Of course, otters do have to learn to fish alone. My guess is that when otters come into a pond fish either bury themselves in the mud or seek refuge in the grasses in the pond. (In the winter when the ice freezes clear I get a chance to skate over the fish in the the shallows and watch them hide in the grasses as I skate over them.) So after group fishing the otters often go off on their own and duck into the clumps of grass.
