This was a great trip where we spent 10 days exploring
in Black Hills/Badlands area of South Dakota. We also had a day
to visit Devils Tower in Wyoming which was outstanding. My best
friend, Jeff, and my brother, Justin, were along for this memorable
journey through the backwoods of SD. We were able to achieve this
trip since my family had planned a reunion out there during July;
we thought it a perfect opportunity to backpack some trails.
Here's some photos from our hike on French Creek Trail. Click
to view.
We spent the first day of our arrival hiking around
the badlands (where the first image below was taken) and the following
day we went to Devils Tower for a nice dayhike around the Tower.
The next 3 images (including the prairie dogs) below are from
that. After that, we spent the nice couple of days doing the reunion
thing, then we headed for the French Creek Trail. That trail really
tested our abilities in map reading and total determination. That
trail forced us to cross the creek over 40 times with the water
rising over our waist at some points.
Here are some pics from our hike up to Harney Peak from the
north side. Click to see.
Once that was completed we backpacked up to Harney
Peak (highest point in SD). That's where the remaining images
below are from. We actually saw several Big Horned Sheep on the
ride over. Anyway, we had some incredible vistas from Harney Peak
including from our campsite about mile north of the peak. That
was a fun hike to top and back down. The images below were captured
from Jeff's camcorder and transferred over. Once I get more photos
scanned, I will put them up.
