A.J. Weberman Phone Conversation ('71) : B (B/B)
Well, this was pretty much a waste of time to listen to. Originally, I had avoided listening to it because I thought it was pretty low to listen to a recording of someone else's phone call. I finally decided to listen to it so I could make my mind up after hearing it. The only thing it does, is shine a bit (only a bit) of light on what Weberman is about - which is something I don't like. The last track, an answering machine, is thought by some to be Bob, but it doesn't sound like him to me - it sounds more like a parody.
1. Weberman intro
2. conversation #1
3. conversation #2 - gap at 6:41
4. some answering machine
08/01/71 New York City, New York ("Bob Dylan for Bangla Desh") : A- (B/A)
The sound quality rating is in brackets next to the source of the songs. Historically speaking, it's nice to have all that we do on this bootleg. However, for casual listening, I only ever really listen to 08/01/71 (evening - soundboard recording). This show is very much worth listening to. There is a very small skip between each track, unfortunately. The two songs from the George Harrison session were written by Bob with George, but are still very much works in progress.
rehearsal: ("C+")
1. If Not For You (acoustic?) - only a fragment of song while George Harrison gives an intro (can't hardly hear Bob)

Pecos Blues : A (A/A)
These are from the studio sessions for Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid and feature several outtakes. You can hear talking between songs and you can tell that these songs are very much still works in progress. This makes them kind of interesting to listen to. I love the music from the official CD, and the music here is really great and enjoyable as well. Tracks 13 and 15 aren't really songs: they're the band and Bob getting ready for that particular song.

01/06/74 (afternoon) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ("At The Spectrum") : B (C+/B+)
This is an audience recording from '74 so the sound quality's obviously not up to modern standards. This is the only To Ramona and the only Mama, You Been On My Mind in '74 (this adds to the historical significance). The solo acoustic Nobody 'Cept You is a highlight, and it's nice to hear four songs from Planet Waves. However, this show, the third in '74, just doesn't compare (in my mind) to the more energetic shows later on in '74.
Disc 1:
1. Ballad Of Hollis Brown
2. Lay, Lady, Lay
3. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
4. It Ain't Me, Babe
5. Tough Mama (Bob on harp)
6. Ballad Of A Thin Man - fades-out at end
7. All Along The Watchtower - continued on next track
8. All Along The Watchtower
9. Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat (Bob on harp)
10. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Disc 2:
1. To Ramona (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp) - fades-in at start (first line is cut out) - gap at end
2. Mama, You Been On My Mind (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
3. The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
4. Nobody 'Cept You (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
5. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (solo acoustic) - small gap at end
6. I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met) (Bob on harp?)
7. Forever Young
8. Something There Is About You (Bob on harp) - static glitch at 1:39
9. Like A Rolling Stone
01/14/74 (afternoon) Boston, Massachusetts ("Love Songs For America") : B (B/B)
There are constantly quiet crackle sounds to be heard, which leads me to believe that this is sourced from an acetate. This bootleg is from the soundboard. The acoustic set is the highlight for me. I also enjoy Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues and Ballad Of Hollis Brown. Unfortunately, the first line of The Times They Are A-Changin' has been cut out, and the sound isn't very good during Gates Of Eden because the 's' sound causes some distortion (and you wouldn't believe how many 's' sounds there are in that song!). From the concert, this bootleg is missing the second set by The Band and an electric set by Bob. That means that this bootleg is missing Forever Young, Something There Is About You, Like A Rolling Stone, and Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) - a pity.
Disc 1:
1. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
2. Lay, Lady, Lay
3. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
4. It Ain't Me, Babe
5. I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met)

4. Ballad Of Hollis Brown
5. Knockin' On Heaven's Door

7. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
8. Gates Of Eden (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
9. Just Like A Woman (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
10. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (solo acoustic)
02/14/74 (afternoon) Inglewood, California ("Paint The Daytime Black") : A (A/A)
This bootleg is sourced from soundboard. Unfortunately, it's missing the opening song by Bob: Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine. This was the second to last show in the '74 tour, and two songs from disc 1 (tracks 5 and 12) were released on the official live album: Before The Flood (disc 2 track 9 was released as a mix with the same song from the previous show). This might give an idea of how the songs sound. Apparently, the only song missing from The Band's set is The Shape I'm In, which was officially released on Before The Flood. The filler also contains a song that was released on Before The Flood (track 12). After hearing this bootleg, I realized just how awesome the '74 tour really was!
Disc 1:
1. Lay, Lady, Lay

1974 Tour Anthology : A- (B/A)
This is a great compilation of various great '74 performances. The tracks all flow nicely into one another and the songs are very well picked, so you know a lot of work went into getting this together. Most of these tracks are audience tapes which, unfortunately, aren't super sounding (hey, it was '74). Nonetheless, there are many gems here. Disc 1 is the electric highlights, disc 2 is the acoustic highlights, and disc 3 is both The Band's highlights and some superb soundboard recordings of Bob. If you love great performances and can put up with imperfect sound quality, this is recommended.

05/09/74 Friends Of Chile Benefit Concert, New York City, New York &
06/06/82 Peace Sunday Rally, Pasadena, California : B (B-/A)
This bootleg is for completists only. The sound isn't great (though it's not terrible either), and it's mainly desirable for historic purposes. The Peace Sunday Rally show was an anti-nuclear movement show and the Friends Of Chile Benefit Concert was a benefit for Chile. The '82 songs are interesting because one can hear how Bob sounded in between his '81 and '84 tours. The '74 songs are interesting because they have two live debuts and North Country Blues hasn't been played before or since. There are rumours that Dylan and Phil Ochs had drunk a bit too much before the show, and this could be possible as the deliveries are rather...err...odd. Blowin' In The Wind is horrible.
06/06/82 Peace Sunday Rally, Pasadena, California:
1. With God On Our Side (acoustic) (sung with Joan Baez) - mic feedback at 3:38 (this is on original)
2. A Pirate Looks At Forty (acoustic) (sung with Joan Baez) - written by Jimmy Buffett - volume is louder at start
3. Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic) (sung with Joan Baez) - Joan's talking at start is cut - word at end of verse is cut out in distortion at 1:17
05/09/74 Friends Of Chile Benefit Concert, New York City, New York:
4. Victor Jara (sung by Arlo Guthrie) - written by Adrian Mitchell and Arlo Guthrie
5. Deportee (sung with Arlo Guthrie) (Bob on guitar and background vocals) - written by Woody Guthrie
6. North Country Blues (acoustic) (live debut of this song from The Times They Are A-Changin') - gap at 4:40 and at end
7. Spanish Is The Loving Tongue (acoustic) (live debut of this song from Dylan) - written by unknown (traditional)
8. Blowin' In The Wind (acoustic) - gap at 1:06
Blood On The Tapes : A (A-/A)
This bootleg presents a bunch of BOTT outtakes, and it does it well. Apparently it presents us with all of the circulating outtakes, in order in which they were recorded. We have two different versions of If You See Her Say Hello, Tangled Up In Blue, and Idiot Wind. Two songs not released on BOTT are here: Call Letter Blues and Up To Me. Call Letter Blues, however, has the same melody as Meet Me In The Morning. Both Call Letter Blues and Up To Me have been officially released (Call Letter Blues is on The Bootleg Series vol. #1-3 and Up To Me is on Biograph). A few of these songs appear on the other BOTT outtake bootleg, BOTT - The New York Sessions, and a few appear officially released (on The Bootleg Series vol. #1-3, for example), but it's nice to have all of these songs here. None of these songs ended up on BOTT, and many have a very different sound to them compared to the versions which did make it onto BOTT. The sound quality varies (but remains very good) as the tracks are often taken from different sources/sessions. There are a few skips near the middle of Idiot Wind (track 4).
09/16/74:
1. If You See Her, Say Hello (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
2. Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
3. Call Letter Blues
4. Idiot Wind (acoustic) (Bob on harp) - a few words skipped near the middle of the song
5. Tangled Up In Blue (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
09/17/74:
6. You're A Big Girl Now (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
7. Shelter From The Storm (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
09/19/74:
8. If You See Her, Say Hello (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
9. Tangled Up In Blue (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
10. Up To Me (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
unknown:
11. Idiot Wind (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
BOTT - The New York Sessions : A- (A-/A)
This is how Blood On The Tracks would've sounded if Bob hadn't gone back to re-record some of the songs; it has the same tracklisting as BOTT does. Some of the songs are the same as they are on BOTT, but some are drastically different. Many of the songs here are slower than on BOTT, and many have different lyrics: Tangled Up In Blue is an example, If You See Her, Say Hello is another. Many of the tracks have fewer instruments than on BOTT. The Idiot Wind here is very interesting; on BOTT, it's a bitter, biting song, and on this bootleg, it's a slow, sad song. Tracks 2, 5, 6, 9, and 10 are the same on both BOTT and this bootleg (I think), but because of the difference in the other tracks, this bootleg has a very different feel from the official BOTT. This bootleg is a very good one and is worth owning. The only problem is that it's sourced from an acetate, so you can hear the occasional pop. But these hardly take away from the sound.
1. Tangled Up In Blue (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
2. Simple Twist Of Fate (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
3. You're A Big Girl Now (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
4. Idiot Wind (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
5. You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
6. Meet Me In The Morning (acoustic?)
7. Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
8. If You See Her, Say Hello (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
9. Shelter From The Storm (acoustic) (Bob on harp)
10. Buckets Of Rain (acoustic)
