betchadupa - The 3D EP (Flying Nun/Festival) Nick Gormack 4/5 This EP from young Auckland group betchadupa builds on the promise of last year's self titled debut. The seven songs are a mix of stroppy, snappy punk-poppish tunes (which bring to mind the likes of Green Day - even complete with American-tinged vocals) and more melodic and reflective songs. I guess it depends what you want, but for me the latter stuff is more inventive, and more rewarding, although Man on My Left, with its strange psychedelic wind-out at the end, and the upbeat Awake are enjoyable. But for me they sound better when they slow the tempo a bit in songs such as Drive away, West Coast Religion, and the absolute gem, the final track Brighter Sound. There's no denying genealogy, and with this last track young Liam Finn has written one of those sad, wistful, beautiful little songs that could've graced any of dad Neil's recent albums. |
