Character Analysis Michael Durant- This man was a pilot for the Rangers and Delta Force, otherwise known as the D-boys. He flew a Black Hawk filled with around 25 men. He was a tall man with dark brown hair and eyes. He was not very muscular because it was not necessary for him to be. Mike Durant’s initial goal was to lower the troops onto the ground then he was to circle the target house and provide air support for the troops on the ground. Another goal for him was to make sure that he came out alive but more importantly was for his friends to make it out of this war alive. His goals were demolished when his Black Hawk was hit in the tail rotor by a Rocket Propelled Grenade. His helicopter went down in a small street. The convoy was supposed to move to the crash site but was unable to get there because of all of the small arms fire and RPGs. His crash site is at the verge of being overrun when two Delta Snipers are roped in to the crash site to set up a perimeter until the convoy reaches them. The snipers are killed by a huge Somali mob and eventually the site is overrun. Durant accepted the fact that he might be dying so he placed his gun over his chest and waited. Sergeant Paul Howe-One of the large men in size, he had light brown hair and brown eyes. He had big muscles and was relatively tall. He was one of the D-boys and was positioned on the roof of the target building when he was initially roped in. Paul did not have to many goals while out there in Mogadishu. His main goal like many of the other men in the war was to come out of the war alive. He would accept it if he died on the field but still wanted to live. He also wanted to keep the other men alive as well as himself. He wanted for the war to stay under control but this did not happen. Paul and his D-boy regiment were to get to the crash site and secure a perimeter. One of the men that was in Chalk Three was hit so Howe told some of his men to pick him up and keep moving. As Howe was running his team ended up in front of the entire group because unlike the Rangers who would stop at the intersections and leap frog across the D-boys would run straight through the spot. Howe thought That the key to survival was to keep on moving like your hair was on fire. As he was three blocks ahead of the Rangers an RPG exploded on a wall that was next to his team. He was able to feel the pressure of the grenade and the heat that it was protruding. One of his men was it in the side with a piece of shrapnel so he kicked in a door a to take cover as the wound was attended to. Howe took out his knife and checked the wound which had swollen over the hole that it entered. Captain Steele- This is one of the larger men in the force. He is really strict on his troops in the base and has a short temper against the D-boys because they do not follow a chain of command or obey any order given to them by a superior officer. He was in control of Chalk One when they roped in and was supposed to cover the south-western corner of the block with the target building on it. Captain Steele had the same goals as many of the other men in the war which were to stay alive and to make sure that every man made it out of the terrible city. But one goal that he carried and no other did was to consolidate his Ranger force and establish order. Steele was supposed to lead the force of Rangers and D-boys to the crash site which included Howe’s Delta team. Steele ended up falling behind the rest of his chalk because he had a radio strapped to his back and the idea of stating spread apart meant that they would be a harder target to hit. One major problem that he ran into was the D-boys would run straight through the intersections and would not turn to make sure the Rangers made it through so his leap frog formation was broken. This made it harder for him and his Chalk to get through the intersections. He was at an intersection and had moved only ten feet when a burst of rounds told him and his men to drop. Steele was stuck there for ten minutes under intense fire and tried to call the convoy on the radio to find out where they were. Steele screamed into the radio when his one of his men was down that he needed a medivac but was unable to attain one. Air Force Technical Sergeant Tim Wilkinson- One of the smaller men in the army who was shorter than most of them there. He had brown hair and brown eyes. He was one of the only medics that preferred the thin, plastic helmets that the D-boys used and he was one of the only men to take in a heavy ceramic plate that was placed in the front part of the body armor. He was one of the medics that was sent in when Super Six One went down. He wanted to know everything that there was about the helicopter’s position before he went in because he wanted to be prepared for the task at hand. An RPG hit the helicopter that Wilkinson was in while he was still in it and the pilot held a hover until he was out. When he touched the ground he could hear the cracking of bullets and see them come flying by. He did not carry a bulky gun because for what he was trained to do he would not be doing much fighting. Instead he carried a CAR-15. He saw some of his team cross the intersection and head into a small alleyway so he followed. When he reached the crash site he saw one of the troops that survived the crash pull out the pilot. Wilkinson looked for a way to pull out the copilot but his body was stuck in the helicopter because the metal bent over his legs. |
