Things I've learned in Junior morality cass
This semester, I have learned a great deal about morality. First of all, one must decide on what moral principles one believes in before one is put in a situation to test them. There by studying morality partially accomplishes this. The next major thing that I learned is that despite social and cultural differences, moral principles seem to hold true. This means that in almost every culture, murder is unacceptable.
A third thing is that there are primarilly three things that determine the morality of an action. The first of these three is the action itself. Some actions are inherently wrong and should be avoided. The second is the intent. A good action that is done for the wrong reasons hurts the goodness of the act itself. The third part is the circumstances. These include state of mind, obligations, and others.
Morality extends into the realms of business, war, and science/medicine. In business, one must consider others and not just oneself. One's priority should be the lives of their customers and employees. In war, one must have a justified reason and seek to help others, not benefit oneself. Such a cause is preserving life or justice. In war there are rules of conduct and means that are acceptable. In science and medicine, the object is to help others and protect life.
Altogether, I have learned that while complex in the issues, morality seems to be basic when looked at by itself. This course has forced me to look at what I believe and rethink that which I have taken for granted for far too long. I now consider what I want my responses should be when I confront a problem. Finally, I am now understanding the difficulties of morality but still seek to do what I feel is right.
