Bogie's Activities

Bogie was a 4-H dog with Andrew from 1989 to 1992. We all learned a lot together. It was a very worthwhile experience that helped us to understand and appreciate dogs better. We learned "dog language," since you cannot teach dogs "people language." There are lots of lasting memories of these years.

Bogie earned his Canine Good Citizen certificate (CGC) on Aug. 5, 1990.

Bogie and Andrew both learned self-control and perseverance. Sometimes being in the 4-H show ring at the Evergreen State Fair was distracting, uncomfortable, and not exactly what you wanted to do at 9:00 in the morning. It paid off, since they both grew into well-mannered gentlemen. (Note: Andrew & Bogie qualified for the Puyallup Fair state championships in Fitting & Showing and Novice Obedience all three years!)
Even "mom" got into the ring on adult day. Here I am with Bogie's first attempt at a retrieve over a jump. He did it perfectly, to my total amazement. I really thought he would drop the distasteful dumbbell, or not sit like he should. It's not the same as practicing in your backyard. Look at my face; my heart was in my throat!
The Proud Moment!

"Did I do good, Mom?"

We "retired" from 4-H after this show in 1992.

Bogie has always loved camping and hiking with the family. We came upon this huge log that had fallen across the trail, and Bogie leaped onto it in a single bound. Nothing was going to stop him from exploring the next corner, but when we were ready to leave the cool shade, he willingly came down the trail with us.

On this camping trip to the mountains, Bogie could not resist the water (of course). Diablo Lake is an icy glacier lake, but he kept going back for more stick retrieving. He came up gasping from the cold water each time. We finally had to leash him and take him back to camp. His belly was getting pretty red. Even so, I have never seen Bogie shiver from cold.

Even at the age of 12, Bogie can be prompted to play a game of tug. He knows better than to take or chew slippers, but I wanted to get this playful shot, so I teased him into grabbing my slippers. Of course, he still retrieves things, too, sometimes bringing you his toys to get scraps or attention.

Bogie's Favorite Pastimes

* Gazing at you when you eat *
* Chasing and attacking the sprinkler *
* Keeping squirrels and possums off the back fence *
* Catching the Frisbee, snowballs, tennis balls, food scraps *
* Going for walks and car rides (even the vet), no matter how short *
* Politely greeting trick-or-treaters (and everyone else) at the door *
* Relaxing, resting, lounging, sleeping! *

"It sure is nice to shed this summer coat!"    "Hmmm...how WILL I get down these stairs?"

This was Bogie at 14 before he had a 10-pound spleen tumor removed in mid-Dec. 2001.
After a sudden collapse with labored breathing, trouble getting around, and keeping food down or even wanting to eat, the tumor was discovered by x-ray.
We just thought he had a fat, old-man gut!

Here's Bogie resting a few days after coming home from the hospital where he spent 6 days after his surgery. Bogie went down from 77 to 67 pounds. His average weight in adulthood has been around 80 pounds. He's a little thin, but eating good food and gaining strength. Even though his arthritis slows him down, he's happy to be hanging out with his family again, and we are blessed to have him around! :)

We brought Bogie upstairs on Christmas morning so he could be with us as he has been for the past 14 years. He rolled onto his tummy to watch us opening presents and seemed to be interested, as usual, about the activities around him.

Bogie has always loved snow, so when we had 7 inches in January 2002, he wanted to lay down in it one morning instead of coming back into the house after his "chores." His red fleece coat keeps him warmer at night, since he can't climb the stairs and has to sleep on the lower level where it's cooler.

SAD NEWS - July 16, 2002

Bogie passed away peacefully in his sleep at home early this morning, just 2 months short of his 15th birthday.  He tired of the complications of age and his declining spinal condition, but gave it a valiant effort until the very end.  We will miss him terribly and will never forget him or his devotion and special personality.
