Character Summaries
Ch. 1: There were so many things going on at once that the men were all extremely distracted. They couldn’t focus on the missions. They were thinking about things such as: How are the men that were in the crash? Are the rangers able to secure the area? What is going on at the crash site? Is anyone dead? Questions like these and many others like them were running through the ranger’s heads. This caused the men’s focus to be split in many directions. Thinking of something other then the crash seemed to be throwing the men completely off.
Ch. 2: As soon as the men hit the street the sound of gunfire had filled their heads. There was clouds of dust everywhere that was blinding their vision. This caused them to get set behind in their missions. They all scattered to walls for protection until the smoke cleared. Elvis’s Black Hawk-Super Six One- crashed and he died. McMahon was the one who had found Elvis’s dead body smashed in the cockpit.
Ch. 3:                 Abdiaziz Ali Aden was a man who is mentioned in this chapter.  He was a Somali teen who is caught in the middle of this entire battle.  He worked for an American corporation in Somalia, and was actually at work when the Americans began their mission in Somalia.  He left work to find his family and take them to a safe spot, then he returned to his home to protect it from looters.  When Ali came back to his house he found a crashed American helicopter there, and simply ran into his house for protection.  From there, he was able to watch all that occurred with the Americans.
Ch. 4: This chapter was about the rangers and how they had to work together to try and rescue the others from the crashed helicopter.  It tells how the rangers had been throwing grenades at the Somali’s when something bad happened.  One of the grenades did not explode and the Somali’s were able to reuse it against the Americans.
Ch. 5:  This shows how a group of friends who had been flying in the same aircraft worked together to land their helicopter safely.  It tells about how one of the men had already lived through a helicopter crash before and he could not believe that it was happening again.
Ch. 6: In this chapter many things occur.  This chapter tells about how the man Dale Sizemore had an unfortunate incident and was unable to join in on the mission because of a broken arm.  It tells about his feelings about the man who replaced him and how he felt about not being able to go.  It also talks about things around the hanger that make the boys comfortable.  There is a radio in the hanger that all the boys listen to that plays different kinds of music during the day.  The hanger also is the living space for all the boys so it also shows how the ranger Ruiz asks Sizemore to give his wife his farewell letter if anything happens to him.  It is an emotional chapter.Ch. 7:  This chapter tells about a rescue team that assembled to go back out and save the men who were still trapped in Somalia.  It told about how all kinds of volunteers went out to help and how even the desk clerks went out to fight.  This chapter tells about how the ranger Sizemore was so angry about having a desk clerk go out to fight in his place, that he cut off the cast on his arm and went out on the rescue mission with the other men.  It said he was shooting everything like crazy.
Ch. 8:  This chapter tells about the rangers Shughart and Gordon, two sniper shooters for the Americans.  They were in the air ready to jump and join the battle because they saw all of the Somali’s getting closer and closer to their men.  It was intense reading about how the men were so enthusiastic about going to fight even though everyone knew it was helpless.  The men did get to go eventually.
Ch. 9:  This chapter tells about how the Sergeant Ed Yurek and others had finally gotten a corner in Mogadishu under their control and how he had been told to leave that safe space.  His men and himself were told to go to the crash site, which they did.  This chapter showed how the men watched and observed the Somali’s and their weapons closely.

Ch. 10:  This chapter informed us about the feeling of hope and laughter.  It also told us about how the Somali’s had been firing at two men, Nelson and Twombly, when Twombly had shot and killed them with his SAW and his rifle.  This also showed how Twombly had shot them off right next to Nelson’s face so he was momentarily blinded, and how he went deaf for a few hours after that.
Ch. 11:  This chapter really told more about what the men went through when they were trying to stick together and move through the streets.  There were men being shot down here and there and the Delta men and the Rangers were barely working together.  These men were losing their focus and it was affecting them terribly.
Ch. 12:  Another Somali named Mohamed Sheik Ali who was a richer of the Somali’s.  He ran from his home when the attacks began because he was afraid for his life.  When he returned home he found it thrashed and he found one of his friends dead.  He went to bury him but the Americans kept flying overhead and shooting so he just allowed his other friends to bury him in the night.
Ch. 13:  This chapter tells about the men contemplating their future decisions about staying in the military.  It tells how the ranger Floyd was out on the actual mission and was wondering what he was doing there. He had a family with parents that loved him back home and he didn’t know if he would ever see them again.  It also spoke about how the boys had to deal with death’s of loved ones and how they were able to make it through terrible ordeal because of the coincidence of the way things were going.  It was very interesting
