THE MUMMIES OF KABAYAN

The Ibaloi tribe of Benguet believed in the afterlife and perfected the ritual of mummification. These mummies several hundred years old were found intact in caves where they were laid to rest after several days or even weeks of feasting and ritual celebration. Some of the mummies even have tattoos like this one on the right. Along with the mummies were animal shaped coffins where some mummies were placed and also other ancient artifacts such as pottery, tools and clothing.
