the premise of this project is that i took 3 photos out my window every 30 minutes for 24 hours. i used 3 shutterspeeds: 4 seconds, 1/15 second, and 1/1000 second. thus 3 x 49 = 147 pictures. (49 because i started at 7 pm and ended at 7 pm). but i fell asleep twice, so there are actually 47 columns, and 3 rows.
each row is the full 24 hours (47 pictures). each column represents the same time of day at 3 shutterspeeds. the top row is best at night and is pure white during the day (4 second exposure). the bottom row is best during the day, and is pure black at night (1/1000 second exposure). the 1/15 second exposure, in the middle, only shows up exactly at sunrise and sunset, at night it is almost black and during the day it is almost white. you can see in the complete picture that the piece is basically divided half white/ half black, with slightly less daytime.
yes, i hand developed the film and all 141 pictures in the darkroom. i even printed each individual picture that was pure white or black, i didn't just make a whole bunch of black or white prints, which would have been a lot faster. i printed them in batches of 12, after exposing each picture i wrote a tiny number on the back, and when all of them were dry i played a giant game of putting them all in order. later, i tacked each one to the wall. this piece is subtitled "24 hours in a series of repeated human actions".
