Theme Analysis I think the true theme of this act is hope. At this point in the book these men are tired, and beat up and some of their friends are even dead, most other are wounded. I really think they are sick and tired of being there and after Durant gets taken and thsts what they are waiting for. I think all they can do is hope and pray that they let Durant go, alive. These men would go over the Somali's and announce to Durant that they would never leave him and they are still here for him. I know that, that gave Durant hope for himself and his safety. He was being treated well and was in fine condition but I know deep down in his heart he had no idea if he was going to live or not. He was hoping that they would come and get him and they would do anything to get him back. I knew when Durant had gotten captured that their troops hearts sank. I think some may have lost hope. I would hope that they didn't but I think in the back of some peoples minds they knew Durant would be dead. They really have no idea what is going on in these Somali's heads. The Americans were thinking that the Somali's were going to beat him and some thought they would torture him for information. But in reality all they did was help with his wounds and give him food and drink. They even let him write a letter to the people outside to let them know that he would be alright, and to "not touch his Jack Daniels." These men were in so much pain as it was and I know when the bad things were happening one after another they were hurt even more. I dont know how some of these men would stand everything that was going on. But we are Americans and we never give up! And they didnt, they did everything they needed to do, to get Durant back and they did. It was a huge celebration and a true sign of Hope. That's really what you need to last is, hope. |
