December 8, 1999 Government announced today that persons affected by the Black Mallet/Maynard Hill earth movements will be relocated to Carellie Gardens as moves continue to provide some respite to families affected by the disaster. It is Government's intention to relocate the entire affected area but priority will be given to persons directly affected. According to the prime minister's press secretary Earl Bousquet person's whi have already been relocated to private dwellings and whose rent the government us paying can profit the opportunity of relocating to Carellie Gardens. "They have the option of remaining where they are and continue to pay the rent, or if they are home owners they can negotiate with government to relocate their homes to Carellie Gardens or a private property", said Bousquet. A permanent office will be located at the Marchand Community Centre to facilitate the processing of persons who wish to b emoved to Carellie Gardens and also to deal with other matters relating to the Black Mallet/Maynard Hill crisis. So far 37 families have been relocated at a cost of one hundred and sixty six thousand dollars. SOURCE: Government Information Service
December 2, 1999 While the Government seeks to stabilise the Black Mallet and Maynard Hill areas affected by the affected by the earth movement it is anticipated than many of the home owners who leave already been temporarily relocated out of the area will not return. Government has identified a relocation site to accommodate these affected residents. The Prime Minister will meet again with the residents shortly to discuss the detailed proposals for their relocation. SOURCE: Government Information Service
December 2, 1999 The Government's consulting engineers, engineers from the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities and the UWI team involved in the analysis of the Black Mallet earth movement have unanimously agreed that there is an immediate need for improved surface drainage upstream and within the area, as a priority, if the movement in Black Mallet and Maynard Hill is to be brought to a halt. Of critical importance is the subsurface drainage within the affected area. As such, the Government is moving expeditiously to implement improved drainage and dewatering plans in the affected area.
