chimes Of Freedom (sung with Roger McGuinn)
14. Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Bob on harp)
10/17/87 London, England ("The Final Night And More") : A- (A-/A-)
The Times They Are A-Changin' is done extremely well! It's very very awesome! Forever Young, I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine, Simple Twist Of Fate, Don't Think Twice It's All Right, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, and Go Down Moses are all highlights as well. The filler contains a whole bunch of rare songs for this tour. Bob only performed House Of The Rising Sun and To Ramona once on this tour, Lenny Bruce and The Wicked Messenger and When I Paint My Masterpiece were each played twice, and Desolation Row and The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll were played three times. "Semi-acoustic" (used below) means that it's Bob with Benmont Tench on piano and Mike Campbell on electric guitar (so they aren't really acoustic). The bass is a bit high on this bootleg, but you can always just turn it down.
