I cannot gurantee that you will hit the ball
250 yrds straight away or even that will ever hit it that far, however,
I can list and explain what all the big hitters have in common.
You should therefore be able to copy these moves and also help you
hit the ball a bit further of the tee.
Shoulder turn
One of the most important factors in a swing
that produces those unbeliveable 'rips', some people get confused
by the point of a backswing. It is a fluent movement that allows
you to be in a position that will give you the oppurtunity to meet
the ball with a square face and from the correct swing path. Some
players feel that the faster they swing back the faster they will
come down. This simply does not work in a golf swing, this will
produce a hurried 'lunge' which will produce only unconsistent and
poor shots. The backswing should be slow and contolled and finish
when the shoulders have turned 90 degrees(i.e the line of the shoulders
points over the ball). Many players overswing and feel the backswing
is only complete when the clubhead is parallel with the ground.
you only have to look at tigers' swing to see that he rarely gets
the clubhead parallel to the ground.
produce powerful shots but with no effort
'Power is created through leverage not through
throwing the clubhead at the ball', this statement suggest that
you dont have to swing fast to hit a powerful shot. How often have
you hit a shot that you thought you couldnt even produce, and your
partner remarks 'wow, you didnt even seem to put much effort into
that!', the reason you looked like you didnt put much effort in
was because you didnt! so brimming with confidence you step up to
the next tee, hoping to replicate the shot but add that extra bit
of effort resulting in a hook staight out of bounds, as tension
increases through the game you tense up and come in with a n/r.
right click
here and 'save target as' to see a short mpeg of the rythm you
should try and replicate!! You would find it hard to believe that
this man hits on avergae over 250's wouldnt you! well its true!
The secret to powerful hitting shoulder turn and slow
controlled tempo.
Drills to help tempo
When warming up first take one club and make
around 10 fluent practice swings, from address to throughswing and
then stopping and starting again. After 10 or so add another club
and do the same, and then finnally doing the same with 3 clubs,
making sure to make each swing slow and controlled. When you have
done this your driver alone should feel very light, and you will
no have to put any effort in to make the club wiz past you.
The second drill is one which you have to
take a trip down to the practice area. With around a 9 iron, you
should take shots with your feet almost touching each other. You
must not take full swings, just half swings, you will notice that
if you put too much effort in or swing to fast you will not stay
balanced and you will tip to once side in the follow through. now
practice this and watch your handicap come down.
