05/07/65 Manchester, England ("Now's The Time For Your Tears") : A (A-/A)
A great album of Dylan in 1965 when he was still solo-acoustic. He sounds young and a bit like he does on Bringing It All Back Home except that he sounds a bit smoother. He sounds very energetic and hits some notes that one wouldn't think that Dylan would hit (especially in Don't Think Twice; Dylan laughs at how high he went, as does the audience!). At times, he says very funny things (he refers to If You Gotta Go, Go Now as Gates Of Eden!), but he doesn't talk too much. This is just a great album if you like Dylan acoustic.
I couldn't say which songs are highlights; they all are great! In Gates Of Eden, he adds a catchy little guitar thing which he plays between verses. A sped-up version of With God On Our Side is on this bootleg as is a live version of If You Gotta Go, Go Now. Although If You Gotta Go, Go Now didn't get much audience reaction (compared to other times I've heard it), Talking World War III Blues did (he added in small lyric changes which made the crowd laugh and clap a lot). The Times They Are A-Changin' starts out really quiet and then builds up to an acceptable volume level.
Disc 2 from this bootleg is Blonde On Blonde in a mono mix. However, for some strange reason, the source that was used to change the sound to mono isn't very desirable. I am willing to trade disc 1 independently of disc 2 because disc 2 isn't a very good listen (it's not terrible, it's just not great). However, if you're dying to hear a mono Blonde On Blonde, you might want disc 2.
The next three tracks (tracks 6-8) are from a different session with Bob and Robbie Robertson on acoustic guitars again (and again in a hotel room). Bob's voice is rather smooth, with a slight hint of the Nashville Skyline voice. The sound quality's also better. These tracks are a lot shorter than the tracks from the Denver hotel session. The last two tracks (tracks 9-10) are from the Klas Burling interview. This is interesting to listen to. This is the interview that "I happen to be swede myself" comes from. The sound quality is really good for this interview.
I put the sound quality letter grade for each of the sources next to the info on the source. Basically, this bootleg is for hardcore fans and it won't get played casually. It's all worth it just for the interview. The rest is also interesting.

Highway 61 Revisited Again : B (B/B)
This is sourced from an acetate. There are skips in most of the tracks on this bootleg. They skip a word (or a few), or some instrumental part. There is also some crackling noise on certain tracks (see below for specific tracks). Tracks 3-9, 12-13 are different mixes of the officially released version. This is a great version of Desolation Row. It is very different from the official release. This version can also be found on The Genuine Bootleg Series (a different bootleg).
1. Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? (Bob on harp)
2. Sitting On A Barbed-Wire Fence (Bob on harp) - one line skipped (sourced from acetate)
3. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob on harp)
4. Ballad Of A Thin Man

Folk Rogue : A (A-/A)
Even though these performances are from the 60's, the sound quality is awesome (they're from the soundboard). This is really a great bootleg; it takes us through the Newport Festivals up to when Bob goes electric in '65. This was his first ever electric performance and he sounds great. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is great at playing with him. The only song missing from the Newport Folk Festival '64 is a duet with Joan Baez for With God On Our Side which followed Chimes Of Freedom. There are three tracks in which the sound quality isn't as great as the rest: track 7 would probably receive an A-, and tracks 11 and 12 would probably receive B+ ratings. Track 13 ("We want Bobby!") is the crowd shouting for Bobby. By the way, I find track 1 terrible! Bob and Joan didn't duet well that time! But at least they sound like they're having fun... This Maggie's Farm is one of my favourite versions.
Newport Folk Festival '64:
1. It Ain't Me, Babe (acoustic) (sung with Joan Baez) - performed at a workshop
2. All I Really Want To Do (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
3. To Ramona (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
4. Mr. Tambourine Man (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
5. Chimes Of Freedom (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)

10. It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (live debut of this song from Highway 61 Revisited)

13. "We want Bobby!"
14. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
15. Mr. Tambourine Man (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
09/03/65 Los Angeles, California ("Live At The Hollywood Bowl") : A (A-/A)
This is the complete circulating Hollywood Bowl concert; it's suspected that the encores are missing from it but they aren't available anywhere else (to the best of my knowledge). The songs are arranged in a way similar to the '65 solo acoustic tour (from Dont Look Back) and aren't like they are on Live 1966. This is a great all-around show.
1. She Belongs To Me (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
2. To Ramona (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
3. Gates Of Eden (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
4. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp) - loud pop sound at start

7. Mr. Tambourine Man (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp) - fades out before song is over
8. I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met) (Bob on harp)

13. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob on harp)
10/30/65 Hartford, Connecticut : B+ (C+/A)
This recording features parts of the 10/30/65 show - on many of the songs, the taper decided not to tape for whatever reason so we really only have: She Belongs To Me, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tombstone Blues, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Maggie's Farm, It Ain't Me Babe, and Positively 4th Street. The tracks which say "very short fragment(s)" are just that: very short. The sound quality is in general not very good, with some occasional distortion in the right speaker when Bob's voice gets loud, and with the audience being very upfront in the sound. This show is mainly for those interested at a glimpse of how Bob sounded at this point of his 'going-electric' tour. Bob just yells out the electric songs and it's very cool and powerful. Maggie's Farm is very interesting, especially the way it starts off. You can hear some angry people yelling at the start of Ballad Of A Thin Man.
1. She Belongs To Me (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp) - tape fluctuation at 0:14 - distortion at 0:22 - odd noise from 0:25-0:27 - difficult to hear from 0:45-0:59
2. To Ramona (solo acoustic) - very short fragments (this is on original)
Gates Of Eden (solo acoustic) - very short fragment (this is on original)
3. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
4. Desolation Row (solo acoustic) - very short fragment (this is on original)
Love Minus Zero/No Limit (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp) - very short fragment (this is on original)
5. Mr. Tambourine Man (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)
6. Tombstone Blues
7. Baby, Let Me Follow You Down (Bob on harp) - written by Eric von Schmidt
8. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues - very short fragment (this is on original)
9. Maggie's Farm
10. It Ain't Me, Babe (Bob on harp)
11. Ballad Of A Thin Man - short fragment (this is on original)
12. Positively 4th Street
13. Like A Rolling Stone - fragments - clipped short after 3 minutes or so (this is on original)
12/04/65 Berkeley, California ("Long Distance Operator") : A- (C+/A)
This bootleg contains the electric set from 12/04/65 (and is missing the acoustic set). It also contains the "only surviving performance of this song [Long-Distance Operator] by Dylan", according to Monica's Dude's site here. Dylan wrote Long-Distance Operator, and this seems to be the only place to hear him singing it live (and, as a bonus, this is probably the live debut). This bootleg also contains an absolutely awesome rockin' version of It Ain't Me, Babe. There are short gaps between each song. It's really a shame that the sound quality is so poor, and yet this bootleg's still very much worth having and hearing (and it's clearly important historically).
1. Tombstone Blues
2. I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met) (Bob on harp) - some of harmonica at start and first line are clipped
3. Baby, Let Me Follow You Down (Bob on harp) - written by Eric von Schmidt
4. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
5. Long-Distance Operator (live debut of this song from The Basement Tapes)
6. It Ain't Me, Babe (Bob on harp)
7. Ballad Of A Thin Man
8. Positively 4th Street
9. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob on harp)
Thin Wild Mercury Music : A (A-/A)
This is a great bootleg to have to hear Bob working towards Blonde On Blonde; the songs on this bootleg are all studio outtakes. Some of these songs have appeared elsewhere, for example the She's Your Lover Now track 12 was on the Bootleg Series. The songs that say "not a complete song" next to them are here as they are on the original bootleg, I just indicated that so that one isn't disappointed that there isn't a complete song there. This bootleg is very much worth owning. Hearing the progress of Visions Of Johanna (as well as the others) is great. This bootleg is very comparable to the Blonde On Blonde Sessions (I've used almost the same reviews for both bootlegs).
1. If You Gotta Go, Go Now (Bob on harp)
2. She Belongs To Me (acoustic) (Bruce Langhorne on electric guitar)

This is a great bootleg to have to hear Bob while he was working on Blonde On Blonde; the songs on disc 1 of this bootleg are all studio outtakes. 05/17/66 Manchester, UK ("Guitars Kissing And The Contemporary Fix") : A (A/A)
This concert is, of course, excellent! This is what used to circulate of this concert before it was officially released in '98. It's very unlikely I'll trade this very easily/eagerly as it is very close to Live 1966 (the acoustic set on disc 1 is almost identical to Live 1966, however the electric set on disc 2 is a slightly different mix). I'd recommend it as a companion piece. Anyway, as I said, this concert is superb. The sound quality's excellent as well. There is a gap of silence in Mr. Tambourine Man with about 1:30 left in the track (this is on the original - I should know as I have the original).
Disc 1:
1. She Belongs To Me (solo acoustic) (Bob on harp)

The Secret 66 : B- (B/B+)
The first five tracks are from a session with Bob and Robbie Robertson on acoustic guitars and Robert Shelton is taping (I believe). They're really just works in progress, so there are mistakes and talking and songs not played start to end. They're also in somewhat poor sound quality (which can be expected). The first track has numerous attempts at the song Positively Van Gogh (12:30 on the first track). This is one of only three versions of Sad-Eyed Lady that are available to us (one of the other two is on Blonde On Blonde and the last one is heard on Renaldo And Clara, done as a rehearsal), so it is pretty rare (the track lasts 13:40). These songs were probably all written by Bob but the titles are unknown for some of them so the titles below are just guesses.
03/13/66 hotel room, Denver, Colorado: ("C+")
1. Positively Van Gogh (acoustic) - ends with an unpleasant tape noise
2. Don't Tell Him (acoustic)
3. If You Want My Love (acoustic)
4. Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (acoustic)
5. Just Like A Woman (acoustic)
05/19/66 hotel room, Glasgow, Scotland: ("B-")
6. Does She Need Me? (On A Rainy Afternoon) (acoustic)
7. I Can't Leave Her Behind (acoustic)
8. What Kind Of Friend Is This? (acoustic)
