Andrew Proftita Period 2 Act 3 Summary
All of the troops that were deployed for the assault in Mogadishu became trapped in its streets and the spot where the first helicopter had gone down was in danger of being overrun. Wilkinson, one of the rescue team officers, was sent in to secure the site and help anyone in need. Jollata, the pilot that was flying the team in, was hovering over the streets to let the team rope in when his helicopter was hit with an RPG. The rescue team had reached the crash site. The size of the Black hawk compared to the streets made it hard to maneuver. Sergeant Fales was shot in the calf only three minutes after he roped in. The bullet went straight through his leg. Sergeant First Class James McMahon, a delta sniper, was pulling the copilot out of the helicopter when the team arrived. Wilkinson climbed into the helicopter to see if the pilot was alive or not and turned up dead. McMahon who was badly bruised from the crash went to a medic to take care of his face. Walcott, the pilot, was stuck in the helicopter. It was hard to get his body out of the helicopter because the frame had bent over his legs. Sergeant first class Al Lamb jumped into a trash hole for cover and was shooting out of it rapidly. Specialists Robert Phipps and James Belman roped in and covered the 12 o?clock position. Sergeant Steven Lycopolus came to help cover this position. They started to throw grenades over the walls to stop the shooting but it did not help. Phipps threw one of his grenades but forgot to pull off the safety strap and the grenade came back at them and exploded. The explosion did not kill anybody but it injured Phipps so much that he could no longer fight. Two Black hawks were circling over Pilot Mike Durant?s crash site waiting desperately for a rescue team. Three Delta snipers, Randy Shughart, Gary Gordon, and Brad Halings roped into this site to hold of the growing Somali mob until the rescue team came. Dale Sizemore, one of the SAW gunners, was stuck in the hanger because he banged up his elbow a few days earlier. He stayed next to the radio to get any information possible. He was going to be on a flight home in a few days. One of the troops lied about having asthma and suffered a serious attack but stayed in the army and was freaking out while listening to the radio. The ground convoy had returned and was reloading and going for another run. Sizemore volunteered to go out into the fight even though he was injured and was rejected. Thomas didn?t want to go back out to the city because he didn?t want to get killed. The convoy had three five-ton trucks and four hummers. Lieutenant Larry Moore was in the lead hummer and was going to lead the convoy to the crash site. Lots of men volunteered to go out to the city. The members of Chalk Two were headed for the second crash site and they would cross an intersection and then turn around and cover the other. Yurek saw a big gun up the main road and used his LAW to blow it up but it went short. The shooting began and so he loaded some 203 rounds into his gun under the barrel and shot them at the gun and hit it. Nelson became blinded and deaf because Twombly fired his gun right in front of his face. The D-boys now had to work with the Rangers, which is something that they never do because they were trained to survive on their own. The Rangers were having a hard time with the D-boys because they would not follow orders. The Rangers would do a leapfrog type of tactic to get across the intersections and wanted for the D-boys to do the same but instead they would just run right through. One of the Rangers was hit in the side with a piece of shrapnel so they busted into a small house. The soldiers that were guarding the second crash site rejoiced when they saw the familiar uniforms and thought that they were getting out of there. Goodale was shot in the leg and fell on Perino. Goodale was rushed off of the street and was out of the fight because he was shot in the butt. Fillmore, one of the Deltas, was shot in the head. Private David Floyd was scared and wanted to crawl into a little ball but another part of him was like an uncontrollable animal. His friend was shot and this enraged him. Specialist John Collet was next to a hump was firing very rapidly in every direction possible. The Delta snipers that were guarding Mike Durant were both killed and Durant was taken captive by an angry mob of Somalis.
