Amnesty International is comited to helping people who are victimized by war, violence, oppresion, dicrimination, and bigotry. They fight to ensure that all human rights are respected acording to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights This organization is focused on "preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights." Amnesty International has over 2.2 million members in over 150 countries worldwide. Each member either has contributed by way of economic support or by directly taking action against some of the issues Amnesty International takes a stand against.
Amnesty International was founded by Peter Benenson in 1961.It was his origional intention to launch an appeal in Britain with the goal of obtaining an amnesty for prisoners of conscience all over the world. Over the years Amnesty International has challenged many other violations of human rights, such as torture and capital punishment. Today the organization works against a variety of different human rights issues.
Right now Amnesty International's major global campaigns include the Stop Violence Against Women campaign, the Stop Torture campaign, and the Control Arms campaign. Other issues that Amnesty International is fighting include: the death penalty, poverty, refugees rights, migrant workers' rights, the internet and human rights, economic globalization, international justice, child soldiers, and the United Nations.
