The "Canner Man"
Our School Mascot
![]() |
The school mascot, we think, was changed
to the Canners around 1952, or 53.
There is no mention of this in the early
yearbooks
but folks from around
that era
have told me that we changed from the “Rams” to the “Canners” about
that time.
I think it was a student council move. I don’t know how
many times there have been
efforts
to change it, but I think not too many.
The last time was around 1997 or 1998.
At that time, student council wanted
to put out a survey to students to see if a change
would
be
considered.
They
met with so much resistance from the student body that
the survey never got
off
the ground – and we have been the Canners
without question since.
I don’t know who designed the “Canner man”
but I am told
that he is patterned after the Perdue “Boiler Maker”.
