In his paper, Kevin points out the facts of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He clearly lists the reasons given for the bombings along with the facts accompaining them. First he states the reasons Truman had for the bombings. He talks about how Truman felt obligated to continue Roosevelts projects. Also the American public was stringently anti-Japanese at the time and wanted unconditional surrender. Truman had to try to appease them while trying to find a peace. Also he needed to win the war before the Soviet Union entered and set harsh demands. The bombings, he states, were unneccessary. The Japanese were close to surrendering from lack of resources. The Japanese merely wanted conditions in the surrender so as not to be robbed of all their dignity and their emperor. One of the major reasons he concludes the bombs were dropped is to make an impact on the world that we were solidly in the superpower class of nations. The thrird thing he talks about is the unneccessary suffering that the bombs caused. Besides the failure at peace that brought about the bombings, he tells how the bombing of Nagasaki was unneeded. The bombing schedule was pushed up and the second bomb was dropped before the news of the first reached the emporor. Also, both targets had little military value and were primarily civilian. |
