George J. Swingle was a kindly soul who apparently couldn't kill a fly. Consequently, in 1868 he obtained a patent on this humane fly trap. It was baited with honey and the flies ended up in the wire cage. When the cage was filled with a sufficient number of insects, the trap could be taken outside and emptied. Consequently, the undamaged flies could once again roam free.
