Martin: Me and Joe hit it off, it was good, it was a good team, you work with someone that it does click and certain things go unsaid. |
Int: Steve’s character has got loads of different layers, he’s very manipulative , he lies, he cheats, he can switch on the tears like that. As an actor do you have to have a foundation for him, do you have to know where he is actually coming from? Martin: Oh yeah, absolutely, the audience might think, oh Steve’s crying because he is lying, you know, he is trying to get away with this one but as long as you play it for real and it’s actually happening at that moment, then the audience believe it. Int: So Sheila plays your mum, doesn’t she? (Martin: yeah!). Had you always admired Sheila because I have, I think she is a fantastic actress, so were you pleased? Martin: Yeah, I was thrilled, when they told us she was coming in to do it, I was thrilled. |
Martin: Melanie is the reason why Steve is in Albert Square, she has been his driving force since day one. |
Martin: You know this last week has been the hardest week since I started. |
(Into Martin’s Dressing Room) Int: It’s very pokey in here isn’t it? Martin: Yeah, actors dressing rooms aren’t very good places anyway I always think, they are all full of anxiety and they are full of stress, you know. Before you go on to do a scene, even if you are the most confident actor, you are going over your lines going ‘ I knew it last night, but I can’t remember it now.’ They are always full of stress.. Int: Well, it’s your last day today, are you feeling a bit emotional? Martin: Not really emotional. I would say kind of anxious. You know it gives you a certain amount of anxiety, I think, because you know, I’m comfortable in doing this I know that I’m dealing with a successful role. Int: Don’t you think it would have been nice though if Mel and Steve could have just gone off into the sunset together? Martin: But that is the beauty of soap, you know. You give an audience as much as you can, all the time they think they are gonna get what they want, and right at the end, you whip the rug away from under their feet, so they don’t get it. That’s what makes you watch the next episode. Int: Well, the actual way that you exit this show is really very dramatic and the build up to it is a lot of hard work..... Martin: Yeah, I’ve heard of getting the sack, but being blown up that’s... Int: You get finished off big time in this , don’t you really? Martin: Yeah. You know at the end of the day I’m an actor, it’s not down to me how I go, it’s up to them and they made the decision to kill me off. I’m quite happy to be killed off because it means the next time people see me in a different role. They know that Steve Owen is dead and he’s been left behind and he can’t come back, so you have to accept Martin Kemp as something else. |
Martin: I’m gonna miss it! |
