Ernie,

Your objection to me being an officer in both organizations is entirely reasonable. I thought I made it very clear that I have my own fears about it. The real questions for me at this point are which organization to resign from, and if it's ALP would it be better to resign or get kicked out. :-)

What set me off was your presumtion that my goals in seeking or holding office in ALP, Inc. are vote totals, immediate respect, etc.; that it indicates I have a self-image problem; that my chains will rest lightly upon me; that I don't really understand freedom, etc. etc. This isn't some grade-B sci-fi or drama flick. I'm not Luke Skywalker and you're not Yoda or Obi-Wan or whatever. I'm certainly not a member of some mindless collective.

Our government does some pretty aweful things, like bombing asparine factories because our president couldn't keep his zipper up and needed to distract the public. Yet you remain here. You could leave; you could go live in some other country that doesn't bomb innocent people, yet you don't. As long as you don't participate in or sanction such initiations of force, it would be unfair of me to blame you for it just because you make the choice to live in America or (gasp!) run for federal office. Perhaps you're staying here in hopes that you might be able to prevent such actions from happening in the future. Or maybe you're just too lazy to move. _I_ wouldn't presume to know nor would I presume to dismiss your decision out of hand as some implicit endorsement of the bombings.

What I choose to do is and will continue to be based on where I think I can accomplish the most. If that turns out to be ALP, Inc. for a while, it doesn't mean I prefer that leadership's policies to ALP's any more than your decision to live in America means you prefer our government's foreign policy to that of the Bahamas or Costa Rica.

At some point it becomes time to pack up the family and get the hell out of Dodge. I suspect when that time comes, I'll know it. I'm just not there yet. Peter won round 1, which I had thought would be my clear signal that it's time to part company with ALP, Inc. once and for all. The messages of support I'm getting tell me that it's not a lost cause. Yet.
