The Genuine Basement Tapes : B+ (B-/A)
It took me quite some time to finally get into these, but I'm glad I did get into them. Five CD's of material from Big Pink and the sessions with The Band. These were recorded and are very much a bridge between Blonde On Blonde and John Wesley Harding, with some wonderfully spooky songs among others sung in a superb voice. There's lots of terrific material here, in terms of lyrics, singing, playing, and everything else. Some of this is music at its greatest. Lots of the titles below are suggestions and lots have alternate titles and it's also unknown who wrote many of them. The sound quality varies from track to track, but these tracks were recorded on a home tape recorder or something like it so we're lucky to have them at all, and the sound quality adds to the basement feel. Some tracks have some vinyl-related noises.
For some reason, the last few tracks on most of the discs have annoying skips on them, and you might notice that the last few tracks tend to be some of the highlights. I wouldn't, however, recommend this set. I'd recommend the newer, remastered A Tree With Roots instead (which I have) because it is one fewer CDs while covering almost the same material and because it has better (some times much better) sound quality.
I prefer this collection of the '67 material immensely to that on The Genuine Basement Tapes (GBT). First of all, the sound quality here is superb (sometimes drastically so) for most of the songs. Second of all, this collection is 4 CDs instead of 5 CDs and they both cover almost the same amount of material except that the GBT has four songs by The Band without Bob and one Too Much Of Nothing which is a mix of the two takes on this set (so it is not really that important). This set has Silhouettes (not much of a 'song'), an instrumental, and Come All Ye Fair And Tender Ladies, none of which are on GBT. I HIGHLY recommend getting this set!
