Dirty Water Rising: Abundance of Pollution
^Main Page^
With so many improvements in the field of Science these days, it's amazing to see that pollution continues to be one of the world's top problems. Places across the world are in terrible shape from lack of care, and treatment. In our own backyard, Boston Harbor, pollution is once again rearing it's ugly head and becoming a major problem. What steps are being taken to eliminate this problem? What steps need to be taken?
Current examples of World Pollution:

- Deer/Nut Island treatment plant runoff into Boston Harbor

- Combined Sewer Overflow release into MA Water Bodies

- Saugus River Flood Control Project (Negative effects) (Pilayella Littoralis)

- Onondaga Lake Pollution in Syracuse

- Illegal Disposal of Radioactive Waste by various World Powers, like Russia and Norway

Steps being taken to stop these World Pollution events:

Deer/Nut Island:
- Official Permit issued to Deer Island to keep it's emission standards high
- Closely inspected pollution levels
- Most aggresive and toughest discharge permit for a secondary sewage treatment plant
- Nut Island sewage release fiasco has been contained, restoration has begun

CSO Release into Boston Harbor
- In 1987, annual CSO release was 3.3 billion gallons, this has been reduced to 1 billion gallons currently
- By 2008, when the plan has been fully implemented, Annual CSO release should be ~400 million gallons, a 90% reduction from 1987's levels
- Court Order for MWRA to spend ~500 Million to work on cutting down annual CSO release

Saugus River Flood Control Dredging/Pollution
- Little to no steps have been taken to stop the dredging of the Saugus River, and a bill was passed in 1992 to ALLOW flood control projects

Onondaga Lake Pollution
- 1972, Clean Water Act passed
- Lawsuit against Allied Chemical Corporation to stop the dumping of Mercury
- Ban against laundry detergent using Phosphorous
- 90's: Modifications and upgrade of pumping stations
- Aquatic Habitat Restoration Projects begain in 1994

Illegal Dumping of Radioactive Waste
- The current halt of radioactive weapons testing
- Reduced emissions from European recycling plants
- Continuous monitoring of Emissions by U.N. and other groups
- Reparations of inadequate storage facilities
