Dear Friends of Free Exchange,
After a 3-month hiatus, Free Exchange will reconvene in the newly renovated and remodeled rec room in Opera Plaza. I haven't seen the room yet, but I assume it must be gorgeous because the rent has been doubled! For those of you inclined to participate in the potluck, the kitchen will now have hot water, refrigerator-freezer, oven, microwave, and dishwasher! Incidentally, I will be moving to Berkeley the weekend of July 14th, and would appreciate more food and drink contributions than usual on the 21st.
Toward a civil (as opposed to political) society,
- Jeanie

presents
J. NEIL SCHULMAN
on
"Was My Grandfather A Child Molester?"
* * *
Prometheus-Award winning novelist, screenwriter, and journalist J. Neil Schulman dives into the controversies surrounding how modern America differentiates between children and adults. Should 14-year-olds convicted of a crime be given the same penalty as a 30-year-old? Should a 13-year-old tried as an adult and acquitted be emancipated? Should President Bush's 19-year-old daughters be able to buy a Marguerita without getting busted? And was J. Neil Schulman's grandfather a child molester when, at age 27, he impregnated the 13-year-old girl who became matriarch of the Schulman clan and Neil's grandmother? Schulman tackles these and related controversies, arguing that our current society's legal and social attitudes regarding the transition from childhood to adulthood ignores all previous human history, that the practice of reducing biological adults to the status of children has been the primary strategy in the perpetuation of the Nanny State, and that the single exception of trying children as adults is the rankest hypocrisy and injustice.
Bring your non-libertarian friends to this meeting, especially if they belong to any organization with "Mothers" in its name. Neil wants to tell them exactly what sort of mothers they ae! ~~~
Here's an appropriate quote:
"The United States is a nation of laws, badly written and randomly enforced." -Frank Zappa
BIO SKETCH:
J. NEIL SCHULMAN dropped out of public school in 10th grade, screwed around in a private school for about a year and a half without turning in any work, was tutored for a semester, then challenged the exams and graduated six months before his public-school class graduated. He went to college for two semesters, then decided that he was right when he dropped out the first time, and dropped out again. In the thirty years since he dropped out, he has totaled less than a year as an employee of any company. In other words, he's a drop-out who made the most out of not having any future.
Neil is the author of two Prometheus award-winning novels (Alongside Night and The Rainbow Cadenza), short fiction, nonfiction, and screenwritings, including the CBS Twilight Zone episode "Profile in Silver." He has been recognized as a pioneer in electronic publishing by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He's author of Stopping Power: Why 70 Million Americans Own Guns, considered the definitive attack on gun control; wrote the controversial nonfiction book, The Frame of the Century?, showing how O.J. Simpson could have been framed by the actual murderer; and has been a popular guest on radio talk shows and TV news programs. Currently he's developing a plan to build the Julius Schulman Center for the Lively Arts, named for his late father, in Pahrump, Nevada, and is at work on a new novel and a new screenplay. His personal website, with links to his books, recent writings, interviews, and new projects is at http://jneil.tv/
