Not with the BARF diet!!!!!

Hi ..
You have reached the web pages of Blairwick Dalmatians
Wyee, Central Coast, NSW, Australia...
and this is our page about the diet that we feed our dogs......
(Last updated July 2004)

The purpose of this page is to give you an insight into  how we feed our dogs & cats
and to use the links that I have listed on the next page
to explore the concept of the BARF diet and the advantages it has for your  animals!!!

By feeding the BARF diet we feed no commercially prepared foods to our dogs...
only fresh raw foods...

In 1992 we read  some articles in our NSW Canine Journal
written by an Australian  vet, Dr Ian Billinghurst,
which were  excerts from  a book that he had just published in Australia called
"Give Your Dog A Bone".

He writes about commercial dog foods and the problems it has caused
in ALL dog breeds world wide over the last 30 years....
and why a  natural diet is more appropriate....
(see links page for further reading)

We liked what we were reading..it made a lot of sense!!!!
We purchased the book ....and our dogs & us have never looked back!!!!

So....what exactly do we feed our dogs ????
We follow the raw food diet described by Dr Ian Billinghurst in his
"Give Your Dog A Bone" & "Grow Your Pups With Bones" books...
taking into account some  suggestions that he has that are  specific for dalmatians...

Balancing their diet over a 2 week period they get a mixture of

*whole raw chicken (heads/feet/necks/backs/carcasses/wings/thighs etc)
every night except 2 when they get red meaty bones..
* they  are also fasted once a fortnight.

3 or 4 mornings a week (depending on my time schedule!!) they  get:
* minced meat, a cup or so
or blood from defrosting the chicken to give taste so they eat their veges!!! BG
*a cup of raw pureed vegetables & fruits
*water added to this to make it soupy for extra fluid intake
*a couple of spoonfuls of acidopholus yoghurt
*an entire egg, crushed in my hand and given, shell & all
*garlic, crushed      *a big squirt of honey
*vit C ....vit E...kelp....wheatgerm....Vit B complex....
*cod liver oil   *raw linseed (flax) oil
*into this mixture I add any leftovers that we have in the fridge!!!!

Most days they also get a big raw bone to chew on...

The above diet is then adjusted for puppies and pregnant & feeding mothers...

To some of you this may all look a little more "complicated"
than opening a bag of dry dog food..
but actually with a little foresight and planning it is  quite easy...
we are busy people and we feed 8 dalmatians and a smooth fox terrier this way.!!!!
The important aspects are finding a chicken outlet and  / or butcher to
supply you with the raw meaty bones that you need
and to use all your family's old, unused  vegetables & fruit + whatever is seasonally on special  when you are pureeing them in your juicer or blender.
I spend half an hour each fortnight pureeing enough  vegetable & fruit
then freeze them immediately in appropriate sized containers.
The difference we (and others) have found in our dogs health is well worth that
 bit of extra effort!!!

BARF is not just for dogs...!!!!
our two British Shorthair cats are also BARFers...
regularly chewing their way through raw chicken wing tips,  chicken necks and meaty offcuts
plus a variety of other fresh raw foods.

So what have  we achieved  by using  this diet ? ? ?

Our dogs are superbly healthy..
they have plenty of energy
their hunger is more fulfilled (good for a dal!! VBG)
they have sparkling white teeth and NO dog breath!!!
their coats are shiny,  thick & healthy
and they are parasite free   eg: worms & fleas
they maintain their weight & figures very easily
they have firm droppings...
(more pleasant  to pick up than the voluminous runny dry food ones!!!)
longevity is of major importance for us...that our dals live a to a healthy old age..
(our 11 year old dalmatian  is as spritely & healthy now as he was at 3
and one of our  males   did his ET trial at the age of 7 years..a 20km trot with no problems!!)

All our puppies are BARF raised by BARFing mums..
and in comparing our pre BARF litters (dry food) to these,
we  are now experiencing...
Mothers that keep their figures better before, during & after having a litter
they whelp easier & have less post whelping discharge
they have an excellent supply of milk for their puppies
Puppies that are parasite free, have well defined muscle, strong jaws & teeth
their hunger is more fulfilled..no over eating !!
they are grown slowly on this diet to aid in the reduction of any bone & joint problems..
The health & virility of our Stud dogs and Bitches  is maintained longer into their life,
allowing us to space our breeding program out over many years.

All our dog & puppy buyers are  encouraged to continue with the BARF diet,
being supplied with a BARF diet guide and all the information they need
to make an educated decision about how they would like to feed their own dog .
We are always available to give guidance and suggestions...

We have over the years had many friends & acquaintances comment on the excellent condition of our dogs and we are constantly spreading the word about the BARF diet!!!!
