In this particular scene you get to learn some of what the ranger’s backgrounds are. And that Eversmann had to take over because his platoon sergeant had to go home on family illness problems, and then the man who replaced him had had a seizer, so Eversmann had to be in charge. The majority of the men who had gone to Somalia were very young (19) and very inexperienced. The rangers were very cocky about this mission so they started throwing out things that they many have needed later such as: night-vision goggles, canteens, bayonets, and even some body armor. When it had come time to fast-rope from the helicopters Chalk Four was about seventy higher then they normally were and they were in the same position for a dangerous amount of time, which made them extremely vulnerable. When Blackburn, one of the younger rangers, fast-roped from the helicopter he missed the rope and had fallen, once they had gotten to him he was bleeding out of his ears, mouth and nose. As soon as Eversmann, the last man out, hit the ground one of his other men, Galantine, had gotten their thumb shot and it was barely hanging on by a little piece of skin. It was obvious the battle hadn’t started off too well. The scene begins by introducing Matt Eversmann, the leader of Chalk 4, and his entire Chalk. They are all very close for they have spent much of their time together. They are very dependent on one another, which is a very good thing because they were about to drop in uninvited on a gathering of Habr Gibr clan leaders in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia. This clan was lead by warlord, Mohamed Farrah Aidid. His clan had picked a fight with the United States and now it was “going down.” Eversmann and his Chalk were very prepared for this mission, for they had done this kind of attack dozens of times without difficulty. Unsure if the mission was real or just practice they sat there waiting for the launch word, “Irene.” The commander of Task Force Ranger, Major General William F. Garrison, had come to see them off, which gave them a hint that this mission was a go. At 3:32 P.M. Officer Mike Durant announced the launch word, “Irene!” the mission was on its way. The Chalk thought they were invincible and nothing could possibly go wrong so they decided to leave behind what they thought was dead weight things such as night vision goggles and gloves. They were in for a rude awakening. Within the first scene a Black Hawk crashes and they all go into a panic state. Blackburr has fallen from a helicopter about 100 feet above the ground and is severely injured. Gallinting is shoot and basically losses his hand. The Humvees are now running late, so once they hit the ground they have no reinforcements to get them out of there. Everything seems to turn on them. |

Act 1 Scene 1 1. On October 3rd, 1993 the true story of Black Hawk Down, really began. The mission that had been planned was to send out a group of elite U.S. soldiers to capture several top lieutenants of the Somalia warlord. The warlord was named Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Matt Eversmann, leader of chalk four led his chalk into Somalia to arrest and imprison, two Aidid’s lieutenants. Unfortunately the group of rangers that had been sent were bemused enough to think that they did not need much to win this battle. The rangers allowed their pride in our country to be their down fall. They did not use all of their precautions that they were going to need. The rangers ended up getting themselves into a spot where just on the descent from the helicopter they had already gotten a man with a broken neck, and a crew in the very center of the battle with enemy’s on all sides. |
