Wonder and Awe at Glacier National Park

Greg Powell

Every summer for the past six years I have taken a road trip with my uncle Greg. We meet on a sunday morning for brunch, pick a direction, and just drive. This year we picked the northwest. We saw washington, Oregon, and Idaho, but the best stop was Glacier national park in western Montana. We spent the night just outside the park and in the morning we explored. My uncle isn't really an outdoors type person so I was on my own for doing what interested me in the park, hiking. I found what I thought would be a four hour ranger-led hike on Avalanche Trail. The park ranger who led it was in his seventies and had been working in the park for forty years. His knowledge and passion were astounding. Two and a half hours later the narrow trail opened out into a beach seen in the pitures below. Having spent the previous two hours on a narrow wooded trail this open view was quite striking. Each of the three water falls seen on the surrounding mountians are fed by sperry glacier which is currently melting, and which I could not even see. In only fifteen years the entire glacier will be gone. How could a natural monument which has been standing for thousands of years be gone in only fifteen years? How could this magnificent amphitheatre be fed by a Glacier I can't even see? Why is so much beauty hidden so far from people? Why am I fortunate enough to see it?

All pictures wwere taken by myself this past summer on the trip with my uncle.
