Kelly   CHARLES HENRY DOWNS Sergeant Company B, 35th Kentucky Infantry Third Great Grandfather Charles Henry Downs was born ca. 1843 in Kentucky, possibly Edmonson or Grayson Co. Sometime after the opening of the Civil War, Downs enlisted in Co. B, 35th Kentucky Infantry. He was later promoted to sergeant. Following the war, in 1869, Charles Downs married Susan Ellen Decker (born 9 September 1849 in Grayson Co to William Decker and Sarah Saltsman). He was last recorded as residing in Sand Spring, Grayson Co., Ky in 1880. Downs applied for a veterans pension (application #419374) on 7 April 1881. He died August 27, 1887. She applied for a widows pension (application #464959, certificate #289691) on 11 August 1890. She died 23 December 1933. Return to the Maryland Dept.
