One of the main themes that seem to show up in this section is bravery. Most of the troops grew this bravery not only on the base, but also in the field. They obtained this through the Hoo-ah spirit that they had on the base and through the friendship among one another. These men would do almost anything to save a friend. The 10th mountain division and the Pakistani and Malaysian forces were brave because they were going into the fray to save the men that had been trapped in this terrifying city. This was extremely important because the trapped troops would all have died out in the field if the mountain division and other troops did not lend in their support. The Ranger and D-boy medivac teams were brave as well because they were risking their lives and the pilots of the Black Hawks, because they had to rope-in, to save those at the crash sites. These men were running through the streets of Mogadishu while being shot at to get to the crash site because they were brave enough to risk there own lives to save another. This was excruciatingly important because if we did not have men like them to risk their own lives to save another?s then those troops all would have died in the field. The pilots of the Black hawks and little birds were also brave because they were circling the downed helicopter with the risk of being shot out of the sky by an RPG themselves. They would circle the helicopter to ward off crowds that were swarming the streets trying to get there. Either they would shoot their mini-guns or they would fly in low to push the Somalis back with the wind of the helicopter. They also would lower in medics to help with the wounded and casualties. These men were truly brave to keep off large crowds of people and lower in the medics with their own lives. Dale Sizemore was one of the bravest of the troops because he was stuck back at the base because of his broken arm. Then, when the first convoy rolled back into the base he volunteered to go out and into the fray even though he was hurt. The Commander told him that he was not able to go out there with that cast on so he cut it off. They told him still that he could not go but he hopped into the back of one of the convoy vehicles. This was brave of him because he was willing to go into the fight that nobody wanted to even though he was hurt. All of the men who had been in the convoy on the first run out there were brave but the men who went back out despite the conditions were even braver. These men had the whole city shooting at them and they returned to base thinking it was over and went back out had extreme bravery. Bullock was another brave medic in this dreadful city. He not only helped Blackburn get to safety but this time he ran straight into a bullet infested street to pick up Goodale and work on his wound, that had entered his thigh and exited out of his buttock. Bullock was brave to run into the street and get Goodale to a safe place to work on him. The two Delta snipers, Shughart and Gordon, were brave when they decided to go down to Durant?s crash site and set up a perimeter. They set up Durant in a position so that he could protect their backs as they held the perimeter. The snipers stood at the front of the helicopter with the best cover that they could find and they would shoot into the huge Somali crowd that was coming right for them. They both ended up dying but they were brave to set up a perimeter around the crash site even though they knew that the convoy was having many problems and it was not likely that they would survive. These two were some of the bravest of all of these men. Durant was another of these brave men because when he knew that there was no rescue team to save him and that he was the only one against an entire Somali mob he placed his gun over his chest, looked into the sky and waited for them to do as the pleased with his body. This shows great bravery because he did not panic when the crowd came over him wanting to kill him or when they started to strip him for anything that they could benefit from. He did not falter when he was announced to the mob as a Prisoner of War. Overall, the men that went into the war were extremely brave because they risked their lives to try to save the people of Somalia by feeding them. They were brave for going out into the city that was shooting at them all the time. All of the men that went into this war were as brave as they come. |
