Parashuraam

Parashuraam

Parashuraam was the grandson of Rishi Richeek and Satyavatee (daughter of Raajaa Gaadhi), and the son of Maharshi Jamadagni and Renukaa.

Parashuraam is known for his anger, like Durvaasaa. He got angry with Raam when He broke Shiv's bow to marry Seetaa. Raam tried to pacify him, but he was adamant and demanded that He should demonstrate His power by breaking his own bow. When he was about to give his bow to Raam, he was surprised to see that it went to Him itself. Then he promised that he would not live on this land till Raam was there and went to Mahendra Parvat.

Parashuraam Kills His Mother
Once Renukaa, Parashuraam's mother, went to bring some water from a river for her husband's worship. There she saw Gandharv Raaj playing with his wives in the river. She got mesmerized seeing them playful mood and remained standing there for some time. When she came into her senses, she filled the water and returned to her Aashram walking fast. Still she got late. Jamadagni knew everything with the power of his Tap. He got very angry and he ordered his eldest son to cut her neck. But he could not do it. Even his second and third sons did not do it. When Parashuraam's turn came, Jamadagni ordered him to kill all his brothers and mother. He immediately drew his sword and cut the necks of all of them. All died instantly.

Jamadagni got very happy to see tyhe obedience of his son. He asked him to ask for a Var. He asked only this that "All should be alive as before and they should never know that I had killed him." Jamadagni got very happy to hear this. He made them alive again and they all stood up immediately as if they have got up from a long sleep.

Parashuraam and Sahastrabaahu
Once Sahastrabaahu (Kartveerya Arjun of Haihaya Vansh) and his army came there in Jamadagni's Aashram. Jamadagni welcomed them with a great hospitality. Sahastrabaahu got very surprised at this and when he came to know that it was because Jamadagni had a magical cow, he demanded her for himself. Jamadagni said - "This cow fulfills our needs of Yagya etc, that is why it is not possible to give her to you. But Sahastrabaahu tried to take her by force but that cow defeated his whole army. This enraged him more than ever. Once when he got chance he came in the Aashram, killed Jamadgani, took his head and the cow with him. Parashuraam was not in the Aashram at that time. When he came and knew all this he took vow to take revenge of this.

He went to Sahastrabaahu and killed him along with all his sons and his army. The legend goes that he filled five ponds with their blood in Samanpanchak area (present Kurukshetra). He emptied Prithvi from Kshatriya 21 times. Thus even being a Braahman, he was a Kshatriya, and his Naanaa (his paternal grandmother Satyavatee's brother Vishwaamitra) was a Brahmarshi even being a Kshatriya.

Parashuraam and Dronaachaarya
In the last Parashuraam Jee donated this Prithvi t Kashyap Jee and all his belongings to whoever wanted to take them and went to Mahendra Parvat to do Tapasyaa. When he was donating all this, Dronaachaarya heard this and came to him to ask for financial help. Parshuraam said - "I have already donated my all things, remains only my Astra Shastra (weapons); if you want I can give them to you." Drone got very happy to hear this and he asked for them with all the methods to use them. Parashuraam also gave them to him happily and thus Dronaachaarya became invincible to all.

Parashuraam and Bheeshm
Both Bheeshm and Karn were his disciples. When Bheeshm did not marry Ambaa, she went to Parashuraam too to ask his help. Parashuraam said - "He should marry you if he has done this to you. I will ask him to marry you." So he called Bheeshm and asked him to marry her or face him in a fight. As Bheeshm could not marry her, he had to face his Guru until his Guru did not accept his defeat.

Parashuraam and Karn
Karn wanted to learn archery. First his father Adhirath took him to Dronaachaarya, but he refused to teach him saying that he taught only to princes. Then he went to Parashuraam. Parashuraam saw a kind of glory o his face and made him his disciple. He was so happy with Karn that he did not ask for any Guru Dakshinaa from him. L ater, once Parashuraam was sleeping keeping his head in Karn's lap, that a terrible insect started biting in Karn's leg. It caused his leg to bleed but he did not move it. When the wetness touched Parashuraam, he woke up and saw that Karn's leg was bleeding. He asked him, "Why didn't you save yourself from this insect?" He innocently said - "You would have woke up."

Parashuraam understood that Karn was not a Braahman. He got very angry at this that he got education from him by telling a lie. He cursed him - "You will not remember my education when you will need it most." Karn was very sorry at this but could not do anything and went away.

Others
Parashuraam Jee had a hot argument with Lakshman when Raam broke the old bow of Shiv Jee. He got satisfied only when he challenged Raam to fight with him and when he wanted to give Him his own bow to Him to fight, his bow went to Him automatically.

Parashuraam Jee taught weaponry to Karn also. After he finished his education, he wanted to give him Guru Dakshinaa, but he refused to take it saying that since he was such a nice disciple, he would ask it whenever he would want it. But later he took his education back from him and cursed him that he would forget his education when he would it most.
