Haemoglobin, whose structure
is given above, is a molecule that is involved in the process of oxygen
transport as it behaves as a respiratory pigment. It contains a coloured
non-protein portion known as heam that is linked to a protein molecule.
Haemoglobin is red colour due to the oxygen carrying pigment. Haemoglobin is
able to combine reversibly with oxygen to form oxy-haemoglobin in areas of
higher O2 concentration, and releases oxygen in areas of lower oxygen
concentration.
Haemoglobin has a quaternary structure where it contains four separate
polypeptide chains of two types, two alpha chains( containing 141 amino acids
each) and two beta chains (containing 146 amino acids each). This
molecular structure is saved in the *.pdb format.
