Bob Dylan - 1965 Revisited : A- (B/A)

This 14-disc bootleg has some very interesting material on it, but I would say that the whole thing is mainly desirable for collectors/historians. There is some very good material on here that others would like, but a lot of this material is in poor sound quality and wouldn't appeal to non-collectors. Nonetheless, I think it's a great project. The letter grade in brackets next to the disc number before the review is the performance-quality letter grade. The sound-quality rating is in brackets next to the source of the songs on each disc. My main source for information on this bootleg comes from this website: http://theband.hiof.no/albums/boot_1965_revisited.html. It's really a great site.
Disc 1 ("A"): This disc has several Bringing It All Back Home outtakes, as well as the songs from the Les Crane show in '65. The outtakes are a great listen, and the Les Crane show is fabulous. Bob's hillarious during the interview and the songs are great! It's interesting to note that during the Les Crane songs, there was an electric guitar playing (a sign of things to come...).

Disc 2 ("B"): The sound quality is not very good for this '65 show, but it's far from terrible. One of the tapers keeps making comments on how she doesn't know if the recorder's working. Unfortunately, she sometimes makes these comments during the songs... She also makes other comments during the performance. The reason that a few of the songs are cut as described below is because the tapers decided they wanted to wait for a rarer song... There is some tape fluctuaton at points not mentioned below, and it comes up once in a while. The performance sounds very good, it's just a shame that it's not in better sound quality (though I am thankful for what we've got).

Disc 3 ("B"): The songs from 04/30/65 The Oval City Hall, Sheffield, UK are in terrible sound quality. When everyone claps, you can't hear Bob. Same thing happens when everyone laughs. This bootleg has the first six songs from this concert. It fades out and fades back in between each track, which is good because the clapping is deafening. The parts from Dont Look Back are usually not complete songs; they are usually clips ranging from under 30 seconds to near complete songs. If you've seen Dont Look Back, you'll know what I mean.

Disc 5 ("B-"): Bob is very distant, hard to hear, and sounds as though he's underwater or something. Also, the recorder is bumped quite a bit. The setlist is identical to that of the Manchester show from two days before (which is on disc 4), so this is more of a historical disc, I suppose. It's very hard to listen to it, though. There are fade-outs and fade-ins between each track.

Disc 6 ("A"): This concert appears to be one of Bob's last completely solo acoustic shows. It was put together for BBC and was televised. This show features two live debuts, both from the album The Times They Are A-Changin': One Too Many Mornings and Boots Of Spanish Leather. It also contains what I believe is to be the only Ballad Of Hollis Brown from '65.

Disc 9 ("A"): The Forest Hills concert is interesting from a historical perspective. It's the first ever half acoustic, half electric show by Bob. This show continues with four songs on disc 10. The sound quality's not good at all, but it allows you to hear how the audience was pretty split. Some singalong to the electric songs, some boo. Sometimes you can't hear Bob, all you can hear are angry people. It's pretty intense, actually. The acoustic set features the live debut of Desolation Row. The electric set features the live debuts of Tombstone Blues, From A Buick 6, and Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues.

The Playboy interview fades-out before it's over, as this is only part 1 of the interview: part 2 is on disc 12. Both of these interviews are somewhat interesting to listen to once or so, but they're not the better interviews I've heard Bob take part in.

Disc 12 ("B"): This disc contains the second part of the Nat Hentoff (unpublished) Playboy interview (75:22). The first part of the Playboy interview is on disc 11. This interview is somewhat interesting to listen to once or so, but it's not the best interview I've heard Bob take part in.

Disc 13 ("B+"): The press conference here is one of the better ones to hear. There is an annoying radio voice at one point for 11 seconds, and the sound quality isn't as good as another bootleg I have that has this press conference. However, this other bootleg - called 1965 Press Conference (12/03/65) - edits the press conference. This presents the complete thing. Only the electric set from the 12/04/65 show circulates, and this disc has the first three songs from that set; the other songs are on disc 14.

Disc 14 ("A"): Only the electric set from the 12/04/65 show circulates, and this disc has all but three songs from that set; the other three songs are on disc 13. This show contains the only known live Long-Distance Operator to be in circulation. It also contains a very good, very rockin' It Ain't Me, Babe. The press conference is the kind that Bob was used to back then: the same old questions and Bob's witty answers. It's about 34 minutes long. For the first few minutes, it's very hard to hear what's happening but it becomes easier to hear afterwards.
