Summer Learning Loss: From Harris Cooper's study on "The Effects of Summer Vacation on Achievement Test Scores: A Narrative and Meta-Analytic Review" (Review of Educational Research, Fall 1996)
"Low socioeconomic status translates directly into fewer learning opportunities and/or less support for learning-related activities during the summer vacations" (p. 262)
Basically, summer learning loss occurs mostly in students coming from lower income families, not the typical families attending Catholic area schools in our community. Check out Summer Matters.

The 6-8 week time period spent reviewing the previous years school work, cited in the presentation by Darla Deville, has been disputed by several area school teachers. It does not come from a study done locally, made up of the student population demographics attending our parochial schools.
How much learning will take place in hot stuffy classrooms in June and August? With Daylight savings time children will be up later than normal and sleep deprived during the day.

The concept of intersessions is contradicting. Children who are struggling will not get a break if they are attending remediation classes. Our schools should assist these children as soon as the problem starts. Teachers will not get a break if they have to plan intersession classes.
Intersession Teachers: Who is teaching our children?
COST: A major factor which is down played. Who is going to pay the additional building maintenance and utilities? The intersession teachers? Cost of screening teachers? $$$$$$$$$$
